Located at the entrance to the medina, it was erected by the Aghlabid ruler Aboul Abbas I, nearly thirty years after the construction of the ribat of Sousse. This mosque is emblematic of a city which, a few years after the reign of Ziadet-Allah I, became the second city of Ifriqiya and the Sahel. Subsequently, the building was enlarged during the reign of Ibrahim II. The mosque, of rectangular plan, is composed of a courtyard with porticoes on which the prayer hall opens. Two towers, surmounted by domed aedicules, occupy the northeast and southeast corners of the courtyard; the northeast one is accessible by a staircase from the courtyard. The upper area of the porticoes is decorated with a Kufic inscription with slanted letters, inscribed in a basin-shaped band.

For a few dinars you can look around here - the women get a suitable robe in return. Very nice and informative.

This mosque, which is worth seeing with its different architecture, was built in 851 AD by Muhammad bin al-Aghleb I during the Aglebi period. It is located in the city center. It is an important monument of Aglebi architecture in the early Islamic period.

For 5 dinars you can take a look into the great mosque of Sousse. If women do not have their own, they are given a cloth to cover their heads. The mosque itself is chic, but very unspectacular. In 10 minutes you saw and photographed everything. The story is presented in short information boards in Arabic, English, French and German.

Beautiful and peaceful. Me and my friend went there for Asar prayer today and met some lovely ladies. They have a nice and clean little women's section and the mosque in itself is very serene. An absolute must

Good mosque. Prayer space to the left for women upon entry. Very useful as next to the Souques so you don’t miss a prayer during the shorter days.

A special place, it made me more determined on my path. Worth seeing, not overrun with tourism. Women should only enter the venerable mosque with a head covering. Ancient and beautiful... definitely worth seeing if you visit Sousse.
