Sidon was one of the most important Phoenician cities, and it may have been the oldest. From there and other ports, a great Mediterranean commercial empire was founded. Homer praised the skill of its craftsmen in producing glass, purple dyes, and its women's skill at the art of embroidery. It was also from here that a colonising party went to found the city of Tyre. Tyre also grew into a great city, and in subsequent years there was competition between the two, each claiming to be the metropolis ('Mother City') of Phoenicia. Glass manufacturing, Sidon's most important enterprise in the Phoenician era, was conducted on a vast scale, and the production of purple dye was almost as important. The small shell of the Murex trunculus was broken in order to extract the pigment that was so rare it became the mark of royalty.

Old historical place.. On a very nice view.. You can take lots of good pictures.. The wind passes in the walls creates a cool atmosphere although the weather was very hot, The entry is very affordable 5000 Lira per person It’s clean.. needs some attention and maintenance but it was nice overall specially if you read (google) a bit about the place while you are inside you will enjoy more, And read the guidance there also.

(Translated by Google) Sidon Castle, Lebanon It is called Qasr al-Bahr, with an area of 3859.5 square meters, and it has been standing for decades at the western edge of the southern city of Sidon. When you approach the city center, where the Zaatari Mosque is, and turn to the right, you reach the sea castle, which is considered today one of the most important monuments in Sidon. This castle was built on a rock jutting out into the sea, a "small island" 80 meters from the beach, and was built between the years 1227 and 1228 AD, and used in its construction ready-made carved stones and stumps of columns placed crosswise inside the walls. The castle consisted of two towers joined by a solid wall, a large part of which was destroyed: the first tower was located to the northeast of the castle, opposite its main entrance, and its walls were built of huge stones. As for the second, it is located on the southwestern side, and it represents two historical stages, because the lower part of it was built in the Crusader period from old movable stones, while the upper part was rebuilt during the Mamluk period, which is confirmed by the text inscribed on a marble panel that is still in place above the tower window Overlooking the inner foyer of the castle.

Old sea castle built by the Crusaders in the 13th Century to defend the holy land, the place is neglected and in a bad shape. There’s no security and no regard of cleanliness. Inside the various places there’s litter and smell of urine. Outside by the walls and in the sea there’s ample litter floating, stray dogs feeding on garbage and no fence or barrier. It’s a shame to leave this historic place in such a state.

Very small castle with lots of history. It’s a plus that it’s by the water so it’s really calming as well. Would help if there was a guide to tell you about the history of the castle but you can Google it! Lol. A visit will last around 15 minutes. Don’t forget to take pictures or even come with a fishing rod to grab dinner!

A beautiful sea castle build by the Crusaders in the 13th century. A beautiful architecture they used some roman blocks from the city to build it. The purpose of building this castle is to protect the city and the port from attacks, it was only a military force. Visiting this location is a must while touring the city.

It's a shame that on google you can't give a general opinion on a city. I have been to Saïda twice and it is one of the most attractive, historical and cultural cities in Lebanon. Many people who talk about Lebanon talk about Beirut for me Beirut isn't Lebanon. So the castle is good to visit but with the city it's better.

A beautiful historical castle located on the seashore of the Said. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Saida. Must note though that it's very sad to see how people have thrown so much litter around the area.

Peaceful, beautiful, totally affordable (50 cents per ticket). The castle stands at the seashore, so breathtaking and fullfilling to pass amidst its ruins. Boats provide 20min trips in the sea around the ruins for 1$ per person. Traditional souk and little crafts shops surround the place.

Sidon or Sidon, the third city-state of the Phoenicians, which in Semitic language means “fishing place”, was founded, according to the Bible, by the grandson of Noah (the one with the ark). This city, located 45 km from Beirut, is mentioned several times in the Bible, as it was Jesus' favorite when he wanted to rest.

The city is dirty and filled with trash. I don’t know why Arabs can’t clean up after themselves and are ok sleeping in their own trash. Other than the garbage the castle was a nice site.

A must visit when in Sidon. Views are very beautiful overlooking the Mediterranean and the city. Built on a small island just 80 meters off the coast. I just LOVE this place and again, it’s a must visit if you are in Sidon. Costs LL 4000 which is around 15 US cents as per today’s currency rate.

(Translated by Google) It is a place to visit quickly. But be careful! It's a pile of stones without any safeguards. You have to be very careful there. I like to show it to friends who haven't been to Lebanon yet. From here you can look out over the city of Sidon. It's actually almost sad that this is not being restored. But maybe for that very reason it has a certain charm. People with disabilities cannot go there. They can, but they don't get very far. Man muss dort sehr aufpassen.
