Very interesting museum about the earthquake in 1963. It’s worth visiting to understand why Skopje looks the way it looks today. Free entrance. On Google it says “temporarily closed” but it is opened.

Free entrance. If you enter it looks a bit closed or under construction but it is open! It is quite small with a bit bigger exhibition about the big earthquake and the causes in the 1960s. The building is the old train station of Skopje.

Former train station, ruined by the earthquake of 1963. Definitely needs restoration and preservation.

(Translated by Google) The museum is located near the ruins of the former train station, which was destroyed in 1963, together with eighty percent of the city, resulting in a large 6.1-degree earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people and left 120,000 homeless. The museum was founded in 1949. The museum's permanent exhibitions depict the city's history from 3000 BC. When we visited, most of the Museum was dedicated to the earthquake, which was very moving (Original) Museoa antzinako tren geltokiaren hondakinen ondoan dago, 1963an suntsitua, hiriaren ehuneko laurogeiarekin batera, 6.1 graduko lurrikara handi baten eraginez, 1.000 pertsona baino gehiago hil zituena eta 120.000 etxerik gabe utzi zituena. 1949an sortu zen museoa. Under development now, so it is partially open and for free. It is still very good and gives you an idea of what the earthquake was like and how devastating it was. We enjoyed the museum quite a bit.

Free entry with 2 floors. The ground floor shows the history of the severe earthquake in 1963, which destroyed most of Skopje. The building used to be a station, designed with a symmetrical building. But the left side got totally ruined, and they left it that way to remind people how bad it was.

At the moment (oct 2023) I think they are under some kind of renovation so I didn’t get to see much but the Neolithic part of exhibition. The entry fee was free because of that. It was a quite dark and no instruction at all. Hopefully it will get better after the work is done.

In the center of the city, inside historic monument, the old railway station. There are exhibitions quite often and the entrance is usually free. It's not too big, so it's a nice visit for a one day or weekend stay in the city. Should promote more online

The guide at this museum was extremely interesting. He has an extensive knowledge of the history of Skopje, North Macedonia and Europe. This small and free museum is certainly worth a visit. Make sure you spend time speaking with the guide. He is fluent in English which was great for us.

Closed as it indicates on Maps. The clock stopped during the earthquake in 1963, but I went there around the same time, so automatically thought the clock had the right time and it was still early.

The city of Skopje suffered from a terrible earthquake in 1963 that is still in the minds of many people who live there. To keep that memory alive and to avoid going through a similar experience, the Museum of the City of Skopje honors the 1070 residents who died in that event. Being the old train station at the time of the earthquake, the building of the museum is connected to the same past. There are other exhibitions and happenings that take place in the same building, making it worth the detour.

A small museum in the city center, worth visiting. Entrance fee around 100 MKD. Many photos and detailed info, also in English. Main focus on the earth quake 1963, but I would like have been more info regarding other things too. Therefore, one missing star.

  • 1/5 Jonatan F. 4 years ago on Google
From other reviews I must conclude some exhibitions were closed or has been removed, since there was nothing about skopje on display when we visited. Not sure though as there was no info or anyone there who were interested in informing us. As it was when we were there, it was probably the least rewarding place to visit for anyone interested in this city. One star earned for being free and small!

The 1963 earthquake makes Skopje unique place. This tiny museum in half destroyed railway station must be visited. Strangely there are ancient relics aparat from the story of earthquake and city reconstruction. Museum is for free and in 30 minutes one can grasp what Skopje experienced.

Built in 1938. It was the most beautiful train station on the Balkans, until the earthquake in 1963. Left ruined, but preserved. Today museum of the city of Skopje.

Really interesting museum located in the old railway station half destroyed in the 1963 earthquake, the clock is still at 0517 which is when the earthquake struck. Loads of interesting artefacts and information, and an insight in to life in old Skopje. I would recommend locals and tourists visit it. Entrance was free when I went.

Closed. A staff member indicated there were no exhibits to see but there was a language barrier. A recent review shows photos of an exhibit so I can only think they are old photos. Arrived at 4pm on a Tuesday. Very disappointing.

Museum is about the 1963 Earthquake which destroyed the city almost entirely. The building itself is remarkable, such a shame it will be surrounded by some newly constructed mall/apartment building. So bad this could happen with heritage sites. There is also a guide in the museum, Mihaly who will guide you through the history as a true master of his trade. Great guy, great stories. A new café/souvenir/book shop would be nice to be open in the future.

Free to enter... lots of information and pictures from 1963 when the massive earthquake happened. If you know the history, this will be worth to see, cause this earthquake literally changed the city forever.

  • 1/5 Daniel R. 9 months ago on Google
This “museum” is a joke. The guy at the Entrance told me it is closed, because there is no exhibition. Then after I insisted and asked if they are ruins to visit, he bothered to show me the small underground all where there are some artifacts, which I visited in about 5 minutes. Other than that, there’s nothing else to see, the hall where there are pictures and explanations about the earthquake, and the history of it was fenced and not accessible for visits. The most interesting part is actually the outside of the ruins of the railway station

  • 5/5 Gábor K. 8 months ago on Google
It's free entry. Has a very good exhibition about the big Skopje earthquake from 1963. Bring 100 denar in cash if you want to buy a little album about it.

Cannot recommend this enough, Mihàly’s knowledge is unbelievable and super nice guy who filled in lots of our knowledge gaps about not just Skopje and Macedonia, but this history of the whole of the Balkans! Incredibly insightful and articulate guy who is a credit to the museum- give this guy a pay rise! Also explained the building’s history in detail. Really cool museum that gives lots of historical context in not just the exhibitions but in the building itself.

It was a well organised exhibition on zemjetrosenie in 1963 Skopje. The other exhibitions were interesting, but the effects of tragic event and the international assistance and solidarity of Macedonian and then citizen of Yugoslavia was displayed.
