Just like quick bite, thus place is an attraction for quick tour. If you are freely roaming around, you can go there for 30 min break and can have a royal view.

Surul is a small village which is just around 5 kilometres away from Bolpur, Shantiniketan. Surul houses an over 250-year old Rajbari with a couple of terracotta temples in its vicinity that will transport you back in time. This Rajbari, popularly known as Surul Rajbari belongs to the Sarkar family of Surul. It was built around 1750 by this businessman named Srinivas Sarkar, who apparently made a lot of money by selling sails for ships that sailed from the Saheb Ghat port in Illambazar. It also boasts of several dilapidated but unique temples with a lot of intricate terracotta carvings. The 19th century panch ratna Lakshmi Janardhan Temple has three arches with the central arch depicting a war scene between Ram and Ravan while the two remaining arches depict the former's coronation ceremony and the latter's meeting with his generals. The twin temples made in the rekha-deul style dedicated to Lord Shiva with terracotta panels are also worth a visit. The rajbari is also famous for its Durga Puja celebrations that have been consistently happening since over 250 years?! Yes. It was started by Srinivas himself and the tradition is followed even today, albeit without the old pomp and show. The rajbari is decorated with lights. Several local artistes perform here as well. The immersion also sees a huge gathering each year. You can still see a Palki (palanquin) from those days preserved at the entrance.

I visited this place long back in 2014-15. The temples were well preserved & they did not cover the whole structure with whitewash at that time. This time I found that the temples are whitewashed unscientifically & it will ultimately affect the structures in the long term. The place was extremely crowded during durga puja. However it is worth a visit, just to have a feel of the grand structure & ambience.

We visited during a weekend trip to Shantiniketan. From Shonibarer Haat, a Toto charged Rs.300 for to and fro. The approach to the Barabari is narrow, but easily accessible to even larger cars. No entry fee was charged. There was no guide available who could narrate the history of the place. We visited two distinct sections - one is Natmandir and another is a set of of 4 temples adjacent to the earlier section. We also saw the Durga idol in making here; however, access is restricted and visitors cannot go near to have a closer look. The temples have few fine pieces of terracotta work on their walls. Overall, a enjoyable 30 minute trip to this place.

A nice place to visit, an old zamindar house which has temples beside it and a big concrete lawn beside it where durga puja is conducted. No ticket is required to visit this place as per the time i visited the place, a brief parking space is there beside it.

We love to see the old places like this, the members of the Raj family still lives in other part of this mansion. The part open for the viewers is well maintained and clean. The Natmandir has Ma Durga's idol being worshipped every year. I the other part their has pretty historical emblem still now and that has been painted few months back. You will love to see the history described with small idols. The war of Rama and Ravana also described in such a way everyone should like that. I enjoyed that and strongly recommend you to visit this Surul Rajbari in your Santiniketan trip.

This place has my heart❤️ Neat and clean, well maintained rajbari.. I would highly suggests its landlord - to make it a heritage staying option and also to open it for wedding ceremonies. Must visit for everyone who loves to get in touch with old era and legacy of heritage.

A well maintained rajbari near Shantiniketan. It's actually a Zamindar Bari. Around 1782,local zaminder of Surul area Bharat Chandra Sarkar established business connections with East India Company. And, he made enormous wealth. He started this Durga Puja as well as this place. Amazing huge & aesthetic architecture, well maintained. The lampshades here is a must watch. Royal view guaranteed 👌 Go there for 30 min & it's enough for the royal experience. Take some beautiful snaps and enjoy leisure time. The people are very friendly in here. Best time to go- during October to November(during Durga puja). You can taste the original flavour of traditional durga puja here. Add Surul Barabari and Chotobari in your Shantiniketan trip list. It's a beautiful place. ❤️ #highlyrecommended

An excellent historical place...many people say it's a 'RAJBARI' but it's actually temple based 'JAMIDAR BARI'. If we come at this place during DURGA PUJA we will get the actual taste of this place.

Niyogi Photo Source: MusafirJunction Sarkar Rajbari, Santiniketan SEE ON MAP What Makes It Awesome Did you know there’s an over 290-year-old rajbari surrounded by stunning terracotta temples in a small village in Shantiniketan? Yes! Surul (previously known as Surulia), a village located a few kilometres away from Bolpur station, houses the Sarkar Bari built in the 1750s. The Surul Sarkar Bari still remains in terrific condition despite being almost three centuries old! It was built by a businessman named Srinivas Sarkar, the great great grandson of Bharatchandra Sarkar (the first person who migrated to Surul village and settled there). Srinivas apparently made a lot of money by selling sails for ships that sailed from the Saheb Ghat port in Illambazar. It also boasts of several dilapidated but unique temples with a lot of intricate terracotta carvings. The twin temples made in the rekha-deul style dedicated to Lord Shiva with terracotta panels are also worth a visit. We would also recommend visiting a couple of other temples built by Srinivas Sarkar. One is an aatchala showing an eroded Lord Jagannath's rath in terracotta. The other is a rekha-deul style temple depicting Shiva playing the tanpura. There are figures of other gods and goddesses as well. Watch out for the terracotta carvings depicting Goddess Durga with her family and women in European dresses. Info credit: Google

It's a private property and visitors are not allowed inside the palace. You can only visit natmandir and a durga mandir out side rajbari.

Quiet, serene and out of a history book. This almost palatial structure belonged to an erstwhile rich bengali merchant. The property is now often used as a film and TV shooting spot. Caution: you must not expect lot from this place and can spend a maximum of 30 minutes here. There is also a small but beautiful Shiva temple next to this structure

In our Shantiniketon tour we visited Surul Rajbari or Surul Sarkarbari. Surul, located a few kilometres away from Bolpur station, houses the Sarkar Rajbari built in the 1750s. The rajbari still remains in a terrific condition despite being almost three centuries old! It was built by this businessman named Srinivas Sarkar, who apparently made a lot of money by selling sails for ships that sailed from the Saheb Ghat port in Illambazar. Surul Rajbari also popularly called the Surul Sarkarbari in Bolpur Santiniketan. The mansion is a two storied pillared structure. The facade has a beautiful veranda above the main entrance. There is an arch gate at the entrance. The magnificent building is white in colour and some portions are highlighted with orange and golden. Doors and window are painted with green colour. The entrance leads to open to sky thakur-dalan or courtyard. At the center of the courtyard, there is Nat-Mandir. The courtyard is very large and is surrounded by verandas. Surul Rajbari is a must visit spot in Shantiniketan.

Nothing much to see here... Just an old historic zamindar house...It would have been awesome to see some old memorabilia and some related historic info/notes. It helps the visitors to relate things. Maybe a small museum or something similar would make it awesome.

Amazing old and huge architecture, well maintained. Surely add a visit to Surul Barabari and Chotobari in your Shantiniketan/Bolpur trip list. Durga Puja is still celebrated here.

  • 5/5 Bubai S. 1 year ago on Google
It's very nice place to spend time with friends and family in weekend. No need to book earlier, no need of ticket . There is no washroom or toilet. There is no much things to visit. It's basically a Durga mandir which is very likely a old style Jamidar bari. Durga Puja is very famous here. There is family of the heir of the Jamidar. The road is not so wide but it's ok to go with a four wheeler. By Wheelchair its not accessible.
