Very ancient temple of great historical significance, located in the village of dambadeniya. I visited this on my way from colombo to dambulla, and was instantly mesmerised. The statue of Buddha lying, was beautiful. The vibe of the place was too good, and we got to learn a lot of facts about how Buddhism came to Srilanka from India. The museum here was also totally worth it

Dambadeniya Kingdom once served as the capital of Sri Lanka during the mid-13th century. King Vijayabahu 111 established this Kingdom on 1236 AD. King Vijayabahu 111 elder son Parakramabahu became a king of Dambadeniya and recovered Polonnaruwa from Kalinga. He was considered a genius, who was a great poet and a prolific writer. Among the book he wrote are Kausilumina which is considered great piece of literature. King Bosath Vijayabahu as the elder son of King Parakramabahu 11 the second was crowned in 1270 AD. He was well known for his modest behaviour and for his religious activities. He was killed in the second year of his regin by a Minister called Miththa. After the demise of his elder brother Vijayabahu, Bhuvanekaba as the next in line to the throne, shifted the capital to Yapahuwa reason of security.

The old British colonial administration building has recently been renovated and has an interesting collection of artwork, carvings and everyday items from Anuradhapura and other historic sites around Sri Lanka. Exhibits include a restored relic chamber, found during the excavation of the Kantaka Chetiya dagoba at nearby Mihintale, and a large-scale model of Thuparama Dagoba’s vatadage (circular relic house) as it might have been if a wooden roof had existed.

Rather a small museum. But the staff is friendly. Ready to help and knowledgeable. They said that this is a newly built addition and if you have the time just pay a visit.

Anuradhapura Archaeological Museum (Also known as Puravidu Bhavana) is one of the archaeological museums of Sri Lanka. It is situated in the old kachcheri building, between the Brazon palace and Ruwanwelisaya. The museum was established in 1947 under the prime effort of Dr. Senarath Paranavithana. Anuradhapura Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest museum in the Cultural Triangle area and it has been proposed to name as the National Museum of the Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka. The museum is used to exhibit antiquities found from various regions of Sri Lanka. Such as Buddha statues, inscriptions, drawings, puppets, coins, jewelleries, Beads and other miscellaneous things. Among these antiquities there is a model of the Thuparamaya Vatadage and a relic chamber found at Mihintale Kantaka Chetiya Dagoba. many ancient stuff available here.

Do not buy the tickets here! It is a tourist scam! We bought the horrendously overpriced tickets for all the sites in anuradhapura here but actually never needed it as all of the sites are actually free! The museum itself is extremely poorly maintained with people burning plastic on the premises. Avoid

The museum building is currently being renovated. There are stone antiquities in the grounds that you can see, but with very little context. But you can buy the US$25 tickets for Anuradhapura at the gate.

Dambadeniya Raja Maha Viharaya can be visited easily on your way from Colombo to Anuradhapura. Also the photos show the path to the kingdom. It was amazing hike! There were nearly 380 steps to climb up. Once you climb about 300 steps could view the whole village. It was beautiful. Thereafter the steps were straight up but my Mom at the age of 89 had courage to reach the top. People who love hiking can enjoy with memorable experience
