Carefull ordering medium rare/medium. Not pictured but I also had a medium rare burger that was so raw it was not edible. The burger pictured was asked to be cooked medium and ehhh don’t know if that’s medium. Just adds to the problems with the service. Update since owner reply. Some way to respond to a customer who still gave you 4 stars despite the way you served me a raw burger my last visit. As I said in my review, the burger PICTURED was MEDIUM and it wasn’t too bad. The burger I complained about, which was ordered MEDIUM RARE was RAW. I’ve also been going to your restaurant for over 20 years with my family and despite your bad customer service each time, we still returned because the food is good. But with a reply like that, we won’t return. Not that you care. Edit again: Owner is soy boy who can’t handle negative reviews. New rating: 0/5.

This place is an old school staple for the city and is conveniently close to the Gardens and classic spots on The Hill. Stop in and get an excellent homestyle burger, which are famed to be some of the best in the city! The Mayfair dressing is a thing as well. I enjoyed the decor and ambiance, immensely. Dark, nostalgic and pre retro, this place feels like a time machine. The burger was cooked perfectly, and was a meaty treat! Expect a regular burger bun, tomatoes are never served here, and in our experience, they forgot the lettuce, but were beyond generous with the onions. Sides dont come with the burger. The fried mushrooms were about as good as fried mushrooms get. super crispy and juicy and great with the Mayfair sauce. Aside from our individual server Amy, every staff member we encountered was lovely and kind. I think Amy was having a tough day, but that aside I could have gone without the "Jes** Fu***ing Ch*** she loudly swore at us under her breath as we asked her not to clear our plates and cutlery before we had finished eating. Again, perhaps a bad day, but never OK for a customer facing interaction. I will look forward to returning for the same quality food and atmosphere, and improved customer service. I will adjust my review at that time.

Hidden gem of St. Louis! One of our all time favorite roast beef sandwiches. We ask for Mayfair dressing for dipping. Also, order the fried mushrooms!

I was hoping to get a juicy raw burger. Are the rumors from these reviews true or is my hunger to persist? Not sure how many stars to give yet, however, I'm inclined to see what Doug has to say about this. So -- for now anyway -- I will be giving 3 stars :) Yum Yum here I come!

Their burger is the benchmark for burgers! Meaty, perfectly cooked and a great charbroiled flavor...truly fabulous! A terrific Reuben, though I would have liked a bit more sauerkraut, and roast beef sandwich, too. Their fries are crisp and delicious, and their onion rings are a must-order!

One of the best burgers in St. Louis in my opinion. Great fresh flavorful neat with none of the frills to hide cheap beef most places lean on. Fried mushrooms are also always a treat. The vibe there is fantastic, great old timey pub feel. My only complaint is that I wish they'd bring back the fried pork tenderloin sandwich special.... It was amazing and gigantic, an absolute sensation.

I have loved this place since it was in Gaslight Square. Always great food, Guiness on draft, and plenty of parking. Great fried mushrooms and onion rings.

My burger was ordered medium. It was raw. I didn't know whether to throw it in the trash or take it to the vet to see if they could save the cow. My wife went to O'Connell's today for a work thing and ordered a burger and fries, to go, for me. I was excited because I haven't had an O'Connell's burger in years. They USED to be the "best burgers in St. Louis." Now, I doubt they're even the best on their block.

Our waitress was 10/10 amazing. She treated us super well on my dad’s birthday and made us feel really special with her kindness. Also unbeatable Irish car bombs 💣 Ty ty Oconnells!

Steak was way over cooked. I ordered rare and it came medium. Nearly no pink. Figured they could get a basic steak correct. At least the rest of the food was good. Gave the steak to the dog when got home. He seemed to enjoy it. Service was good.

It has been a few years since I had been to this pub.I fondly remember going here before many a Blues games and enjoying a delicious burger and a few drinks. I love the atmosphere and spent a few hours today in one of the booths catching up with 2 good friends. Of course, we enjoyed burgers and onion rings....the staff and service were fantastic. Cheers to this STL landmark. ..may we live on together!

Food was fresh & delicious. The portions were very generous. Staff was friendly & attentive. I can't wait to go back from what I understand they have just recently added live music but I am not sure when they feature live music

The first thing that confuses or surprises you when you walk into the establishment is the low light. If you're looking for a nice window seat you won't find it here. However with that being said, it's done on purpose, it's a theme. Relax to the low light atmosphere, it takes a moment to adjust. The Ruben sandwich (a Tuesday special) is really good. I liked the sauerkraut, I wasn't overwhelmed (not a fan of sauerkraut in general myself). The Ruben was nicely cooked and juicy. The bread is awesome, highly toasted and combines texture with other soft aspects of the sandwich. I could enjoy a stronger Rye myself but that's my personal preference. Enjoy the subtlety of the atmosphere, there's outdoor dining available with sun. You may have to take your food outside yourself on self-service days. The employees are nice, in particular the waitress was cute and friendly. I enjoyed her company and she always made sure I had water. I shall be back on Fridays for the Fish and Chips special.

Great local pub & restaurant. I happen to wander across, close to the botanical gardens and not too far from The Grove. Great friendly staff with wonderful local recommendations for anyone looking for tourist-free places to eat and drink. I unfortunately wasn’t hungry at the time, but the food looked amazing.

I stopped in alone on a Saturday early evening, the place was busy but I was directed to a booth. The waitress came to ask for my drink order. She delivered my drink order and ask for my food order. I ordered the fish & chips they came to my table with three good size fish portions and fries. The fish was very meaty, the fish was delicious, breading was good, the fish was not greasy at all, tarter sauce was so good. The service was top drawer, the dinner was a good value.

Two words to properly define it: “Old School” A south side institution that has roots all the way back to the 60’s. My family has frequented O’Connell’s since the Gas Light days, and not a lot has changed. Which is a very, very good thing. The burgers are amazing - order them medium or cooler for best effect. If you want an absolute St. Louis experience and to step back in time to the old beer haunts of the south side, with great food and people - this is your spot. Here’s hoping it stays the same for another 50 years.

Great food. Very busy place. Took awhile to get the food but worth the wait. Will definitely go back.

We love O’Connell’s. This is where my wife and I met on our first date, Oct 23rd. The burgers are the best and we always get a side salad and onion rings. It is an awesome tavern environment. But be warned that you can have a wait here. There is a reason for that. Grab a drink at the bar and enjoy the evening.

Nice place. Good service. A bit dark inside, but I assume they wanted to mimic an original pub lighting. You can get a table or sit at the bar. It is good for bigger groups, have tables for 6-10 ppl too.

I used to eat here a lot, but over time the food just seems to have lost its luster. Paper plates, yeech. Anyway, good place for drinks with friends, comfortable decor, and pub fare.

Great burgers, great atmosphere, friendly staff. All the old stuff on the walls, the big chandeliers, the short menu, it's perfect.

Just happened to stumble across this place while visiting the botanical garden. Let me tell you what, I'm glad I did. The food was awesome, and the service was even better. The roast beef sandwich is a must. My wife had the chicken breast sandwich, and she also thought it was great. Went back 2 days later for lunch and had the burger. Great place for sure, and I'm glad I gave it a chance. Will definitely add it to the list of places to eat!!!

Dim lighting and soft music. Some people complain about not being able to see, but I'm not. It's very relaxing to hang out in this antique establishment. the atmosphere is very friendly. Small menu with plenty of great options. I went on a Friday. I ordered the fish and chips. It was odd that I couldn't taste the fish or vinegar no matter how much I splashed on it. I know the burgers are great. It's the kind of place you go to and you know exactly what to expect so leave your snobby attitude at the door and grab a pint

I haven't been to O'Connell since before covid I started going to O'Connell's in 1970 my stepfather was a bartender for Jack Parker and when Jack Parker moved O'Connell's from gaslight square last step father Joe Conroy and Leonard came with him from the old spot you didn't say I've been going there since I was 8 years old and I got the regular roast beef on French bread and fried mushrooms hasn't changed a bit,

Our favorite St. Louis pub! A great ambiance - dimly lit with lots of nice wood tables and lamps. You can get gluten free burgers with no bun (I have celiac and have never had any issues with cross contamination!) Service is quick and the staff is kind. They also have concerts upstairs sometimes. If you are looking for a fun pub with great food, this is your spot!

It's fairly dark inside, but once your eyes adjust, it's fine. I always get the burger with fries and onion rings. I've always enjoyed myself when I've been here. I've tasted some of their food and have liked that too. It's a good place to go.

Excellent hamburgers and fries. Roast beef dip and sliced ham sandwich both great.

I’ve been coming here since the 80’s & have always loved it. Today was not so great. My burger was shaped just like a ball & I asked for medium rare. The burger was cold center so I sent it back for a touch up. It came back without my pickle & onion. The flavor is great but it was sloppy prep. The Mayfair dressing salad was watery, fries were greasy & limp. The fish & chips was good. Server was not very good. Never refilled anything. It was a little disappointing today.

It was very dark on a bright sunny day. Good Irish style decor. Service was a little slow as I went to get up and go to the bar as I didn't think there was table service. I was just having a quick meet-up and beer with friends, so we didn't even look at food. I would give it another try. Almost thought I was in Ireland.

Amazing. Everyone loves O'Connell's. Amazing burgers of course but if you haven't tried their soup you are missing out! They switch it up daily and all fresh, hot and delicious! I had shrimp chowder and big bro had tomato bisque. We were both pleased! David behind the bar is warm and welcoming!

My burger was phenomenal! My daughter loved her grilled cheese. The fries were good, too. Our server is the cause of this review getting 4 stars instead of 5. Even so, we'll be back!
