My daughter needed to take several tests at MCC for her out of state University while at home for summer classes. She had no choice but to take these exams through their testing center, as the tests needed to be supervised. My daughter received confirmations of her first testing date. On the day of the test, she received a call from Joyce at MCC and told her not to come in because her University did not supply the correct testing info. Knowing the outstanding caliber of the University she attends and the horrible reputation MCC has, I told my daughter we would go to MCC to find out in person what the problem was. As I suspected, the staff DID NOT KNOW HOW TO OPEN A SIMPLE LINK. JOYCE WAS RUDE AND disrespectful to my daughter and told her she couldn't take the exam. As I was explaining these tests are crucial and need to be taken on time, this woman had a dumbfounded look on her face then proceeded to lie to us. I looked at Joyce in the testing center and said very slowly, " Who opened the link?" As we couldn't get a straight answer from her. Joyce turned to the woman sitting next to her and told her to call the police. So Joyce in the testing center wanted to call the police on a mother asking " Who opened the link" As it turned out, Joyce lied and never clicked on a link to open testing information from my daughter's university. This school did not know what to do with a simple link, then proceeded to intimidate me after asking a simple question. Not only is this a pathetic school, they have the worst courses and advising around. They have advised neighbor's kids to take classes, only to later tell the student they've taken the wrong ones. Something in the water here, people are very slow and quite stupid - don't send your child here. Joyce in the testing center is a confused idiot and doesn't seem to be aware of it. This is not academia - it's a disorganized mess of would- be educators confused and lacking in intelligence.

The professor at the school can be very insightful and helpful! However, beware of the councilors and some of the administration. The academic councilors were beyond incompetent and disrespectful. I tried to receive help on at least four separate occasions and each time I either left more confused than before or so infuriated at the way I was treated that I could not make heads or tails of the situation. I was once left waiting in the lobby for two and a half hours after I had scheduled a appointment and then sent away saying that they forgot to bring up my appointment and that I would need to reschedule. They also are no help when it comes to picking out classes that will transfer to other schools. They work hard to push getting your associates degree over transferring before graduation which is more expensive than transferring with just the credits you need.

I write this review with a very heavy heart, as I feel like the issues that have plagued myself and the important people in my life have not been improved on at MCC. Pros: MCC has an incredible range of teachers. The Criminal Justice instructors completely prepared me for transferring to a 4 year. They're so knowledgable in their field and love their students. I still go and visit them since they were so helpful and kind! I also like the variety of clubs they have at the school. There is something for everyone. Cons: This is where I get angry. I know so many people including myself, who have been swindled out of time and money by the counselors. They tell you to take classes, only to turn it around a few semesters later and say you never needed them. I spent a year and a half more there than I needed to, and my boyfriend has spent almost 2 years there more than needed. We were told we needed to take specific classes if we wanted to graduate, only to look at the actual 'planning progress' guide on MyMcc to see that there were numerous alternatives that could have been taken to receive the degree. Not to mention we both were never taught how to navigate the online planning guide, so we trusted the counselors for help. We've wasted thousands of dollars on classes that did not pertain to our majors. I would have spent more if I didn't talk to a teacher in my field, who gave it to me straight and helped me make a schedule of what classes to take that were absolutly necessary. I am still incredibly thankful, but it shouldn't be the teachers job to honestly help plan their classes. That's what a counselor is for. It still blows me away that after all this time this kind of behavior is still accepted. Bottom line is, if you're going here for a class or two for credit during the summer or in between semesters, go for it. If you want to receive a degree, be wary and trust your gut. Learn the (difficult) mechanics of the website, as it's way more reliable than any counselor.

The truth is this place cares more about are people offended than are they learning. Students shouldn't be sent to the POLICE DEPARTMENT because they said a swear word you hear 50 times on the radio driving to school. Not to mention the time a girl made a beautiful painting about how a woman is only ever regarded for her body and not the knowledge she can give the world, and said painting was called "pornography" by a member of the school board. Oh I'm sorry are the Greek and Roman statues of old also porn? Is the cisteen chapel? Not to mention lord have mercy nobody here can teach statistics. I shouldn't have teachers that get corrected on a daily basis by my classmates. It screws me over when I end up memorizing the incorrect way of doing something and then 45 minutes in the teacher realizes they made a mistake.

If I could give this school 0 stars, I would. The staff and administration are incompetent and beyond rude. I witnessed more maturity in high school. These grown adults throw tantrums because you're interrupting their conversation. The way I was "greeted" with nasty facial expressions and 5 minutes with my so called advisor, I never wanted to walk foot in there again. I wish I was aware that they ripped off my friend before I trapped myself here. I strongly recommend that if you do decide to go here, look closely at what they're actually charging you for and for how much. I was told to leave when I asked about what my fees meant. "Miscellaneous fees" just isn't specific enough, silly me.

Don't buy books from mcc I went to have my books bought back and they would not take them. They were bran new books that the school bought over the winter I never used them and they were in perfect condition. The lady that was working the bookstore was completely rude. I am very dissapointed in mcc I will not be attending next semester.

PSA! WARNING! RED FLAGS! Ginger Gorsky is quite awful, rude, and impatient- yes you are and you know it, I'm a student how dare you disrespect me!!!! I'm appalled as a young man and student, I don't know if it's because they are homophobic or maybe I said something the wrong way - Not sure, but major red flags attempting to get my degree completed here. Other than the very kind, patient , and helpful - Vicki Brennan -The overall administration has been extremely difficult to work with. I am trying to complete my last courses and am attending through military affiliation. They have no respect for my ambition to complete my degree and disregard many of my questions when I call at times never even answering. All the staff including Lynn Mcabe, and especially Ginger have truly made me feel intruding for trying to complete my work here and I am sick of it. I have called almost every day the last three weeks to try and reach solutions with financial aid and enrollment logistics - but apparently students are to much a burden for this staff even after I've been kind. I intend to be vocal and very public about my terrible experience at this college moving forward, There's only one side on this story and I intend to share it. This is my education that I mistakenly put in their hands. Yes I recommend students out of Highschool complete an AA, but not here - Harper has been much more helpful. Disgusted.

Honestly one of the most unprofessional, unmotivated, incompetent schools I have ever been to. None of the advisers seem to care or help with your future. I have been going here since 2010 and I still can't seem to find someone that knows what they are talking about. I have seen every single adviser there is at MCC and I get a different answer every time. I needed help figuring out how to transfer to a different University, and unfortunately I don't have any family members that can help with this because I am the first in my family to go to college, and I was hoping that MCC could help and guide me in the right direction. Every time I ask an adviser for suggestions or advice, they seem to always be in a hurry to get me out of their office and I leave feeling overwhelmed and even more confused. Getting in to see an adviser is a different story. They almost never do appointments, and when you go in on a walk-in basis, there is a chance you won't get seen due to the "overwhelming" amount of students. I have tried calling and leaving voicemail's, and even emailed them and never get a response. This school is a JOKE. I have been to Harper, and CLC and you can instantly see and feel a difference in the way the schools carry themselves. MCC clearly does not have our education in their best interest. I even had some weirdo come up to me in the cafeteria, looked at me straight in the eye, and pointed his index and middle finger at me in the form of a "gun" and use his iPod to sound off gun shot noises from that stupid app and insinuated that he was going to shoot me. He had a soulless dead stare in his eye that honestly scared the crap out of me and my friend went to report it to the school cop and his response was "Is this your first time here at MCC?". No, it's not, you D-bag, but if there is a school shooting, don't say we didn't warn you.

As far as instructors go, I cannot recommend MCC enough. Those I have currently, and have had in the past, go above, beyond, and well out of their way to assist students with material, so future students can rest assured that they will be in good hands. One thing I will say is, be ready to deal with ten kinds of attitude from financial aid, if and when you need to contact them. I've had to do so twice this semester - once for an issue they could have contacted me with when said issue happened and avoided the mix-up all together and once with a question about a grant I received - and on both occasions it seemed like I was bothering them. I got really snotty, condescending answers, so....be prepared to deal with that. That aside, though, I love MCC and highly recommend it, whether you're just starting out or heading back to school.

Edit: I'm updating my previous review but it still remains at a stellar 5 star. This is the best school I've been to. The people upstairs in Building A who run the advising and financial aid are mediocre but once you pass through that it is so amazing. I always register online for my classes so I don't have to wait in line. So if you like to be guided by the hand and told what courses you should take and not have to contemplate what you might like to take this is not the school for you. This is college, not elementary people, surprise! You actually have to think for yourself! (The audacity, I know) if you go in looking for private rich kid snobby type atmosphere where people carry you to wherever you need to go you're going to be disappointed. Apologies for the rant but I've seen so many people 1 starring this school over the most pretentious things. ---------------------------------------------------- Current student, awesome instructors (Minus the English professor Poe) they're super helpful, and that goes for pretty much the whole school too. You can stop a student if you have a question and they'll help you if they can. Great learning environment

It started off as an okay school to enroll at, I started May 2012. But now, the school is becoming like more of a expensive high school due to the maturity of both staff and students. The faculty alone is enough to make a student want to quit because they just don't care anymore for some reason. If you need to go for financial reasons, or to complete a course during the summer for your university, fine. But otherwise stay away from here. Go to CLC or another comunity college.

Generally I really liked MCC. Back in 2015 or 2016 Dr Socol literally watched p0rn while proctoring our chemistry final (we could tell because the overhead projector kept turning on) and SEVERAL of us saw it, reported it, and he was still allowed to teach. I (obviously)still think about it today.

Exemplary institution of higher learning with state-of-the-art facilities. The dedication of the new science center was just another example of McHenry County College leading the way in providing students with top educational facilities.

I can't say enough about the quality of instructors, education and opportunity offer at MCC. I was a graduate, a volunteer, a distinguished graduate, foundation board member and alumni committee member... and every time I walk into the school I am impressed by the activities I see, the vibrant atmosphere and the wonderful people I've met. They are constantly striving to be better, to give more to the community and to make education as affordable as possible for all.

I got my associates here and generally the college is great. SAGE is awesome and the staff seem to genuinely want to help especially with scholarships. Clubs are nice and the disability center is helpful. But please... avoid Socol at all costs. Worst teacher with tons of reports against him with nothing done. Lots of demeaning and belittling with a hint of s*xism.

I recently visited McHenry County College on a tour and was impressed by the organization and variety of professions that can be pursued there. I was particularly pleased with how friendly and attentive the staff was. This was evident as soon as I entered the building, and the employees were ready to assist me with any questions I had. They assured me that I could count on their support and assistance in the future. Overall, I think that McHenry County College is an excellent place for those seeking quality education in various professional fields. I recommend this college to anyone who wants to receive a high-quality education and learn new skills. Thank you for the wonderful tour!

In comparison with a foreign university, in-person classes and teachers are excellent. They are passionate about their work, support and motivate students to learn. They offer generous feedback. I was not lazy to apply for different types of aid that college offers; all of them were approved. I wish the cafe offered more variety of healthier food. That is the only downside.

This place is great. I have nothing but good memories from here. I'm now at a larger university and I wish that the professors here cared as much for their students as the professors at MCC. This place is more than capable of preparing a student for a larger college. Especially for STEM majors. I would recommend everyone who's on the fence to enroll for a semester.

This college is perfect for preparing students to transfer to 4 year universities. I'm on my last semester at NIU and I believe the whole NIU experience would have been 10 times harder if not for all the help I got from the instructors at MCC. They truly do care about each and every student and are willing to help them succeed. If going to a 4 year college isn't for you then they have other career ready programs that can help you land jobs in your field. I highly recommend MCC to all my friends and to anyone looking to succeed in life.

If I could give a school zero stars; I would. This school is ableist, lying, and manipulating. They are gatekeepers to education and denied me reasonable accommodations for my disabilities. I went through their Disability Center and they were also very unhelpful. To say the least. One of them even insinuated I was lying about having my accommodations at a previous college at one point. The Dean, Adriene Hutchinson, does not care about disabled people at all. I went in asking for notecards to go with my testing, due to memory impairment and literal brain damage to my memory from my disorders, and they rounded up my level of impairment from 66 to a 70% just so they could deny me the notes on my exam. I ended up meeting with them several times over months of time and they offered me ZERO VISUAL AIDS and extended time. Hahaha. A literal joke for me because I cannot pass school without my accomodations. I ended up going to Harper, who didn't even ask for my diagnostic paperwork and approved unlimited use of notes during my exams. They never ONCE questioned my previous accommodations, believed me as a person, and offered tons of resources to help me succeed at school. Adriene? She pushed me to take a math course, knowing I've failed alegebra 3 times now, WITHOUT NOTES. HAhaha. After denying me all help, she tried to sell me on taking a math class there. I was like, Are you crazy???? I've spent several months trying to get these notes because I NEEED THEM. Not optional. But she just operated like a robot and denied me any help. Do not go here if you need accommodations if you have memory impairment. They will bleed you dry of all your energy to avoid providing them. I would sue them for all this right now but I'm focused on passing school and not years of lawsuits. I did file a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights, though. So hopefully they do something. Point Blank; This school isn't disability friendly AT ALL. They will throw you through hoops and deny you accommodations. They refuse to accommodate even if you had the accommodations at a previous school. Adreine, I hope you're ashamed of yourself as a person who is supposed to help. You did no such thing and you degraded me as a human. Shame on you.

Mcc is the best community college in IL. The negative other reviews don’t make sense to me. I had a great 2 years here and learned a lot. As far as teachers go, they have some of the best and they always go out of their way to help you. The administration is super cool and the counselors always helped me with what classes I needed. Love that the campus is smaller than CLC and has many flexible online courses. However, I do have a tight schedule with my job and drive from Fox Lake to Schaumburg daily, Mon-Sat 6 days a week. Because I take 5 online classes as well, I don't have time to just take hours out of my work schedule to drive out to Crystal Lake at any given time. This makes it difficult to receive the loans I need for school because they won't allow you to fax or email anything over to their office. I'm frusturated that the school does not accommodate those who are working full-time and going to school full-time. The staff tends to be unhelpful and not understanding when I've called for assistance. Good thing I'm transferring this Fall..

I have been a student here almost since it opened. Mostly in the art dept and IT. I am so impressed by this organization in general. They lose one star because there is a small faction there who don't understand that students are customers, not annoyances, but that is a SMALL faction. they also need to improve the very user-not-friendly-website. However, you or your family member will receive high quality teaching with high quality resources. The ceramics program, especially, is perhaps better than some found in four year institutions. Hands on teaching. Personal attention when need. Outstanding curriculum. The new president is very student focused and wonderfully responsive to input from the public. We have seen changes made that helped the quality of campus life and provided an understanding of student's needs. The campus police are very approachable and eager to help where needed. The cafeteria staff is wonderful. The food is even good. there are tuition allowances for senior citizen and, I think, for single parents. There are things here you wouldn't believe including a collection of priceless pieces of art in the library If you are looking for a place to begin a college career or to earn any of a variety of degrees, or you are just a life-long learner like me, you should come out and explore MCC. My sons did their first two years here. My husband takes classes here. They'd have to throw me out to get me to leave Tom Vician's ceramics program. What an incredible community resource this is!
