The best fish and chips that I have ever eat in England so far ! Nice environment - central location in South Shields. Parking nearby available. Worth it for more than one visit. Friendly and fast service and high quality food. The prices are quite decent. Also you can find organic beer to enjoy with your meal. I recommend this place for a tasty & quality fish and chips!

Great experience! Would come again for the food and atmosphere. Service was prompt and friendly. Prices were reasonable and taste was great. Fish was firm and moist, with a nice crispy outer thst stayed crispy even after getting back to my room. Chips were done right. Would definitely come again. ✨️✨️Best Fish & Chips ✨️✨️

Honestly the best place to go for fish and chips! Hands down there is simply no comparison. Good is fantastic and staff are really helpful. Had cod and chips, cheese patty and chips, served with mushy peas, gravy and batter! Was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. Thanks for being helpful with the pram and holding doors. Food is fantastic and staff are so lovely!! Thanks you!!

It had been years since I had been in here and I was very impressed with the revised decor. The place was very busy, which made for a good atmosphere. Despite the fact that it was busy, we still got served at a reasonable time. The food was spot on and the portions were ample. Prices were on par with the market, I believe it was Β£13.95 for battered cod and chips. We would go again. The photo I have uploaded doesn't convey the size of the fish; it was massive. However, the wide angle lens used makes it look smaller.

Having walked past Colman's many times, when passing today, I decided to sit in a see what the fuss was all about. I was slightly annoyed by the missing apostrophe on their logo, but turned a blind eye. On entering the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised to find it well sir conditioned, and at first glance, very clean. I chose to sit next to their 'water wall', which was unfortunately a mistake, because for want of a better word, it was minging! I ordered my cod and chips and whilst I waited, read some of their literature. I noted with mild disappointment that they fry in vegetable oil, which they justified with various health benefits. I personally don't choose to eat fish and chips to have a healthy meal and always find beef dripping to provide a far better flavour. When my food came, it was clearly freshly cooked. The cod was in a wonderfully crispy batter and the fish was clearly of good quality with no sign of cod worms. The chips however were disappointing. Some were so sharp it was painful to eat them and they lacked flavour. I would place them at the very lower end of chippy chips. Overall, I did enjoy my meal but felt I could get much better elsewhere, and at a significantly lower cost.

A bit more expensive than other places but the quality and quantity makes it worthwhile. Staff are always friendly and service is quick. During the summer usually crowded at the restaurant and takeaway counter, during the winter on week days no problems.

We've been visiting Colman's for years and always enjoyed it. However, the past few visits haven't been good, with this visit being our last. We went to the restaurant and waited 5 minutes to be seated while staff stood doing nothing. There weren't many tables occupied. We were given the choice of two tables right in front of the door so it was freezing and even worse when the door was opened. Others after us were given seats further into the restaurant. Our menus were thrown on the table. We waited a further 10mins to order. I ordered the special but asked for gravy instead of peas and was told no as gravy is more expensive (??) I informed the waitress that we've had this every time previously and she told me I hadn't as they've never done this, she was calling me a liar! I always order exactly the same and am well aware of what iv always had. Her attitude was appalling. We walked out. We went to the takeaway where we waited 25 minutes on the street for our order as you are no longer allowed inside. The food was absolutely not worth it, Β£21 for two supposedly large cod and chips and one water. The fish was tiny and over cooked and the chips very dry. Sad as this place used to be great, seems they are cutting costs while changing customers more.

Booked a table for four today for dinner, was extremely disappointed to be told upon arrival that only the crispy oysters were available, a restaurant that boasts of having a oyster bar shouldnt run out of such an item. Food was average, we had cod and chips the smaller classic version which was enouth and I had scampi which unfortunately looked like the type you get out of the bag from the frozen section. dessert was unfortunately a bit of a disaster as my sticky toffee pudding came with a strip of sharp metal which luckily didn't cut my mouth, the manager was good and swiftly put things right by refunding our deserts and second drink order. All in all food was average, service was OK, location was nice with the sea view, cost around 60 for four mains and a round of drinks plus two sides.

The best battered sausage and gravy ever had. Chips good but I'm old fashioned Yorkshireman and like dirty oil but you can't do that these days.

Great Seafood place in a unique building right on the seafront to eat and watch beach life as it happens. Have eaten here before inside and wasn't disappointed. But yesterday tried their new oyster and cocktail area which is situated outside. Nice area nicely done out with nice comfy chairs.. Only had cocktails this time but where delicious and very reasonable in price Big shout out to the 2 male staff members who really knew how to help and their service was spot on... Give this place a try you won't be disappointed

Went recently, beautiful haddock and lovely chips, not greasy, cooked fresh and very tasty!

Fantastic. Straightforward menu, cheery prompt service, and excellent food at a good value. Avoid ordering alcohol, you can get more for less at nearby pubs and you shouldn't be going to a fish and chip shop for booze anyway. Recommend ordering curry sauce for chip dipping. For other Americans: mushy peas sounds gross as a name but they're actually quite tasty, at least at this place.

This is one of the best fish and chip shops anywhere. Food and service are excellent, but I don't go to chip shop restaurants for atmosphere. The atmosphere is a good busy chippy which is as it should be. For the first time I ate their hand produced scampi, it was excellent. Never had a bad meal here. Only downside is it can be very busy and the que can be down the street. No booking of tables, first come first served.

Huge portion, tasty and fresh Catch of the Day cod! For about 12Β£ you can get a very worthwhile meal! 10/10 will come again, with friends! Boats of fish will come daily!

Long like but moved quickly and well worth the wait. Delish gosh and chips. We tried a sausage and I’d skip that but if there again there will be a next time.

The greatest chippy in Britain! Possibly the world! Always good fish and chips and now serving Samuel Smith beer! What's not to like.

Went here for fish and chips and can honestly say they were absolutely beautiful. They staff were very very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We had a disabled lady with us and it was no problem getting around the tables.we will definitely be returning.

Fresh and delicious. This seriously is the best fish and chips I've ever had. The fish is sustainably caught and supplied and the shop recycles all of it's oil. Totally worth a try!

First class, gourmet fish 'n' chips, available with the usual chip shop 'sides' but done perfectly. Has a 100 year pedigree in the town and the experience & food quality to match. Try their home made tartar sauce, mushy peas, curry sauce and mug of tea and a breadbun. Best fish 'n' chips I've ever had served by friendly, accommodating staff.

Went today and a cod and chips take away from the hatch is now Β£8.95. Wow, sign of the times for sure. Last Sunday it was Β£8.45. Before COVID when you could go into the take-away and not use the hatch, it was Β£6.20. It's still the best in Shields though. Smith's Chippy up the road is currently Β£7.70 for a cod and chips but their cod are always smaller than Colman's by about 2". Cost is proportionate. The counter staff are more pleasant in Smith's but I guess the whole standing in the road thing with all the road traffic makes that difficult at Colman's vs standing in the shop at Smith's Chippy.

Checked the website before going. Gluten free fish and chips available. When I arrived they only do that once a month but haven’t done it for many months!!! I had to accept fish without batter. Asked fir cod and was served Pollock - cheapskates. Will NEVER go there again.

Excellent fish and chip restaurant. I had the special scampi, it was truly delicious and succulent. A nice glass of Pinot grigio and a sticky toffee pudding to finish. Friendly staff, very clean. Very happy

Needing to wait outside for a table, it didn't take long, the staff were very observant. The restaurant was really nicely set out with multiple toilets and areas to seat. Alone, I was seated at the back and would have preferred somewhere different but the place was very full and so I just assume that the back seat was all they had left. service was almost instant and lunch arrived soon afterwards. The chips were a bit of a let down. Buried under a few chunky chips, there was a lot of shrapnel fragments but I guess that was just my bad luck and maybe the next person got the fat ones. The mushy peas were nice and moist, with just a hint of sweetness. The Cod, advertised as wild caught, no bones and cooked in fresh clean oil and tasted very fresh, the flakes were a bit weak though and crumbled too easily. I've had better at the Harbour View fish restaurant in Seaton Sluice. The walls adorned by old pictures of past celebrities and political members of the two main parties, it was like a bit of history and made one remember ones age. Thank you staff, for a lovely afternoon.

Amazing fish and chips, my husband could jot even finish his. The fish was beautifully cooked and the chips and peas were great! Staff were friendly and attentive. Food served very quickly. Definitely worth the journey to have great fish and chips! Childs portion was MASSIVE for our nearly 3 year old. Only had about a quarter! Would probably ask for a small plate to let him have some of ours next time.

😠 Went to The Grotto with my husband yesterday, had high hopes of enjoying a delicious meal together. The smell of animals was really bad but thought we'd stay because the menu was tempting. We ordered a starter & a main each, I got creamy garlic prawns and hubby got spicy prawns and both were bland,...
