Babs Siperstein PROUD Center

Medical clinic

😠 The director has been pushing trans men to lower their HRT levels, an ignorant and ultimately harmful move to get trans men to stop taking enough testosterone to get them up to cis levels. Absolutely shameful move from a clinic that claims to be lgbt friendly. People often mention care, appointment, trans, PROUD,

I had my first in-person visit today and it was nothing short of superb. As a fat, disabled, trans woman, I'm not accustomed to being treated with inherent worth and dignity at medical appointments. Not only did I feel warmly welcomed and treated like a real human being with needs and feelings, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate my size and disability. I've needed an experience like this. I felt seen, heard, affirmed, and well cared for. Thank you! UPDATE: While my initial experience was really positive, I came to find the center is difficult to contact and they didn't seem to have very good follow through. I was hoping to switch to them for primary care but I need consistency and reliability. I'm not confident I can get that here.

Director, Dr. Abdelaal, has a record of blatant transphobia against transmasculine patients, pressuring them to lower their dose or even stop testosterone altogether because “they’re born female and shouldn’t have male levels.” This is an “LGB” center, not safe for trans people at all.

Even with all the issues I had with Dr. Abdelaal, having to barter with him about raising my T to cis levels, the consistency and quality of care at the PROUD Center has tanked since he left. (I also wasn't notified that he'd left, which was fun) I used to be able to get a virtual appointment within 2-3 weeks of scheduling. But today, after scheduling an appointment two months out for September 15th, they called me just three days before my appointment to cancel because the only provider they have now "won't be in the office that day". The next virtual appointment they could offer me was NOVEMBER 28TH. I don't even want to know how far out I'd need to schedule for an in-person visit. I've also been begging them for a week to just renew my prescription because I'm out of T, but they seem to keep forgetting that I've asked. If you need a provider who's prompt and responsive to your needs, the PROUD Center is no longer the place to go. It's very disappointing after loving the care I'd received from them for almost two years. The message I'm getting is that they don't have the means to do their jobs well, or maybe that they don't care to respect our time and needs. They're just relying on the fact that we'll keep begging them for hormones and care regardless of how we're treated. I'll be finding another provider as soon as I possibly can.

I’ve been coming to PROUD since 2019, and they are more family than some of my blood. Everyone who I have dealt with has been caring, competent professionals. They’ve gotten me through some of the darkest and most difficult times in my life. They use every resource they can to assist and I really feel like they want to see me succeed and thrive. I’m skittish about Drs. & new people in general, but they’ve always worked with that. I now look forward to appointments here

Currently impossible to reach out to anyone about refilling prescriptions. Requests on MyChart go unanswered a week later, office hours are inconsistent, often closing well before the stated 5pm close time. Generally unwilling to bridge prescriptions until you're just about to run out, and available appointments are months out from when you finally manage to reach someone about that. It's a shame because while the refill situation isn't exactly new, it has never really been this bad before, and the center as a whole used to be more responsive. Now it feels like I need to switch providers just to make sure that I can continue to receive timely care and continue to get access to HRT reliably. Clearly they need more staff and transparency around their actual business hours.

From the moment I walked through the door to receive HRT, I was treated with respect. The staff respected my chosen name and pronouns, provided top notch care and were sensitive to my specific needs as a trans person. I've never interacted with a friendlier front desk nor healthcare providers. Absolutely stellar place to receive care.

I have been a patient at the Babs Siperstein PROUD Center at RWJUH Somerset (PROUD Family Health) for approximately five years. Recently, my wife (who is not a patient) badly hurt her rib; thought is was broken, and needed an X-ray ASAP. We contacted a few urgent care centers, and were getting the runaround from them. Then, I decided to call PROUD for suggestions/advice, and two staff members, Ashley and Aminah, were so compassionate and helpful that I just had to extend my gratitude (and my wife’s gratitude as well). They suggested a nearby urgent care center (that Google had NOT found/suggested) that was perfect for our needs! So, whoever needs to know how great these two people were, and continue to be, needs to be told!!

I was a big fan of the service I got here, even if it had its issues. I got my estradiol and everything was ok. But now that Dr. Sameh has left, the quality of care has absolutely tanked. Impossible to hear back about medication, MyChart requests go completely unanswered and I can't even get my Estradiol refilled through MyChart. I'm now a day away from my next injection which I need for labs and I still don't have my Estradiol, i've been calling and struggling for a week now to get a "Yes, its being prepared." Still no luck. I'll be looking into getting another primary care provider but it's difficult with how far everything is. If you are looking into going here, don't. At least not right now. Until they hire a new specialist, its not worth at all.

I've been coming to Proud for over two years now and I'm not sure what to make of it anymore. It's nigh impossible to get an appointment. Today I called to reschedule an appointment I had for early November but the earliest available appointment was almost two months away on December 29th. I get that they're short handed but is this a joke? Dr. Sam was rigid and obstinate but at least I could get an appointment with him. The staff has been hit or miss for a while now too. Depending on who you talk to your issue will either be taken care of in short order or never dealt with at all. And even then that's IF you can get in touch with anyone there in the first place. I have flat out given up trying to contact them through MyChart because no one ever answers. And calling on the phone is a crapshoot because the hours are apparently inconsistent and even if you call when they're open they may not answer. As I said I've been a patient here for two years and I would like to stay a patient here but between the turnover of providers and the difficulty getting simply getting to talk to someone on the phone I feel it's getting harder to justify doing so.

BSPC is an absolutely wonderful space. Extremely helpful doctors that ensure safety and keep you knowledgeable about your service. The receptionists are extraordinary themselves—friendly, professional, and kind. Shoutout to Ash, Jennifer, who if you even see in the hallways will stop to chat and compliment and help in any way they can. And to Dr. Sam, who is respectful, funny, and doesn’t hesitate to make sure you are safe and informed. Excellent experience overall.

I'm ever so thankful of the team here at RWJB Hospital Proud Center. They're great and beautiful people are surely responsible of the woman I'm becoming more everyday. The love and warmth jland not to mention the experience is so unreal! I wouldn't know where I'd be without them. They're definitely my guiding light of my transition, and life and general. A BIT shout out to Dr. Sam Abdelaal, Nirse Jamilah, Me Shane, Ms Jenn and especially Ms. Danielle King Absolutely 5 Star. Cheers to y'all. Keep being the wind under our community's wings.

I'm writing to positively review the HRT treatment I've received here! I've never had a negative experience here throughout my entire transitional journey. Ashley Harris is an absolute saint who will make you feel so seen; we shared our endeavors as trans men with each other and it was the first time I knew I was totally understood by someone behind any company's front desk. Dr. Sameh Abdelaal deserves more recognition and praise too! I learned more about my health in a single visit than I have at any other doctor's office. He will actually sit you down and go over your blood work with you, EXPLAINING all of the medical jargon that appears on the sheets and what's behind every abbreviation you see. He'll let you know what you need to keep an eye on, whether or not the numbers that appear are an immediate concern, or if you need to make another appointment and get back to him with the results for further discussion. Most importantly, these people are VERY good at following up with you. I have to drive here from Atlantic Highlands, but you know what? It's worth the distance for the service I get! Would recommend to any of my friends in the area!
