Must visit temple. No active poojas being done as the idols are ruined by invaders in 1200 century. We hired a guide, charged 400, explained very well. 500 people constructed this temple for 58 years. Every carving detail is mesmerizing. Well maintained, neat and clean. Such temples give positive vibes when we visit. Scan QR code at the temple itself and buy tickets online. I am attaching the instructions pic for the same here.

This was my first temple visit in South. I blew away by the beauty this temple gives. The Architecture is so beautiful it context all Ramayana & Mahabharata very well and every block & pillar offer something new to witnessed. Felt so happy to learn about this temple through our guide. How much beauty and learning is there from our mythology.

A classic example of the famous Hoysala architecture and one of the three temples of the kind to be nominated in the Unesco World Heritage list. Unfortunately, this temple is no longer used as a place of worship because the idols have been broken and desecrated by the invading Muslim armies. However, the beauty of the temple still charms thousands of visitors who visit the site to witness the magnificent artistic and engineering achievements of the era, to seek the Lord's blessing and admire the delicate carvings and sculptures, whose beauty is unequal and as unique as the God that it houses.

This is the epitome of Hoysala art and architecture. In aspects of still having the gopura, this is a step ahead of the temples at Belur and Halebidu. It is best to hire a guide to better understand the temple. It would take multiple visits to comprehend the temple architecture in its entirety. There are more than 3000 small and large carvings on the temple walls. The inscription says it took 58 years to build the temple from soapstone mined from the earth. The Vishnu avataras, the stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata and the puranas come alive on the walls of the temple. The three gopuras are an indication of the three principle deities Keshava, Janardhana and Venugopala. The intricate carvings on the gopuras and decorative art are out of the world. The lifestyle of the people of the era has been captured by the sculptors in complex carvings. The smooth pillars inside the main complex made using country lathe of that era is a sight to behold. The intricate carvings on the roof is another wonder to be explored. A must visit for any travel enthusiast.

It is a marvel of Hindu culture and exceptional Hoysala architecture. No Pooja is performed at this temple because the idols are defaced or damaged. It is exceptionally well maintained, moreover so, because it is a world heritage site now. Please visit the temple in early hours for a peaceful tour (guides are also available for Rs 400). Moreover, you can bring your DSLR/mirrorless camera with you for photography. On a final note, please don't litter or etch anything on the stone. It is a great exemplar of our heritage and everyone should play a part in preserving it. P.S. You can buy tickets on site using a QR code and paying Rs. 20 per person.

Beautiful temple architecture. It's sad that such a beautiful temple is not getting what if deserved in terms of Pooja etc... sometimes history is not digestible. The way workers are maintaining the place is excellent. They have kept feeding room for babies which is commendable. A must visit place if you are the person who is interested in Architecture & Sculpters

The temple architecture is beautiful just as any other southern India temple. The recent ticket process doesn’t make sense. You will be asked to make payment online by entering name and ID proof details. Then the security guard writes the ticket details in the register offline. This process obviously takes time. If you’re automating ticketing process then do it fully.

Details as per visit in November 2022. The architecture is master piece. The concerned authorities will have to maintain this heritage site neatly and arrange for ticket counter. This place could be promoted well looking at the architectural work. Wash room facility to be maintained well.

Must visit place.. also called as Keshav temple is an ancient old Vishnu temple between paddy fields.. most of the shrine were damage(noses, hand and eyes) by Muslim invaders in 13th century, so no pooja (no worship) is performed here. hire a guide to understand the architecture and history behind each miniature(though I doubt if guide can cover all the story even in 2 months)

One of the best UNESCO heritage temple. It’s mesmerising and the architecture is so well built. It’s just mind blowing looking at the work. The ticketing system is online and it’s online generated at the entrance. There is no hotel or good restaurants available nearby so better go prepared accordingly. There is no wait time or crowded during weekdays.

Must watch historical sight. This place is beautifully maintained by the archeological survey of India. The ticket of entering the temple should be taken through online mode. They have a QR code scanner which directs you to the link of payment. Rs 20 per member. This temple was built during the Hoysala architecture. The stone carvings and the architecture gives you a goosebump moment. The detailing in each and every single stone is mesmerising to watch. The pillars are greatly designed. Not sure about the proper history. If anyone clearly wants to know the detailed history, they should hire a guide to know the full clear details. As we didn't have time we didn't opt for guide,so it was like watching non regional language movie without subtitles. This temple needs more than a hour to watch peacefully. Excellent architecture and detailing in the stones are terrific. Must watch place with kids to know the historical values. Has a car parking.

Such an excellent Hoyasala Architecture. It is sad that the temple and main idols were destroyed by the invaders. We took a guide service here for 350 rs. It was facinating to hear that it took 58yrs to construct the temple by 500 shilpis. All the stone carvings, small to big sculptures are awesome. Please remember we have to buy the tickets online and there was a QR code placed at the entrance for that purpose. Its simple, if we have a smart phone.

Most Beautiful Temple in India! Small, but each and every part of the the Temple is decorated with statues and carvings. Made in Stone, the aesthetic knowledge of ancient Karnataka people (The great Hoysals) is visible here. I think help of a guide is necessary to understand the details.

This is one of the best places to admire the examples Hoyasala Architecture. This is a Trikuta temple complex housing three Garbha Grihas for Keshava, Venugopala and Janardhana. Plz hire a guide to appreciate the beauty of the carvings otherwise it is easy to miss most of them. The outer walls have Elephants, army contingent, scrolls and stories depicted from Ramayan, Mahabharat and Bhagwat Puran. The best ones I found were of Matsyavatar, Kurmavatar, Varahavatar and Brahma. The interiors of temples has beautifully lathe carved pillars and idols of Venugopala and Janardhana. The original idol of Keshava is missing. The ceiling is studded with carvings of Banana and Lotus flower buds and other design patterns. At the entrance there is a board to scan QR code to by entry ticket via online method. Students until grade 10 can go in free. Overall a must visit temple.

The entry ticket is through online only by scanning QR CODE (digital payment). They will assist you to buy the ticket online. There are guides from Karnataka tourism department available to explain about the monument. The toilet facilities are badly maintained.

  • 5/5 Srinivas S. 1 year ago on Google
Wonderful place to visit and around 30 kms from the heart of Mysore. Well maintained and looks like they are doing some more restoration and cleaning work. The main temple is built on a star-shaped platform and the entire temple is surrounded by a corridor. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna in 3 forms. However, no poojas happen here and no priest is also present as the idols are destroyed. The architecture though is stunning and the intricate carvings are worth spending time admiring and taking good photos. Parking is quite easy. The tickets to enter the temple have to be booked online before you enter. The security guard will point you to a board that lists the website to visit and do the payment and you have to give the ticket numbers to another person and then enter. Given the varied types of visitors here, many struggle with the ticket booking process. So, expect some confusion :-) Time of visit matters. It can get hot during the day making it difficult to walk barefoot on the stones ( you have to leave footwear outside the main entrance to the temple ) so be prepared to hop around and jump into shaded regions. All said, great place and a must visit shrine.

Beautiful temple (no active pooja), with online ticketing system (at the entry gate). Great place for photos, and be mesmerized by the architectural masterpiece. Though away from Mysore city, is worth the drive and visit.

Excellent work by ASI, very well maintained after the terrible destruction of India's heritage by invaders. Chennakeshava temple or the Keshava temple is a Vishnu temple in Somnathpura today in ruins but has excellent history

The architecture of the temple was so unique and beautiful. They don’t do any pooja in the temple. You can just go pray and admire the beauty of the architecture. You need to get tickets in the entrance which you need to buy online by scanning the link they show. The ticket rate is 50rs.

A very beautiful temple and completely offbeat. You can club with Maysore trip as it’s hardly 30KM from Maysore. You can’t offer worship but you can do the prayer. As usual Hoysala architecture will Mantramoongdh , you can spend 2-3 hrs here. There no good restaurants nearby this location therefore plan your self accordingly. Keep necessary food items if you are travelling with kids. You need to pay 30/- as parking charges for car parking. Entry fee is only 20/- each person that you can scan the barcode and pay. There are multiple room for idols and most of them are missing. Bit surprised us. There is 2 authorised person for guide who can explain you about the temple. This temple was consecrated in 1258 CE by Somanatha Dandanayaka, a general of the Hoysala King Narasimha III. The ornate temple is a model illustration of the Hoysala architecture. The temple is enclosed in a courtyard with a pillared corridor of small shrines (damaged). The main temple in the center is on a high star-shaped platform with three symmetrical sanctums (garbha-griha), set in a square matrix oriented along the east–west and north–south axes

Awesome temple. A must visit temple if you go near Mysore or Talkaad. Timings: 8:30 am - 5:30 pm. It takes around 1:00 hour to completely see the temple. Ensure to take a tour guide. He will give lot of valuable information. You need to book the tickets online at the temple entrance. For adult it is ₹20/person. Children's below 15 years are free. Try to visit the temple early morning by 11:00 am or after 4:00 pm to avoid the hot stones. You need to pay a parking charge of Rs. 40. The temple was built by Hosalya during 1200 AD. Great marvel of stone carving and architecture. There is no pooja performed in this temple. It is maintained by Archaeological survey of India.

An awesome place to witness the rich heritage of indian culture. This place showcases the talent of indian architects during the period of Hoysalas. This temple was dedicated to Lord Chennakeshava an avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to the localites this temple was attacked by muslim sultans during the construction, as a result in some places the carvings are not completed and many carvings and idols have been damaged. The idol of the main God Keshava has been missing ever since.
