This Museum is so amazing especially for people who love gems and minerals. You can find some amazing things to look at and lots of goodies for grandma or grandpa to get for their gkids. Great little park is opposite of Museum. Very nice employees. Very clean inside and around the building. Restrooms were clean.

If rocks and minerals are your thing, get ready to spend a long time in this place. It was truly an amazing collection curated by NM regions and continents. I could have spent all day in here. It is located on the campus of the NM Institute of Mining and Tech. It was a little hard to find; make sure you put the museum into your map and not just the university. They have a large array of minerals to sell if you are looking to add to your collection. If you want a T-shirt, go to the Fidel center on campus, walk in the front door, and it's on the right. They have a surprisingly large selection of apparel. I highly recommend this place if you are a rockhound.

Outstanding museum. Staff incredibly helpful. Artifacts and tools mixed with the rock and mineral samples were a great idea. This museum should be a must-stop for anyone in the area. The gift shop is an great source for maps and books. They also carry very reasonably priced jewelry from local artists.

This place is a hidden gem inside Socorro! Pros: - Very impressive collection of rocks, minerals, and gems. - Some of the gems are for sale. - Very good lighting and organization. - They have a small darkroom to show off the "glowing" rocks. Cons: - The darkroom can use a upgrade but they are raising money to do just that.

Definitely worth the drive to this town that otherwise you would have no reason to go to or realize it was there as you flew by on the interstate. Not too far off the highway is this museum located inside the campus of New Mexico tech university. I have never seen a collection of so many minerals, jim's, crystals and all of my life. Truly an extensive collection. For very reasonable prices as low as $5 you can purchase some different rocks and minerals nearby the doors you enter the main part of the museum. You might miss it if you don't look for it it would be on the right. Adjacent and across the hall is a great little gift shop lots of things related to geology. The shop manager definitely took some time as each item there there seems to be unique and thought out.

What a wonderful place ! Free admission though it would be worth paying for. Excellent, very well displayed, labeled, organized, beautiful collection of rocks, fossils, minerals and gemstones. Hands down the best geology museum I've ever seen ! Thank you so much for providing the public with such an amazing place to visit ! Don't forget to check out the dark room to see the rocks glow ! Was super surprised that we were allowed to take photos too ! Many places will not let you. So very much appreciated the kindness of the staff and the amazing place they have provided.

  • 5/5 Kelli K. 4 years ago on Google
The museum is somewhat small but the specimens are beautiful. It is more geology than you will see in a general museum. The gift shop is fairly good, too. There is also a restroom.

  • 5/5 Yunchen T. 4 years ago on Google
Top quality museum with wide selection of purchasable specimens

Outstanding gem and mineral museum. Geological bookstore and gift shop is excellent as well. Knowledgeable and friendly staff make this a must stop when passing through Socorro or visiting New Mexico Tech.

This is really a sitting area, not so much a park,BUT there are historical landmarks and plaques that are important to our culture.

  • 4/5 David V. 6 years ago on Google
A small area of sidewalks, trees, grass, gravel, benches, and information plaques. No picnic tables, no water fountains, no restrooms. Seems to be a gathering place for locals who wish to pass some time together.

  • 1/5 Joanne L. 7 years ago on Google
Sorry but the park is ok but!! There's always drunks there or laying around on the grass , to close to the road for smaller children, or even ppl hanging around that seem up to noo good..big negative feedback on this place

Great place for all ages, most exhibits of minerals anywhere around (the glow in the dark is the best exhibit). Also has a little gift shop with friendly students working the counter.

Small place, but has amazing rocks, minerals and historical artifacts. Well curated, attractive displays.

  • 5/5 Matt B. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful collection in a really well curated museum. And for free! I loved the amount of local (both New Mexico and general southwestern US/northwestern México) gems and minerals on display. Though the museum is small, the collection rivals those of larger natural history museums in quality. The shop was small but really nice and has some awesome maps for sale, if you're into that kind of thing. Also the museum has gem and mineral specimens for sale in cases, one of which has only local specimens, super cool! I had to resist the urge to buy some but I'm more inspired now to go find these things myself.

I love rocks, minerals, and geology. This small museum has free entrance and free parking. I went during the week and there was only one other couple there. I did have questions and there was no staff within the museum itself when I was there. This museum is on the school campus grounds.

Small but a tremendous collection, information and they have some rocks and minerals the kids can touch! We were on our way to santa fe and the kids saw the exit, so we added this stop and we were not dissapointed! You can also buy rocks and minerals.

I visited this museum last year while on vacation in New Mexico. I really loved it! All the mineral displays were amazing. I geek out over geology so this was a very enjoyable visit for me. They also have a store and some minerals for sale as well. I bought myself a couple of small minerals to display at home.

My husband had a meeting with the Electric Company there. I found the Museum (I love artifacts and Geology) as I was searching for any places nearby to see dinosaur tracks, fossils, or rock shops. IT WAS AMAZING!! It's definitely the highlight of our trip!! I hope we have to go back for more meetings, so he can drop me off next time so I can spend more time at the museum.

Superior museum. There are lots of educational displays. Of course, there are lots of New Mexico minerals, and they also have lots of worldwide specimens as well. They are always adding to old displays and creating new ones. It is a must-see in Socorro. I really loved the meteorites on display.

If you like rocks and minerals...this place is awesome. Enjoyed every minute there. Displays are so well put together, every piece is labeled with name of gemstone💎, fossil or mineral and place of origin. Aptly called a mineral treasure trove....A must see!! 😀 Plus there's no admission price. Donations are accepted.

  • 5/5 Joseph M. 4 years ago on Google
Oh man, if you love pretty, unusual and beautiful rocks and crystals, then come here. Outside of maybe the Gems exhibit in the Museum of Natural History in New York, the best display of crystals you can get, and this is FREE! I would say probably the best (maybe only?) Thing worth doing in Socorro.

  • 5/5 PaintFlicker 4 years ago on Google
Loved it! I'm surprised no one followed me around with a cloth to wipe my drool from the display cases! Really, the specimins are beautiful and well displayed. It's a great place to use for an educational tool for public classrooms, homeschoolers, secondary education, as well as professional or for private seekers of knowledge

  • 5/5 Thelma F. 4 years ago on Google
It was well worth the stop! The gift shop has a nice selection of books too.

  • 5/5 Kari C. 4 years ago on Google
Clean, friendly, and fun. One of the largest collection of rocks I have seen. There is so much you can learn from just going for a small visit. The book Shop just across the lobby is a cute little visit in itself. Ranging items from stuff to do with kids to having books that will teach you more about your area. Don't forget to ask about the search game they have for the mineral museum.

Absolutely stunning display of minerals and beautifully displayed. Very clean facility and helpful staff as well.

  • 5/5 Jeff P. 4 years ago on Google
This was my first chance to see the museum in many years. Compared to being buried in the old Workman building it was stunning. There are new mineral samples, but more importantly everything is easier to access and view. NMT has always had world class minerals on display in my opinion, and now it is easier to view them. They also have a nice selection for purchase from 'pretty rocks' for $0.50 on upwards through a few hundred dollars depending on what you want to spend.

Wow, I'm not a rock type of guy but who knew there was so many ways to classify them? It's very nice collection of rocks and you can even buy yours. Of you are around and have some time to spend, it's a no brainer and free to go in and look around.
