Very powerful history, and a very old and enormous tree! It's pretty amazing to see it in person.

The site is historical, when slaves that were freed after fighting the American Independence war landed in Freetown, they gathered under the biggest tree they could find and gave thanks to God for their freedom. It has been standing since 1787, its arguably the oldest tree in the world. People still pray under the tree till date.

Iconic and you can usually orientate yourself around it if you're in the town centre of Freetown. It has a lot of history and is embedded into the story of Freetown (I recommend reading the 'founding Freetown' series on Medium if you want to know more). It really is something you need to see in Freetown! It's also so much bigger than you think it's going to be when you see it in person. Amazing that's it has survived this long.

This tree is the oldest cotton tree in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It is the national symbol. It is located near the law Court building and the National Museum. It also stands where four roads meet, Siaka Steven St., Walpole St., Pademba Rd., and state avenue drive. The tree has a lot of unique history. The highest currency carries the symbol of this cotton tree. Under this tree was first settled 400 formerly enslaved Black Britons, who arrived off the coast of Sierra Leone on 15 May 1787, accompanied by some English tradesmen. The freed slaves first prayed upon landing on the soil of Liberty and freedom, in other words to start their new lives as free people. The first church was built few metres away from it. Freetown city started around the cotton tree and later spread around.

This is the top touristic attraction in the center of Freetown! To be honest, it's an impressive and huge tree in the middle of a roundabout close to the governmental quarter but nothing else than a tree! Unfortunately they put a lot of big advertising posters around the tree! Nice to see but 2min are enough to shot some photos and continue your way!

(Translated by Google) Located in the center of Freetown in the middle of traffic chaos .. In the vicinity many government buildings. Worth a visit if you want to visit and see other things. Is the landmark of Freetown. Age of the tree can not be said exactly. Exist certainly since 1792. The probability that he is still older, but is very large. (Original) Liegt im Zentrum von Freetown mitten im Verkehrschaos.. In näherer Umgebung viele Regierungsgebäude.

I read the news that the cotton tree, the national symbol, was destroyed in a storm. It's very sad. I look at the posted pictures and am overwhelmed by their greatness.

Some say it is only 500 years old and was there before the Freetown was. It is awesome such a magical tree placed in the town. If you see you will understand. The bats on some of the branches, the leaves. I was surprised to see such a humongous tree inside a metropolitan area. Can't explain how it survived the fire and hope it is true that it will recover, it is massively huge, I think I said that several times but can't find a way to frame it other wise. Worth to have a look. Looks of things going on around it. Close to National Museum and the Big Makit. The local people are amazing so don't worry to talk to them, no worries to be kind and nice.

this is a very historical place in downtown Freetown. The tree is a good meeting place as everyone can find it. It is near the State House, and government functions. You will find posters of upcoming events posted on the wall circling around the tree.

The Cotton Tree is a symbol of Freetown which is the capital of Freetown. It reminds Sierra Leoneans about the slavery and post slavery era.

I visited the Cotton Tree in 2019 and the when reading about the history behind the tree you can get a real sense of the journey the country has been on. Was saddened to hear it was damaged by a storm.

A rich place in history. Tho, I do feel that it could be utilized better, i.e having guides and a place to stand, I think its a pity that this historic sign is being used as a round about, it's outrageous, this place should be a tourist hotspot and now it's just a round about, I would recommend that the area around the tree should be used properly.

The cotton tree is listed as one of the core tourist attractions and is said to be a historic symbol of Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. I think there should be more attention on keeping this area clean and free from heavy pee and foul odor.
