Pathetic and rude employees. I have been going there along with my 11 YO for years, my daughter learnt swimming there and loves (LOVED) YMCA.. unless this happened. Today, while about to getting in the pool, we were stopped by a lifeguard. She was rude and informed about changes to their policies, that won't allow anyone under 13 for laps! While on the other lanes, smaller kids were going through lessons.. is this not discrimination??? SO only if you are paying for lessons, you can, but if someone knows swimming and accompanied by parents cannot take laps?? When I spoke to the front desk, they just defended stating that I was notified via text, which I NEVER received and there was no manager ("Director") on premise to speak to.. Pretty much the attitude was "take it or leave it" .. we left, with a heavy heart, we decided to cancel my age old relationship with YMCA. It is unfortunate how they have changed and became, very unfriendly and discriminating..

I’ve had a few friends work at the Somerville YMCA over the last few years and the way they talked about it encouraged me to work there over the summer, and the let me tell you the hype is real. The atmosphere there is so encouraging and inviting that I felt at home the second I walked in the door and I got a membership there the second summer ended just so i could be there more often. The after-school staff really knows the kids that come in and are so warm and welcoming to new kids, I recommend every family should enroll their kids in the after-school program just so they can interact with the staff they have. And ever since they got their new gym equipment and facilities, it feels like the whole place got a total facelift and is even better than it already was. A-plus YMCA!

The Somerville YMCA has changed my whole entire life. I have read through some of the comments, BOY are people tough to please! This place has opened so many doors for all types of ethnicities. I read that the guards are "racist" how? Lol, if only you knew. This place has given my child the GREATEST gift, swimming. Those people really CARE, they go above and beyond. They always have food for the children during school breaks, they are an ear to listen on a hectic day, & they have a "Young Achievers Program" for middle/High School children. Not only that, they're hosting an LGBTQ Pride cook-out in June. They're doing things for Juneteenth, they're celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in September... They celebrate the Asian cultures. They give for Christmas This place is so AMAZING! It's like they, the complainers, expect it to operate on LA Fitness or Planet Fitness time. If you don't want a structured community family environment, then maybe this place isn't for you. Yes renovations are sometimes needed, isn't this why our streets are ALL being gutted out for the pipe replacement mission? Or your vehicle if you have one? Let us not forget about our homes etc. I love Jesus with EVERYTHING in me, but it's like those with the negative reviews expect the Somerville YMCA to turn water into wine. HOW? They're not him! If it were up to me, i'm going to ALWAYS suggest ALL of the community join the Somerville YMCA!!!

Discrimination in swimming pool! my son was doing honest lap swim and he was stopped by elderly lady.Same lady allowed other white girl to swim and not my son. I have also shown this to lifeguard and staff. Clear case of discrimination !

I joined this gym because of the steam room and sauna but mostly for the steam room. Unfortunately, that steam room is always out of service. Very frustrating. Women locker room doesn’t have a scale. This place needs to step up their game. Very disappointed.

Kids are learning in a way best for them with great guidance.

Agree with the racism in this place. It was also very clear that it is uncomfortable for little kids. They are not kid friendly and have uptight people working in a community environment setting. I personally had to explain to my kids that they are not being rude just trying to work. Good luck but would not recommend. Much better experience in the other ymca further away. Not coming back to this one for sure.

AWFUL FACILITIES. I had a Y membership for years, and thought I could expect a similar experience here - boy was I wrong. No availability for adult lap swim (except for before 7am and after 7pm) no ability to reserve lanes, pool was probably 90 degrees f from all the little kid pee. Shocked this place hasn’t been condemned by the health department.

The facilities are good except your experience may be ruined by a middle age racist lifeguard here who takes it out on children. I'm rather surprised being that there's such a diverse community here.

The worst management I never seen. I reported to the pool director regards to the lifeguard who yelled at my 4 years old child. Without of finding out exactly what happened, he already decided what happened in his head and proceeded to tell me his opinion.

I love our local Y! My husband and I workout together, and it’s nice to see all walks of life, and ages, in the gym doing their best.

As a woman with rheumatoid arthritis, the Somerville Y's warm pool is literally my lifeline. I have been going to this Y for 7 years and find the staff friendly and helpful. They were GREAT during the pandemic; they really accommodated swimmers safely, w. easy scheduling of lanes. I have also noticed in the years I have attended this Y how well they connect to the community w. food drives, teen nights, daycare — they are a vital part of a healthy town.

We love to go at the Y, my daughter who is 5 started swimming lessons in May and now she can swim on her own. The only thing I should point out is the fact that she has been changing teachers very often, I wish she had a permanent teacher who gets to know her as well the rest of the group. Besides that this, it was the best choice I have made. I tried other schools and I stayed with the Y.

Gym is simple, small, can do almost everything. Only issue I had was a worker being very disrespectful & unprofessional to a group of teenagers lifting weights few minutes before closing

Great place!!! Proposing for the the YMCA in Somerville to have more aquatic classes , but have them be in the evenings so EVEN those who work or go to a day hab program during the day can participate also.
