I love the wall arts around the area. I think by just adding some arts to the city can help boost the tourist attraction. As an artist, I think this form of art work need to be support by the local business and the city or even the governtment. Lets me tell you this, out door painting is not fun if you don't love what you were doing.

It’s OK not the best architectural building but the area is nice to walk around and it’s very close to the stairs with colored tiles

The arches look nice, but there are a lot of homeless people sleeping under the arches, and the whole place smell like urine.

Cool structure that is lit up at nights. Also the location of a cool night market. There are several street vendors offering different kinds of food, drinks, jewelry and other craft items at very affordable prices. Pretty busy at nights and only seems to get busier the later it gets.

The nightlife in Lapa is rightfully world-renowned, though it is advised to keep your wits about you and only go where you feel safe and comfortable. Just beneath the Arches come a wide variety of stalls selling food and drinks in the evening. Now, onto the boring stuff: The Lapa Arches in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are a famous historic landmark. These grand arches, also known as the "Arcos da Lapa" in Portuguese, were built in the 18th century and originally served as an aqueduct. Today, they are both a functional bridge for trams and a symbol of Rio's rich architectural heritage. Tourists often visit the Lapa Arches for their unique blend of history and urban transportation.

I mean, it’s pretty and all but the place around it is a dump. There is a lot of trash and litter around. It seems like it would be dangerous after dark as well. Worth walking by if you are near but definitely don’t go out of your way.

Awesome structure to view from the streets below. I liked how it's illuminated at night. Next time I visit I'll ride the trolly over the top of it! Wouldn't that be cool?!

Nice architecture but the place is not very nice during the day. A lot of homeless people and it's a bit dirty. During the night the palace becomes a party lair. That is something worth to check too,

These iconic arches are located in Lapa, a pretty neighborhood in the historical Rio´s center, core of the Carioca´s nightlife. They were built in 1750, and they are a part of the ancient city aqueduct. The tram, called "Bondinho" in Portuguese, that goes above the arches, is another popular attraction and tourists can take a ride to experience a bit of the local´s everyday life. Unfortunately a French visitor died in 2011 because the vehicle had an accident. Since then the structure has been closed and, apparently, it was only re-opened to the public in 2015. If I was you, I would probably think twice before going for a ride with the Bondinho. I did it, I’m still alive, but you can never trust Rio´s authorities, so BE CAREFUL! Pickpokets and assaults are also an issue. The area can be pretty dangerous, especially during the night, so my advice is to visit it wearing a very simple outfit and carrying as less stuff as possible. Then again, I've been to Lapa many times, days and nights, and nothing ever happened. Just be smart. Without being too paranoid, the Arcos da Lapa are too nice to be missed!

Do not stay here between the hours of 3am and 8am. You will get robbed. I’m a local and I’ve never been robbed but I see many people getting robbed between these hours every day.

Pretty cool place . I’m Posting for the carnival and this is the spot to be during my boat for partying and I use it as a marker for where I’m am because my hotel is near it.

Interesting to look at but that's about it - tram through Santa Teresa runs over the top of this

Nice enough site and makes for some good photos but just isn’t safe. Muggings during the day. Always travel with a group and without expensive items on show / backpacks.

Simple and plain at day but at night it comes alive with people, food and drinks. A historic aqueduct built in the 18th century.

Everyone spoke about visiting this place but unfortunately it’s no longer possible to stop there to get a good photo. Lots of people in vulnerable situations living under the arches. A general sense of unease when walking by here. It’s beautiful but not very safe.

Great area for street vendors, hangouts, and sometimes events. Unfortunately lots of homeless also live around here.

I can't recommend visiting these unfortunately. I thought the arches looked nice in the pictures but they were in a terrible condition when we visited. They were crumbling, very dirty and covered in graffiti. The surrounding area was also a dive. We were asked very agressively for money here by people and there was no police around dealing with them. I think if you spent long enough here someone would make a genuine attempt to mug you. For the risks involved in visiting and for how poor a condition the arches and the nearby selaron steps are in, I'd definitely give them a miss with hindsight

Wonderful piece of architecture that's not used as an aquaduct these days but as part of a special team line that people can enjoy and it includes crossing the beautiful aquaduct. It's a real treat but expect the need to queue.

Did a great walking tour around this area. Lots of fun. Great history and explanation

Went during night time. Homeless/sketchy area, do not comit same mistake I did. Tell Uber driver to drop you off in the restaurants close by ,not in the arc itself. Then walk there if you feel adventurous. Night I went police had a standing post right there. Leave valuables at home. And enjoy the night in the bars close by.

Nothing spectacular but worth waiting for a tram to go on the top, makes for an interesting picture.

The view of the arches was spectacular. The architecture made you stand and just look. Lots of other things to visit in that area. The steps, Columbo and the Santa Teresa Convent. Don’t miss this!

Suprisingly cool to walk in the evenings... just dont bring your expensive stuff with you when you walk around. On certain nights you could find kiosks and stalls selling food and cheap caiprinha.

I've only been on Saturdays for the Hippie Fair shopping which is great. There are many bars, live music on the corner, good food, and there's one restaurant/bar/club near the end on the left that you absolutely check out. The vendors there on Saturday will tell you this place is the best. When leaving if you look up, you can see the home where the nuns live.

Beautiful aqueduct. It is one of those places that is better to visit during the evening, when it is lively full of people and places to grab a drink and listen to some music. During the day it doesn’t feel so safe. You can ride over the arches with the tram that connects the center (largo da Carioca) with Santa Teresa - R$20 both ways.
