Nestled within the embrace of SSANParks - Table Mountain National Park the Tokai Picnic Area beckons with its enchanting allure. Once a year, my wife’s Kung Fu year-end function transforms this picturesque location into a hub of celebration, and naturally, we immerse ourselves in the festivities. Yet, amidst the joyous atmosphere, we seize the perfect chance for a timeless adventure in classic forest birding. This year’s rendezvous with Tokai proved to be particularly extraordinary, revealing a splendid array of Forest Birds that added a touch of magic to the surroundings. Among the highlights of our excursion were the unforgettable encounters with the elusive Lesser Honeyguide, providing us with some of the most remarkable moments in our birding journey. So close to an urban area, yet you can imagine getting lost in this delightful wilderness. Walking trails are clearly marked and people are generally friendly and respectful. The the 4km perimeter is ideal for walkers and runners who want to improve their times. In the minus column, people don't always have control of their non-leashed dogs and the cyclists can sometimes catch you by surprise as they race along the paths. There has also been terrible crime in the park, so be vigilant. No public toilets

This is a wonderful place for all nature-, dog- and fresh air lovers. There are running/biking trails for the more energetic but they are also available to hikers and walkers. It is open to the general public but that brings its own challenges in terms of safety and security, so visitors are strongly advised to go in groups and be prepared for potential incidents. The terrain is fairly flat but undulating and, again, visitors are advised to dress appropriately and take a camera to keep records and memories of their time there. Trails run through open as well as forested areas and photo opportunities abound! Well worth a visit!

Our own small little Nature Reserve on our door step in Brackenfell. It is not huge, but a little spot to have a picnic and just enjoy nature. There is a couple of security guards around so felt fairly safe. The walkway inside the park is not very long and also not very hard to walk. Overall a good little spot to come and unwind.

Great place to still walk in an open space. Shame it’s going to lose all its trees one day as it’s actually forestry :(

Beautiful forest to walk dogs - so many well behaved friendly dogs to meet. There are sometimes horses so be mindful if your dogs aren’t trained, there’s also some water stops for quick swims.

Nice place for walks and quiet picnic. Not a big park but you can catch a glimpse at flowers and resident peacocks. They occasionally have a fair with traditional dancing and food.

Bruh Tokai forest is the best!!!! All I ask for is for the dog walkers to stop being so immature and pick up after your dog. Gross!

Great place for leisure walk in the forest or jogging frequently visited by horse riders from surrounding farms. I love fly in the open fields so you might even catch me out there if you ever visit. 😏

A bit of nature, surrounded by neighborhoods. A circular walk of about 2km with little walkways off the path to explore, with picnic spots, nature garden , playpark and a cannon to visit for a bit of history. Moles have damaged the walkway through the natures garden, making it less accessible to wheelchairs

It still has a long way to go to be restored from a dumpsite to natural fynbos but well done for the process

  • 4/5 Nicky P. 4 years ago on Google
It is a mild hike. I would suggest this reserve for nature lovers. There is also a quaint picnic spot with an amazing view. Also if you just want to up your fitness level, take a mild run twice around...security is present so it is safe. Sadly no dogs are allowed.

Historical piece of nature in the city

  • 4/5 Nico B. 3 years ago on Google
I think that this is a wonderful place to calmly stroll around when one needs to calm down or just "break away" from the city life whilst remaining in the city. It is peaceful, has a lovely footpath, and caters for both the jogger and the person who just wants to take a scenic walk. Granted, there is mainly bush, and some people may find it boring, but one must remember that this is a piece of land that is valued not for being a "variety nature garden", but for being a place to break away and see not only what the area looked like not so long ago, but also see the natural life that this area has been blessed with...
