One of the most beautiful places to visit whether it is autumn, winter or summer. Don,t take any eatables with you inside and kindly don,t pollute the forest there Best time to visit is early morning if you want to spot the world famous Hangul or other animals like black bear and leopard,s. Always go in groups and don,t wander alone and try to remain silent if you want to spot wild animals. You can book your tickets online now with a fee of just rs 25 for locals, the camera charges are separate which is 100 Rs

Dachigam National Park is located 22 kilometers from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. It covers an area of 141 km2. The name of the park literally stands for "ten villages" which could be in memory of the ten villages that were relocated for its formation. These ten villages were living in this region before the World War I the beginning of the early 20th century. The main gate entrance is very close to the New Theed general bus stand on the either side of Darul Uloom Kousaria. The park has been a protected area since 1910, first under the care of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir and later under the observation of the concerned government authorities. It was initially created to ensure clean drinking water supply for the city of Srinagar. It was upgraded and declared a National Park in the year 1981. Dachigam National park is located in the Zabarwan Range of the western Himalayas. The variation in altitude is vast, ranging from 5500 ft to 14000 ft above mean sea level. Due to this vast variation, the park is demarcated into an uneven region. The terrain ranges from gently sloping grasslands to sharp rocky outcrops and cliffs. Flora The mountain sides below the tree line are wooded. Most of this coniferous forest consists of broad leaf species. Interspersed between these are alpine pastures, meadows, waterfalls and scrub vegetation with deep gullies, locally known as Nars, running down the mountain face. Most of the grasslands and meadows, except in the harsh winters, are covered with coloured flowers. Located high among its interiors is the Marsar lake from which flows the Dagwan river. This river flows all the way down to, and past, the lower region where it runs along the only proper road in the park and is also known for its fish population, the trout. Fauna The main animal species that Dachigam is known for is the hangul, or the Kashmir stag. Other species include: Musk deer (roose kat) Snow Leopard Himalayan serow[2] Kashmir grey langur Kashmir stag (hangul) Leopard cat (nt) Himalayan black bear (vu) Himalayan brown bear Jackal Hill fox Himalayan weasel Yellow-throated marten Jungle cat Long-tailed marmot Otter[1] Birds Edit Cinnamon sparrow Black bulbul Himalayan monal Golden oriole Minivet Pygmy owlet Woodpecker Babbler Redstart Wagtail Koklass pheasant Chough Orange bullfinch Kashmir flycatcher Tytler's leaf warbler Streaked laughingthrush Himalayan rubythroat Wallcreeper Black-and-yellow grosbeak Himalayan griffon vulture Bearded vulture Red-billed blue magpie Titmouse.

Dachigam National Park is located 22 kilometers from Srinagar, near Harwan sumo stoppage. I am staying there so it's a walkable distance for me. It covers an area of 141 km2. The name of the national park literally stands for "ten villages" which could be in memory of the ten villages that were relocated for its formation. These ten villages were living in this region before the World War I the beginning of the early 20th century. The main attraction of this Nation park is 'Hangul' in kashmiri language which means the antelope. 3 leopards ( 2 male : raja and dhara and 1 female : Rakhi) from the nearby villages are captive where Dhara is a man eater so it's risky to set them on again in the jungle. 2 black bear ( Rosey and Julie) and a brown 🐻 shahib are also captive there. The black bears are rescued when they were 8 months old and now they are of 3 years. It was tried to set them free in the jungle but due to the lack of skill to arrange food and compete with others they wouldn't be able to survive and they came back in the captive. There is trout fisheries farm inside the park. Oak tree are present too which were planted by the Maharaja.

Such a lovely place it is. It is next to Shalimar garden, and it is easily accessible by both private and public transportation. The ticket fee is 24 ₹only, which is quite great especially for a group of children on a school tour. The only issue is that we were told that we could find wild animals in the open area , more further. But it is a restricted area for the public. You could only spot the rescued and animals undergoing containment period. There is no one who is willing to help you there, and you have to explore the limited area on your own. Be careful while roaming....! Otherwise a lovely and beautiful natural habitat. Must go, but if you are planning to see many animals, then you might get disappointed. Trout fishing is the main attraction here.

Dachigam forest reserve had been out of bounds for the general public and was the playing ground of the chosen few since forever. Recently a part of it has been thrown open for the general public and tourists. We had booked our slot (of 4 hours duration) from the wildlife departments website for a nominal fee of Rs.25 per person. Its hardly a half an hour run from Srinagar city. We got a battery run golf cart at a nominal fee of Rs.1200 which included a guide to run it and to talk about the flora and fauna. We paid a visit to the wildlife enclosure where they had kept 3 black bear which had been rescued as cubs and were unable to survive in the wild plus a leopard which had turned maneater and had attacked villagers in Bandipore. There was Dachigam stream running alongside the road and thanks to the 4 days of rains it was in full spate. We were not able to see any major wildlife besides a few monkeys and wild boars but had a nice time gorging on wild plum, mulberry and cherries. The trip was worth it and on the way back we also went to see the rainbow trout breeding ground. There were separate tanks for different stages of trout. A special word of praise for our guide Muzzafar who took special interest to cater to our queries, was knowledgeable about the park and as a bonus turned out to be an expert photographer to boot!

Orginally a hunting ground of Dogra ruler of Kashmir, Dachigam is a wildlife sanctuary that is host to numerous animals and birds many of which are found only in Kashmir ( eg. red hangul). The sanctuary also has enclosures for animals that were rescued from various regions of human-animal or animal-animal conflict like the three tigers and three bears that are frequented by the visitors and tourists in the sanctuary. There is a big trout farm in the perimeter of santuary as well. A walking track within the lush green woods of the park will take you across the park, but be careful about the animals. A safari can be rented for 1200 Rs and is a fun with family.

Visited when in Srinagar. It’s huge and great to walk around and experience nature: We walked randomly and after crossing a bridge over a stream landed up near the bear enclosures .. run by Wildlife SOS The park itself is overlooked by snow clad mountain peaks and makes for a great outing Doesn’t seem to attract many people other than large groups of school children

Took the unpaved track to Level 1 . So many wild fruits and different treas. Should go either early morning or just before dusk to be able to see animals and birds. Don't try to go without the guide and permit. It could be dangerous to do so. Had the stream water at the top. It was so refreshing. Supposed to be medicinal. Just dipping feet in it refreshed me completely. All tiredness was gone. Temperatures were high for the season in Sept , but feet stayed cool after being dipped in stream. Would love to go again, preferably to level 2. If you take the paved road, there is a deer point and a bear point.

Dachigam National Park stands as a testament to the importance of biodiversity conservation in maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems. Its breathtaking landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and crucial role in the preservation of the endangered Hangul make it a treasure worth protecting. With continued efforts in conservation and sustainable practices, we can ensure that Dachigam National Park remains a sanctuary for generations to come.Dachigam National Park, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India, is a remarkable testament to the country's commitment to biodiversity conservation. Covering an area of approximately 141 square kilometers, this protected area is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Named after its two local words, "Dachi," meaning 10, and "Gam," meaning villages, Dachigam National Park holds immense ecological significance and plays a crucial role in preserving the natural heritage of the region. Geographical Features: Nestled in the western Himalayas, Dachigam National Park exhibits a diverse range of topographical features. The park's elevation ranges from 1,700 meters to 4,300 meters, encompassing both alpine meadows and rugged cliffs. The imposing Dachigam Range, with its snow-capped peaks, adds to the park's picturesque setting. The presence of streams and rivers originating from nearby glaciers contributes to the park's rich biodiversity. The region experiences a temperate climate, with cool summers and freezing winters, making it an ideal habitat for a wide variety of species. Flora: Dachigam National Park boasts an incredible variety of flora, with more than 500 species of plants documented within its boundaries. The park is renowned for its dense forests dominated by coniferous species such as pine, oak, and deodar. Rhododendrons, with their vibrant hues, paint the landscape during the bloom season. The park is also known for its extensive grasslands, which provide grazing grounds for various herbivores. Fauna: The fauna of Dachigam National Park is exceptionally diverse and encompasses numerous species that are rare and endangered. The park is famous for its most iconic resident, the Hangul, also known as the Kashmir stag (Cervus canadensis hanglu). With only a few hundred individuals remaining in the wild, Dachigam National Park plays a pivotal role in the conservation of this species. Other mammalian species found in the park include the Himalayan black bear, Himalayan brown bear, musk deer, and leopard. Avifauna: The park is a birdwatcher's paradise, harboring over 150 species of birds. Its diverse range of habitats, from wetlands to high-altitude meadows, attracts a wide variety of avian species. The colorful Monal pheasant, the state bird of Jammu and Kashmir, is a common sight in the park. Other notable bird species include the Himalayan golden eagle, koklass pheasant, and black bulbul. Conservation Efforts: Dachigam National Park was initially established as a game reserve in 1910, aimed at preserving the Hangul population. In 1981, it was designated as a national park to encompass a broader range of biodiversity. The park's conservation efforts include habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, and community engagement. Local communities have been actively involved in conservation through ecotourism initiatives and sustainable livelihood programs, creating a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the park's preservation. Challenges: Despite its protected status, Dachigam National Park faces several challenges to its conservation efforts. Encroachment by human settlements, illegal logging, and poaching pose significant threats to the park's delicate ecosystem. Rapid urbanization and climate change also exacerbate these challenges. Efforts must be made to enhance awareness and enforce strict regulations to mitigate these threats and ensure the long-term survival of the park's biodiversity.

Located 22 Kms from Srinagar in the Zabarwan range of Western Himalayas, on the eastern side of Dal Lake. Name of the park literally mean '10 villages' which were acquired & relocated for developing this National park. Diversified flora with beautiful flowers, lush green meadows, pristine waters of Dagwan river flowing through it and grasslands makes the visit blissful and memorable. Captured animals like leopards, bears and hanguls are kept in the cages and released in the wild

A Place you must visit if you are a Nature Lover. I saw some negative reviews and was not sure if I should go to this place. But trust me this was by far a Very Good experience. Keep your pocket loose and you will get best of the experience here. Staff is extremely courteous and friendly. We got a special attention and an up close and personal view of the rescued Leopard 🐆. To add to that we had a lovely nature walk exploring the part if this huge national park and ate different Berrirs on the way. The only disappointment was that didn't see any other animal than a Leopard. But it's not a zoo.. it's a place where the keep the rescued animals. I'd say.. certainly a must visit place. TIP: Book Online as they don't give offline tickets. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid taking any vehicles inside (although they allow at an extra cost) Enjoy the nature walk

Place Details: Dachigam National Park, located 22 km from Srinagar, is popular as the home of the rare and critically endangered Hangul or Kashmir stag. A former game preserve of the erstwhile Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, the park has been a protected area since 1910. Located among the Himalayan Mountains, the park is spread over 141 sq km. The park was the outcome of the then Jammu and Kashmir Maharaja’s efforts to create a game preserve and catchment area for Harwan reservoir. The reservoir supplied clean drinking water to the city of Srinagar. ALSO READ 10 National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries that every wildlife photography enthusiast must visit! Dachigam literally means ‘ten villages’. As many villages were relocated out of the forest as a part of the efforts to create the game preserve and catchment area. Under orders of the Maharaja, several species of trees, especially those preferred by wildlife were planted and efforts were made to increase the winter fodder available to wild animals. The park is situated at altitudes ranging from 5500 ft to 14,000 ft. Due to the variation in altitudes the park is demarcated into upper and lower regions. The park’s terrain ranges from gently sloping grasslands to cliffs and sharp rocky outcrops. The park boasts of over 500 species of herbs, 50 species of trees and about 20 species of shrubs. Besides Hangul, Dachigam is also famous for its populations of musk deer, leopard, Himalayan Grey Langur, leopard cat, Himalayan Black Bear, yellow-throated marten among others. It’s a paradise for bird watchers. Himalayan monal, golden oriole, pygmy owlet, koklass pheasant, Kashmir flycatcher, Tytler’s leaf warbler, streaked laughingthrush, Himalayan rubythroat and many other species can be found at Dachigam. ALSO SEE 10 endangered animals in India that you should see before they vanish! Dachigam national park is also known for its scenic locales. Flowers and greenery carpet grasslands and meadows except during winter, when the entire forest remains blanketed under snow. The sight of blue poppy blooms covering the grassland is a sight to behold. Wildlife enthusiasts believe that one visit to Dachigam is not enough to enjoy the natural beauty of the forest since the park changes its appearance with the onset of each season. The autumn rutting of Hangul should not be missed. Fierce male competition for mating characterizes the rutting season and the forest echoes with the mating calls of the deer. ALSO SEE 7 Nights and 8 days Jammu and Kashmir itinerary for a vacation in paradise! After Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India, Dachigam was managed by the State Forest Department. Jammu and Kashmir government notified the area as a sanctuary in 1951 and as a national park in 1981. The best way to explore the park is to go for a trek along with a local guide. To enter the park, a special permit from the chief wildlife warden is needed. BEST PLACES TO STAY NEAR DACHIGAM NATIONAL PARK Accommodation options are limited in Dachigam. The Forest Department maintains two rest houses in lower Dachigam. Srinagar, which is 22 km away offers a wide variety in terms of accommodation options.

Calm place with a cool climate. However not really ideal for a safari experience. They just take you out on a golf cart and go for a ride a paved path. Not really what a national park should be about But i found it better than the endless gardens in srinagar. Can visit depending on your interest.
