TLDR: The food is authentic and delicious. The service is phenomenal. We missed this place while it was closed for renovations. We fell in love with it three years ago when we were on a weekend trip to Cranbrook. The staff are the nicest people ever. So kind and welcoming. Service is always great. They check in on you multiple times and have never been rude. They are happy to serve anyone with a smile. The food, wow. The bread is so good and always fresh, forgive me for not remembering the name of it. It's one of my favorite things here. We get the meat combo for two and love the B1 berbere beef and the C3 chicken with potatoes as well as three veggies sides and the Katengna appetizer (berbere bread). It's not TOO spicy but all of the food has at least some kick to it. I will warn you that you won't be offered silverware. Don't worry, you won't need it. But if you request it they have it. They will also offer a hot towel before and after the meal to clean your hands. They have a bar here that can make their signature cocktails and smoothies. I had the one with rum and ginger beer. It was delicious. They weren't able to make a Manhattan (my normal drink) because they only serve drinks on their list. It's not a small list and looked like they had something for everyone. Try this place if you want something different that feels like comfort food. Try this place if service and atmosphere is important to you. You'll love it!

Waited more than an hour for food/ drinks. All the menu items were not available. It’s 55$ per person for 1 appetizer, smoothie/tea , entree, dessert that is available on that day. the food quantity was very less when compared to other Ethiopian restaurants where we tried. We didn’t had an option to choose just appetizer and entree and just pay for that.

Loved Taste of Ethiopia. Got a meat combo and veggie combo. Food was excellent. Of the meat options, I would say get the A1, B1, and C3 (chicken stew) not C1 which was the drumstick. The flavor is a weird smokey bitter type taste. Not my fave, you might like it but just not my preferences. Everything else was excellent tho across meat and veggies.

I had the dish in the photos at the recommendation of the manager, and it was incredible! Nice portion and very rich flavor. I ordered it spicy and it had such a perfect spicy to flavor ratio. I will definitely be back

This was some of the best Ethiopian food I have ever eaten. For those new to ethiopian, I suggest the vegetable feast and the meat feast so you can try a little bit of everything in order to find your favorites. Some items are spicy (a little kick, not like melt your face), but all together with some of the others being mild and still others being tangy it quickly turns in to a culinary adventure in which each bite is a new happy little surprise. The delicious injera was perfectly sour and spongy and soaked up all of those dishes exquisitely. It was well worth the drive for me, which was an hour each way. The ladies that helped me were lovely people that went above and beyond. They were friendly, gracious and accommodating. I really hope this is one of those small businesses that survives the pandemic so we all can eat there again and again!

I’ve never had Ethiopian food and it was a great first experience. The service members were very kind. I enjoyed the food. It’s definitely a different cuisine, but I thought it was delicious. If you don’t like strong flavored foods or a lot of spices, this is not the cuisine for you. You are supposed to eat everything with the injera. I didn’t mind it but didn’t love it. It’s kind of a spongy bread and doesn’t have a lot of flavor. I would come back here for sure!

Delicious food, fabulous service. Fantazia is a great hostess. Made us feel so welcome and explained to us about the food we were going to eat. The process of coffee making with roasted beans was a unique experience in itself.

My party of four and I left this restaurant all still very hungry. Portion sizes have decreased from a few months ago.I’m sure they will say it’s because costs for them have went up. That’s no excuse to cut portion sizes in HALF. Overpriced for what you get. Quality is not bad but not great either. Service is very slow and no water refills. The black waitress with purple hair had a bad attitude. This used to be our favorite restaurant but we will not be back.

Sept 2021 Update -- Had to come back here! Finally had the chance and we were not disappointed. While we were not greeted by the same person, our experience was similar. COVID has not been kind to the restaurant business, so some adjustments were to be expected. In this case, lamb dishes are off the menu. However, all the rest is still there, and still just as tasty as we remembered it. We again ordered a sampler plate and the Ethiopian Coffee. When the food arrived, we were surprised to see it served on a dish with different compartments for each item and no Injera at the bottom. We asked the server about that and was told that most of their clientele do not understand Ethiopian food or customs and so they ended up throwing away most of the Injeras, and therefore decided to switch serving modes to minimize this waste. She also told us that - since we knew the right way - we should ask for it to be served traditional style - on the Injera - and they would be very happy to do so. As we were waiting for our food, and enjoying it, some other people came in to order and it was obvious that Ethiopian food is quite a novelty to most as the customers were asking many basic questions about it. The server answered them very patiently - only drawing the line at requests for samples!. Several people ordered rice instead of Injera which we found odd, and when we asked the server about that, she indicated that explaining how Injera is made (fermented teff) made people nervous, so she calls it bread and they offer rice as something most Americans are more familiar with - even though it is not done that was "at home". Coffee was great, and prices are still very reasonable. Can't wait to come back yet again! 2019 -- What a great find! We were looking for a lunch place and found this thanks to Google Maps. Good thing as it is rather unobtrusive. We were the only patrons and the owner could not be nicer. She greeted us warmly, explained the dishes and their policies, and took great delight in answering our questions. We got sampler meals to taste a greater variety. Food comes out quite fast as most of it is stewing to absorb flavors. And flavors are fantastic! Each of the dishes is mounded on a section of an injera. You get more of the fermented bread to use to scoop up the food. The various sauces help hokld everything together, but a great pleasure is to tear up chunks of the serving injera at the end and eat it! The owner was kind enough to prepare the traditional Ethiopian coffee for us as well. This included roasting the beans, geinding them, and then pouring them along with the special spice in it to flavor. Altogether an excellent meal and experience!!

We love this place! Food and service is amazing. We were so sad while it was closed but we made sure to attend the grand opening. It was as good as ever. We both love B1 and C3 on our meal for two. The bread is to die for. You can't go wrong here. Everything is delicious!

Always amazing food! Best for comfort food or curing a hangover. The chicken tibs is my favorite meat option and we love to do the vegetarian combo with it. All the veggies are fantastic. I wasn't crazy about it but now I crave it. Don't worry about not knowing Ethiopian food as the staff are very excited to teach you and guide you on what to order. They are very lovely and kind.

I absolutely adore this place of business the service is impeccable, the food is one of its kind and the atmosphere is that of Ethiopian royalty, the vegan options are my favorite but they cater to all dietary needs I recommend the veggies combo for 1 or 2 your won’t lose its a Big win for your mind body and spirit so go check the out in Southfield your won’t be disappointed they also have vegan baklava, and other vegan desserts and the customer service is the best I’ve had I’d consider this a 5 star review go check them out and as always save me some.

Saw this place while driving by and stopped in for lunch. Got the meat combo plate on a platter for two (V2, 3, 4 / B1 / C3) and after meal coffee for two. We opted to eat with our hands as we had Ethiopian food before. There was hot towel service before and after our meal. The food was delicious and filling. No regrets; everything was very pretty good and I'm looking forward to tasting more things on the menu. Compliments to the chef/owner who was gracious enough to chat with us for a while. She was happy and suprised to see that we were familiar enough with Ethiopian cuisine to not order Jollof rice and Fufu (West African cuisine). All in all, great Ethiopian food experience, will come though again!

perfect for a quiet dining experience, when you don't mind eating with your fingers. Ethiopian beer is ok, but my money is on fish dishes. Spend your dollars on fish or lamb, worth it.

The owner is amazing and hospitable, as was our server. The food was great and they offer samples to anyone who is uncertain on what to order. We sealed dinner with their house coffee...it ruined all other coffee for me. 5 stars.

VEGAN friendly! Yum!! I was browsing places to eat that were friendly to my vegan diet and I came across Taste of Ethiopia and I couldn’t believe it. I’ve never had Ethiopian food, but now that I have, I’m very happy. I got the vegetarian combination platter where you chose 6 different options. The flavors were interesting but good! Very wholesome and healthy meal! Staff was friendly too. I’ll definitely be coming back. I like to see restaurants like this get good business and I hope whoever is reading this gives it a try!

Unbelievably delicious! My first time at Taste of Ethiopia and Paulette* put together an amazing meal. Meat combo with spicy beef stew, green beans/carrots, and collard greens was a great first choice. If only I could give more stars!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The food was pretty good and it didnt take too long to come out. The staff is great people. We had the veggie combo and squash soup. The teff injera was more enjoyable than other places ive tried. some of the items were more or less flavorful/salty than other ethiopian places with different spices as well. Personally i think its kind of expensive and it could be a nicer experience without tap water. (that statement is applicable to other popular ethiopian restuarant as well)

A good friend of mine and I share the same birthday month and every year we celebrate by going to dinner. I wanted him to select where we would eat and he chose this restaurant. This was my first visit and it was a great choice. To my surprise, the food was actually delicious. Service was superb. I will definitely dine I or order from Taste of Ethiopia again. I'll also recommend to others. 😁

Our meal was hot, and delicious. The wonderful flavors of Ethiopian cuisine made this dinner feel like a true cultural get away. I appreciate the extra effort made to offer gluten-free injera. The owner is gracious and attentive to her guests. We will be return often.

Traditional and authentic Ethiopian cuisine. Great for vegetarian and gluten free options. Bonus, fresh pressed juices! You won't regret it! Food cooked with love. Service can be slow depending on traffic in store, but so worth it.

Absolutely the best Ethiopia food ever. Not only are they friendly. Not only does the food taste great. The food is healing to your soul and body. I had been feeling a lil sick stomach and sinus issue. It was still bothering me until I ate my dinner here at Taste of Ethiopia. My sinuses cleared up and my stomach stop hurting almost after the meal. So I know the food is clean and healthy. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GRRAT PLACE TO EAT.

My first time dining here was so delicious! This is more than a meal, it’s a whole experience. I had never had this cuisine before so I ordered a combo that allowed me to try the beef stew, green lentils, and spiced potatoes. Everything tasted so delicious. I also had an appetizer that our server recommended as well as the fried plantains for dessert. Everything I ate was delicious and I am definitely planning yo go back. The decor is nice, the restaurant is very clean and comfortable, and the music was lovely. Our server was wonderful and helpful. They also have a mini store area with spices and tea blends so if you go, check that out too!

This was my second time eating at Taste of Ethiopia. A friend of mine introduced me to this restaurant, and I was excited to introduce another friend to their amazing food and wonderful, warm service, and we were not disappointed. We have the eight item sample platter and every vegetable was so savory, well seasoned, and delicious!

First time eating Ethiopian food, and it won’t be the last. Everything was divine from the doro tibs to the Yatakilt Wet. Who knew cabbage, carrots and garlic could taste so good! I even tried the Afro plantain dessert—never thought about pairing Ice cream with plantain. I’ve been living below my privilege and you have, too if you haven’t eaten here. (And everything was up to code for servicing in the pandemic. Felt extremely safe.)

Unprofessional, very bad customer service..... I called to order my gluten free Ethiopian enjra and the lady who picked up the phone said you have to order it before 4 days for right now we don’t have it,then I asked her can u take my order right now and she said yes and told me to come and picked it up after 4 days.. Saturday 4:00 pm which is today , I called her to tell her I’m on my way to pick up my order she said they don’t have it. I ask her why you didn’t let me know earlier? at list I can buy or ordered it from somewhere else .. she said she called me and left a voice message which is a lie, if she dose I will never drive 20 min to get there!!

My first time eating Ethiopian food and it was great. The spongy injera reminded me of a fluffy crepe with a little bit of a sour taste, but in a good way. When you scoop up the meat or veggies with the injera, it all works. The rice had kidney beans in it here and there and had chili seasoning in it. I called in my order on a Saturday night. They told me 30 min and it was a bit longer than that, but it was done right and staff was very friendly. I was happy to wait the extra few minutes. I am looking forward to going back and trying some of the vegetarian options.

  • 4/5 Micah S. 3 years ago on Google
The vegetarian dishes were excellent, but the beef awaze tibs were a little tough. Flavors were all great, and I really enjoyed the shai tea. Staff was courteous. I also really appreciated how seriously they took the pandemic stuff, having a hand washing and sanitization station right at the entrance, and checking temperatures on arrival, in addition to everyone wearing masks. Would definitely go back again, though probably when it's not so hot outside as the AC wasn't cutting it.
