Whatever
your
religious
affinity,
a
trip
to
Srinagar,
especially
during
summer
season,
is
a
good
respite
from
the
sweltering
heat
of
the
plains.
Yes,
this
is
unlike
any
other
journey
elsewhere
in
India.
The
air
is
ripe
with
a
sense
of
apprehension,
the
occasional
anti-India
sentiment
and
the
tendency
of
Kashmiris
to
call
out
non-natives
or
non-locals.
But
the
beauty
of
the
Himalayas,
the
stunning
visuals
offered
by
Srinagar
in
general,
and
of
those
offered
by
the
Dal
lake
in
particular,
more
than
make
up
for
any
negativity.
Houseboats
on
the
Dal
are
the
obvious
way
to
take
in
the
beauty
of
the
place
and
enjoy
the
unique
option
of
living
on
a
lake
versus
land.
There
is
a
huge
on-lake
market
full
of
trinkets
and
local
attire
that
women
will
happily
fall
for.
The
hospitality
is
warm,
food
is
served
in-house,
and
you
are
'rowed'
to
and
from
these
houseboats
most
often
for
free.
Connectivity
to
land
is
thus,
effortless.
A
long
drive/
street
rims
the
vast
Dal
and
numerous
entry/
exit
points
connect
you
to
a
vast
marketplace
that
offers
leather
jackets,
fur-like
skull
caps
and
other
winter
wear,
dry
fruits
and
nuts,
restaurants
serving
unique
Kashmiri
cuisine
among
others.
A
short
hop
from
the
Dal
is
the
Shankaracharya
temple
that
sits
atop
a
peak.
Trekking
would
be
a
good
challenge
for
the
avid
adventurer;
else,
numerous
taxis
take
one
to
the
top
and
throughout
the
city.
Visit
the
Dal.
There
is
adequate
security
and
the
locals
do
not
want
to
jeopardize
their
tourism
business.
You
will
not
be
disappointed!
