Before
I
arrived
in
Sri
Lanka
I
had
only
come
across
the
Batik
Factory
at
Ambalangoda
during
my
research.
My
tuk
tuk
driver
told
me
to
make
sure
I
checked
out
the
Batiks
in
Hikkaduwa
and
I
am
so
glad
I
found
this
place!
As
I
approached,
the
artist
Wimal
called
to
me
from
his
workshop
and
showed
me
the
process
of
how
they
are
made
(and
explained
that
the
larger
pieces
with
many
colours
take
several
weeks
from
start
to
finish!)
Then
he
gave
me
a
quick
tour
of
his
garden,
which
is
an
absolute
paradise
of
mangoes,
avocados,
pineapples,
cinammon,
guavas,
and
passion
fruit
trees!
I
looked
around
his
shop
while
his
lovely
wife
and
son
picked
me
some
fruit
to
take
home.
As
I
browsed,
Wimal
pointed
out
the
different
techniques
he
uses,
from
a
marbled
effect
to
tiny
dots
-
the
intricate
details
showing
the
hours
of
work
he
puts
in
-
and
told
me
he
is
carrying
on
the
family
business,
the
special
techniques
being
passed
down
from
his
great-grandfather
or
even
further
back.
In
the
end
I
walked
away
with
an
amazing
shirt
and
a
beautiful
wall
hanging,
wishing
I
had
more
money
to
spend
this
trip!
I
highly
recommend
a
visit
here.
The
prices
were
much
less
than
in
Ambalangoda,
and
whilst
the
other
factories
I
saw
had
small
or
large
teams
of
ladies
making
batiks,
here
it
was
just
Wimal,
and
meeting
him
and
his
family
made
for
a
personal
experience
as
well
as
picking
up
some
beautiful
pieces
to
remember
my
trip.
