Old Hen Kitchen

Cafe

👍👍 One of the cafe pioneers around. Had the salmon soba and chicken with rice and broth (forgot the name). Both tasted very comforting with local flavours. Very nice and simple. As usual, bottled mocha was good. People often mention good, coffee, rosti, cafe, matcha, cold, great, nice, brew, milk,

Old Hen Kitchen: Cafe features an Open-kitchen concept of which guests can observe the preparation of the dishes - Visibly Slow. Was informed 25 mins after the first order was placed that it would take another 20 mins to prepare due to lack of pasta. This could have been informed to us right from the start when ordering. Taste-wise: Fish and chips were seasoned well, and there's no complaints for the fries either. 45-mins pesto pasta was okie. 4 stars :) Reco: If you are in the area and okie to wait, the food is 👌; whilst service is definitely lacking and can be improved. Cheers~

A new brunch favorite in Singapore. Not lots of unique places here … a lot of same same, but not Old Hen. Great coffee and awesome food, I loved my rosti, and my friend loved his avo toast. Great service and nice vibe too! Highly recommend!

Good food and extensive menu. Do try their salmon rosti. Rosti was crispy and slightly burnt which I like. Fish & chips were ok and feels like it is slightly over fried. Coffee was not strong enough for me. Tried both their hot white & oat cold brew. Perhaps should consider using a stronger blend.

It’s hard to resist the golden-brown rosti aka potato pancakes. Exclusive to the Owen Road cafe, these mouth-watering dishes are available daily from 9:30am. Freshly shredded and handmade in small batches, there’s five rosti options available. For the purist, there’s the plain version ($12) accompanied with sour cream but the highlight will be their 48-hour home-cured salmon and 120-hour cured bacon.

No crowds during weekday lunch hour. Many seats are available in this cafe. The table is big and some seats have charging points here. Food and drink is good too! Shakshuka is full of tomatoes and packed with garlic. Salmon soba is coated in sweet sauce teriyaki sauce that has a hint of citrus flavour to it. Chicken chazuke dashi comes in a glass sake bottle that is very hot. Do let the bottle cool a bit before pouring it into the rice. Dashi has a light umami flavour and it goes really well with the rice. Great to chill with chill music. Overall enjoyed the food and ambience of the place. Will be back to try out other dishes!

Dropped by for an iced white coffee! Loved the atmosphere with high ceilings, and open spaces. Iced white (4/5) Our coffee was very balanced, mildly acidic and very smooth. There is really something about the milk that's amazing. Matcha cold brew (5/5) Their signature matcha milk is amazing! Complex flavour profile that's refreshing, bright, slightly vegetal with sweet notes. They're definitely using high quality matcha! Plus points for being well blended with no powdery bits. White coffee cold brew(4/5) We preferred the richer matcha cold brew over the white coffee. Loved the smell of the roasted beans, and it was really smooth too. No acidic flavours!

This is the new outlet ... space is much bigger than the original ... coffee still as good ... and of course have to take away their dark chocolate

Came on Friday lunch time. Overall experience was great. Both cold bottled cocoa and latte were great, not too sweet. Food was above average. However, Salmon and Soba was a bit blend. Service was okay

This is a great place for coffee date or studying! Their cold brew white coffee tasted balance; it wasn't too sweet and the milk flavour didn't overpower the coffee. Truffle fries were well seasoned and it is a good portion for 2-4 people. Salmon was cooked close to perfection; it has great colour, soft texture and a cripsy seasoned skin on the bottom. However, i feel that this dish (salmon and soba) was lacking in citrus flavour. Staffs were friendly and polite! This cafe has great lighting for studying. Food is pricey but reasonable for the good quality ingredients they use. Recommend giving it a try!

Came on a rainy Saturday afternoon for lunch and found the place relatively empty, lucky us. The place was warm and welcoming with great songs to chill to. This place has an industrial feel to it. Was seated next to the window and I enjoyed it, especially with the rain outside. However, the doors are really close to the seat, meaning that you have to give up some privacy and peace whilst enjoying the view. My partner and I order the breakfast set, fish and chips and a hot choc. The hot choc came in a small cup but was really rich. The fish and chips was great - chips came crispy. The batter was light and airy. The fish - sweet and fresh! The relish tar tar was refreshing but a tad too salty. Salsa was refreshing too. The breakfast set wasn’t impressive. The eggs were good, but that’s about it. Everything else was just relatively okay. The sausage had a great flavour but was a little too dry and salty. The toast was pretty thin tbh. Nothing really stood out for this dish. You help yourself to water, located on racks. And you do the same for condiments like ketchup and chilli sauce. Service was okay - except that I was charged an extra dollar for tar tar sauce when I placed my order. I am okay paying for it, but I was not told that I had to pay. That’s not very nice. Huge plus point - the toilets were actually clean!!! That said, overall experience was good and pleasant. Would like to return to try some other times that are raved, such as the soba and pesto.

Went in for lunch on a Sunday. Have been here earlier for coffee and they do have some decent options there. For lunch I ordered a spaghetti and my friend ordered a Roesti from a special menu. The spaghetti was tasty but not filling enough. The huge mountain of greens on top does little to complement the main dish in anyway. The roesti was good but my friend found the coffee very bitter . Doubt id go here for food again as prices arnt offering much value either.

Chicken Chazuke contain chicken breast, japanese rice, crispy brocoli, furikake and a bottle of hot dashi soup. Pour the dashi soup in and enjoy a delicious savoury hot meal. Really love the rice and crispy brocoli, the savoury taste is just nice. Hot matcha latte, thick bitter matcha with creamy milky milk. Take away their signature cold bottle drinks of matcha latte, dark cocoa and chai soy latte, the cafe is located at a quiet lane. Back to try the avocardo toast, full of avocados, sprinkles some nuts, chili flakes and a few drop of lemon juice to bring out the taste. The egg is well cooked, place it on top of the toast, cut it into half to let the egg yolk flow on the toast.

Breakfast plate is overpriced considering its use of low quality ingredients. The chorizo was unbelievably dry and overcooked while the slice of sourdough bread was so stale and hard. The only nice thing on the plate was the eggs. We also had Mac and cheese which was bland and had tomatoes in them, an in-cohesive dish thru and thru. The bacon and kimchi burger tasted ok flavour wise but the patty was really dry and unappealing. Added $3.2 for the fries which was not fresh and tasted like it was drowned in rancid oil. Matcha milk was diluted and tasted cheap for that price point. Hot matcha latte is much better in comparison but matcha powder was not well blended, leaving chunks of powder in your mouth as you sip. The dark cocoa milk tasted just like Meiji milk. We had high hopes before visiting but it was surely one of the most disappointing cafe food experience ever

Loved the no-fuss dining experience from QR code online ordering to the quick service and tasty food. Food is not oily despite having certain fried products. Was impressed by the consistency of the softboiled eggs and the pairing with the bread.

Chances upon this place on Instagram when the rosti were plastered all over. Had the beef curried sasuage with sauce and rosti - beef curried sasuage was decent with a good crust - rosti was very well done, will be back for the rosti again - personally, would prefer just the rosti with the sour cream which is already a 10/10 Truffle fries and shkashuka were quite average unfortunately - truffle fries had a slight truffle taste and were decently fried - shkashuka was unfortunately abit underwhelming but the accompanying bread was pretty amazing Coffee here as always is damn bloody good. This old hen really produce some good cold.brew!

The coffee here is SO GOOD. I’m not even much of a coffee drinker but I crave their coffee. It’s very smooth and not bitter, complex flavors, deep and rich notes. The food here is also excellent. The restaurant also has an awesome vibe, the decor and ambience feels like a mix of a hip Tokyo coffee shop meets NYC neighborhood eatery. Really chill and quaint yet modern

Food is generally sedap, although some hits and misses as well...the furikaki fries were a tad too salty, and the teacake slightly hard...but the mains were good and the green tea varieties good as well. Still worth a visit to try the food.

Nestled within the cosy Old Hen Kitchen was Poonsti, our brunch choice for the weekend. Heard lots of good things about their rosti, so this was what we zeroed in on when we made our orders. I went with the Sour Cream & Chives Rosti ($12) so I could taste the OG rosti quality. Boy, was this good. Decently thick with crisp edges, the potato shreds were seasoned well and still with a firm bite - none of that mushy business. I almost wolfed everything down before I realised there was still the sour cream. Spreading a dollop atop the rosti, the tangy creaminess lent a fresh taste to the potatoes and the enjoyment factor went up even more. This quickly became my favourite rosti in Singapore, no kidding. My partner, on the other hand, tried the Bacon & Egg Rosti ($18). This time round, the rosti came slathered with Tomato Jam, almost like a sweetened bolognaise sauce, which threw her off a little. While I didn't mind it, she quickly asked to switch with my leftover plain rosti so I guess it's not to everyone's tastes. The house-cured bacon though, was delicious. Two whole slabs of thick, crisp, sweet-savoury bacon. I don't know what they glazed them with but I wish I could have more. Overall, their rostis deserve all the hype and more, though do try their plain ones first! Can be a little pricey but I think it's worth a visit or two.

Went on a Saturday morning when it just opened. Not many customers early in the morning. Ordered their DIY breakfast with scrambled egg, avocado, beef sausage, and rocket salad, and also with ice latte. The breakfast platter was not bad. However, the coffee was a bit lacking.

brunch heaven, love their aglio olio and rostis! every dish came in together nicely, their matcha also not bad, got that umami taste 👍 we came in weekend afternoon, the vibes were great, can see an open kitchen, plus the artworks were cool

A bit pricey but Cold brew was nice. Used Chope $27 for $30 voucher here. Each cake loaf was $4.50. liked the lemon one best.

Fantastic food (forgot to take a picture of the fish and chips that were really good as well). Nice ambience and staff as well! A place I always want to come back often to!

Consistently good food and service, for both dining in and takeaways. The cafe is walking distance from me so I come here multiple times a week. So far I haven’t had a single bad experience; hot drinks are always made on the spot and whenever small mishaps happen, OHC always makes up for them. I’ll continue to support the cafe and definitely hope to see it survive and thrive post-pandemic.

Brunch heaven 🍞💗 Avo toast was loaded with Avo 😚 Shakshuka was also super flavourful. Maybe because it’s in Little India area, but it felt like there was some Indian spices incorporated. Elevated the dish so much more. Tater tots were also good too and remained crispy despite having turned cold after awhile. And not greasy AT ALL!! The matcha was also very thick and smooth. Will return!! Went on a weekday morning and was not too crowded.

Can't go wrong with Old hen coffee. This sister outlet is bigger than the original, great space for working or casual meal. Good menu options.

Nice place with good food. Love their rosti crispy in the outside. Taste blends well. The price is reasonable too. Located in 10 mins walk from Farrer Park mrt. Will go back again.

Was around the area and decided to pop by as the rating of the place is good. Ordered an aglio olio (not ur usual taste), pork belly rice (ok only) and a stacked pancake (not good at all). Assuming they are catering for a healthier menu by sprinkling plenty of nuts and muesli, just not my cup of tea.

Still one of the best cafes out there. My favorites here are the salmon soba, chicken chazuke, cold brew coffee & matcha milk.

This is one of my go-to places to meet up with friends, introduce them to my favorite cafe, for my own self-reflection or work, or just a celebratory treat to myself. Always a lovely place for top-notch pour-over, lovely service, beautiful decor and absolutely inspirational music. It’s my regular hangout place to feel good.

Caught with an old friend here. The place was pretty busy when we go there. Seated swiftly with ordering instructions provided. The pork belly rice bowl was very good. Not over the top oily or salty. It was seasoned well abs well balanced. The aglio was also well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The place seems like a well oiled machine from service to food.

We went on a Sunday morning. Manage to get a seat without reservations. Service was okay. Food is normal. The toasted bread was a little hard to bite. If they could price down the price by a little I think would be worth value to hang out. There’s a max 1 hour dining restriction impose right now.

Went there for lunch on a Monday afternoon. The cafe was not crowded, nice place to chill and relax. The coffee was strong with a sour aftertaste. Ordered the avocado on toast and it was not too bad. The basil pistachio pesto spaghetti tasted home made.

Really nice cafe in the day and looks like a pizza joint at night. Either way, there’s beer on tap along with the large range of cafe food items and high quality coffee. Self order at counter followed by table service. While portions are not huge, food is quality and prices are fair for what is on offer.

  • 4/5 Sherman T. 2 years ago on Google
Foods taste are good, portion are reasonable with a slightly higher pricing. Service are OK too. All are above average and will be back to try other dishes.
