We learned so much about this man who championed many causes and was a progressive beacon in the 1800s. Markers placed throughout the property indicate the site of original structures while those still existing provide insight into the life and times of Gerrit Smith and his legacy.

This was a very pleasant stop as part of a days road trip. Peterboro is one of those sleepy little farming villages that have been turned into bedroom communities and thus have limited attraction for the visitor. However this hamlet has three great sights to see. The Gerritt Smith Estate, the National Abolition Hall of Fame, and the General Store. See the reviews for the Hall of Fame and the General Store. Parking is next to the unassuming white house just north of the village square. There is a $5.00 per person suggested donation. The park staff was very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable about all things Smith family and abolition. The park has signage and docents to help you understand the site and what took place there. There are a few buildings left from the time period, however sadly the large estate house is gone. Good for adults. My wife and I spent about an hour or so looking around. My only disappointment was the lack of a picnic table in the park or in the village square for a picnic lunch. However, don't bring a lunch! Instead go to the Peterboro General Store and Deli.

Beautiful area, nice & friendly people. Being an American civil war reenactor and spending several days a year here it is wonderful.
