Genuinely
one
of
the
best
travel
experiences
I
ever
had.
I
booked
a
day
trip
to
the
Boyana
Church
and
Rila
Monastery,
both
highly
popular
tourist
stops.
Not
surprisingly,
on
their
own
merit,
the
didn't
disappoint.
The
rich,
unique
history
and
profound
beauty
of
each
place
already
earns
them
top
marks.
Boyana
impressed
me
because
I
knew
so
little
about
it,
but
Rila
impressed
me
because
it
exceeded
all
expectations.
Typing
on
a
smartphone
makes
it
a
challenge
to
go
on
at
too
great
lengths
(and
besides,
I'm
sure
the
goal
here
is
to
make
you
want
to
go),
but
I'll
limit
my
comments
about
the
destinations
to
a
handful
of
points.
Boyana
is
remarkable
for
its
unique
art,
its
unique
architecture
and
the
fact
that
Tsar
Ferdinand's
second
wife,
Eleanor
(a
remarkable
woman)
is
buried
there.
Nothing
I
saw
prepared
me
for
how
remarkable
Rila
Monastery
is.
The
art
inside
and
out
of
the
church
is
amazing,
and
there's
so
much
more.
Don't
skip
the
museum
with
the
insanely
detailed
carved
cross.
But
as
said
at
the
outset,
these
sights
are
tops
on
tourist
lists
for
a
good
reason.
I
not
only
want
to
recommend
these
sights
but
to
recommend
Traventuria.
My
guide
was
named
Lubo,
and
I'll
quote
what
she
said
about
Lubo:
"You're
better
than
Wikipedia!"
Lubo
filled
the
journey
with
volumes
worth
of
information,
and
he
did
so
effortlessly.
He
wasn't
just
reciting
a
script
(or
if
he
was,
then
give
this
man
an
Oscar).
It
was
apparent
that
he
was/is
passionate
about
his
country
and
its
history.
He
didn't
confine
his
discussion
to
just
the
travel
destinations;
he
expounded
about
all
things
Bulgarian.
It
was
a
delightful
day
out
with
a
knowledgeable
friend,
whom
I
had
just
met.
I
can't
recommend
this
tour
enough.
If
you
come
to
Sofia
for
a
few
days,
do
seek
out
the
services
of
Traventuria.
