Nice lodges, nice safaris (Addo and Schotia) and friendly waiters and housekeeping. A dreadful manager though and a strange, 'colonial' atmosphere, with an almost submissive attitude of part of the staff towards their 'superiors'. Payment with creditcard, with a tablet instead of a cartreader, didn't succeed because of poor WiFi. Payment by PIN was no option, was repeatedly mentioned. After struggling for about an hour, trying 3 creditcards, the manager (Archie) popped up and started shouting at us ('I'm the boss'), while staring at one of the children. He suggested that we scammed them and demanded to make copys of the front and back of the 3 creditcards, which we obviously refused, or otherwise he wouldn't let us leave. Finally, after asking again, there turned out to be a card machine and payment succeeded immediatly (probably with some transaction costs for Hitgeheim). A very unpleasent experience. Other visitors had the same experience (Google review 2 months ago), but evidently this hasn't led to a change of procedure; worrying.

Really enjoyed our stay. We stayed three nights, Day 1 we did the safari in Addo and day 2 we did the safari in Scotia, all organised very well by the hotel. Room is big and very clean. balcony is fantastic with great views. Food is unbelievable, staff are so friendly and helpful. Top tip: if you are staying here bring snacks with you, although they have a mini bar and amazing wine on sale, once you get here you are very far away from everything. Wifi is very hit and miss, but that's to be expected as the hotel is so far away from everything. The driveway up is very long but don't let this turn you off, it actually made the place feel very safe.

Thank you to the entire staff who made our stay at this hotel perfect. The food is absolutely excellent and the view incredible! We also went on a tour of Addo with the hotel guide and he took his time to find the elephants...we will definitely return to the hotel. Thanks again!

I can’t say enough about how great our stay is at Hitgeheim. Not only have the staff been super nice and helpful, but they have been accommodating our family dietary needs without skipping a beat; have a super game driver (Saul) who takes you to Addo and knows the ins and outs; the facility is top quality; Cristo and Randel are hands-on and wonderful; Edwin was a great waiter, so friendly and pleasant; and Archie, the owner (wow), has taken such great care of us, with personal attention and welcoming. I actually broke down (tire blew) on the way in, and Archie immediately dispatched a team to fetch us and helped get the car serviced so that my family and I could feel safe, secure, and get right on with our holiday stay. I mean, this is top-notch service, with care, concern, and a smile. Thanks to you all!

We absolutely loved it at Hitgeheim. The entire lodge feels very cozy and homey which made us feel right at home. The rooms are very big with a terrace overlooking the stunning nature of the area. The bathroom hosts and indoor and outdoor shower where you can enjoy the views first thing in the morning. We also did the Addo Park Safari via Hitgeheim and it was great. We would absolutely recommend this over going on our own. The staff is amazing. Super friendly and courteous. The food was delicious. We would definitely recommend this place for a great Safari stay.

On top of the cliffs to Sunday River Valley - Addo countryside. Very helpful staff. They organise whatever you ask. Unfortunately, this place is so far from home that we can't afford to be there more often. We had a full option stay and nothing to complain. Besides, maybe, the weather.

Great view of the valley below. Outdoor shower and well-climatized rooms. Good food. The Lodge beautifully ecapsules the colonial feeling. Visit Addo Elephant Park if you stay here.

Unfortunately the 4.6 score is highly misleading - the hotel is not bad, but definitely not a 4.6, rather a 4-4.2. From all hotels we have been to during a three weeks vacation, this was by far the least good one. The rooms are medium clean, the airconditioning/heating didn’t work, the breakfast was not more than OK, it was cold everywhere (travel in November, yet some sort of heating would have been required), and the hotel is in the middle of nowhere without any option to eat outside instead of in the very average (not even) and still relatively pricy internal restaurant.

Awesome location, have been very flexible in rearranging our reservation due to a flight cancellation. Dinner was awesome (BBQ). We have booked the safari tour on top which was also a great experience and our driver and guide Saul was funny.

Our stay at Hitgeheim was the absolute highlight of our trip through South Africa. The location is absolutely beautiful, set against a hill with fantastic views. We had a beautiful suite with private pool and would have liked to stay there for a week. Unfortunately, we had only booked 2 nights, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The suite was also really nice and fully equipped. We took advantage of the opportunity Hitgeheim offered to do a safari through Addo. Again, unforgettable. The guide was incredibly enthusiastic and had so much knowledge. He managed to find 4 of the big 5, a top achievement. Furthermore, the food was also delicious. We had breakfast and dinner and it was of excellent quality. Really above expectations. Tip: order the croissant with scrambled eggs and salmon, or the poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce! Finally, a big compliment to Martha. We were received incredibly warmly by her, nothing was too much trouble and she was fantastic with our daughter.

We had an exquisit and excellent stay at Hitgeheim. Service and hospitality are great. The lodge is located on top of a hill in the middle of the vast citrus plantations near the Addo Elephant National Park. The park is a 25 minute drive away. Accomodation was spacious and did not let anything missing. We treated ourselves with two excellent dinners and enjoyed the view and serenity of this remarkable place. The staff was awesome and I want to thank especially Christo and Edwyn for their great hospitality. To mention is that there is some gravel to pass to get there. A 4-by-4 might not be really necessary but certainly helps.

My husband and I celebrated our 1st anniversary at Hitgeheim Country Lodge, and what an incredible experience. Hitgeheim is the most beautiful eco-reserve, which is only minutes away from the Addo Elephant National Park. Our luxury chalet was stylishly furnished and came with its own private wooden deck and outdoor shower, that looked out onto the citrus orchards and countryside. We were able to explore the property, enjoy a candle-lit dinner, as well as breakfast out on the deck, and simply take in the beautiful scenery around us. Definitely worth the visit.

A beautiful place to get away. Friendly Staff and lodge is beautiful. Definitely a return visit. But would like to recommend some changes to the menu especially Breakfast, 3 items to chose from became a bit boring after 2 days, Some supper meals were sumptuous, but also a bit boring after 2 nights, cold soup always served as a starter. Chicken Breasts would also have been tastier if they were tenderised. Overall a pleasant stay.

Absolutely amazing weekend away. The rooms are luxurious and will meet your every need. From the outside shower to the curtained bed overlooking a breathtaking view, you feel pampered the moment you step into the room. Our dinner was delicious and the waiters were so friendly and helpful. Archie and his team will make sure you have an amazing stay. Definitely a huge recommendation from me!
