A really fabulous museum of Art. It has a wonderful collection going back to the renaissance and right up to the present day. It is presented in three different buildings, two linked and one a short distance away. All the famous artists are represented (Monet, Picasso, Mondrian, Rothko, Gauguin…). There are great shops and a lovely cafe in the court of the main building. There are far fewer people than in equivalent museums in London or Paris. We got in for free with our Swiss Rail Passes.

An institution with a great history and an attachment to the city of Basel. Here you will find a fabulous collection in the main building as well as more recent works in the annex built a few years ago. The entrance can be made by the new or the old building and are connected between them thanks to a tunnel always invested by different works in the follow of the various exhibitions. One will appreciate here as much the quantity of art present as by the architecture of the buildings. A great place of life and culture for the city.

Very big and spacious museum that had a really great exhibition focusing on Picasso and how his works had been influenced by El Greco - so the museum showed several stunning pieces. And put together in such a way that you could really see the inspiration in the works. The regular collection was also very nice but the building was a little hard to navigate for me so I'd recommend you to grab a layout map so you don't have to backtrack to make sure you didn't miss anything.

A place to visit several times, not just in one day. In each floor, every period has so many artists and so many rooms that you really need time to enjoy these pieces of art works. For me it was a great experience and would like to go back. The staff is helpful and pozitive. As a guest in every hotel you get half price in each museum and public transportation for free. Enjoy Switzerland!

The museum provides interesting pieces both for classical art enjoyers and modern art. I was lucky to see the Cuno Amiet exhibition!

Very nice staff and huge museum for very cheap. My fee was only CHF8 and you have multiple discounts depending on age. There are multiple exhibitions and countless rooms, each with its own story. Also, they currently have a Picasso on display! Absolutely amazing place - definitely a must see in Basel.

Beautiful museum to visit and and you can spend hours looking at the art pieces around. In fact if you come in the hour before closing the entry might actually be free.

Every first Sunday of the month, the entrance is free and special exposition is additionally paid but with a discount on this day. Also, there are family days with a lot of children and painting/artistic activities. The permanent exposition is wonderful and it was a truly amazing experience. I won't post spoilers:)

One of my favourite museums in Europe. You have collections from 15th to 19th century and after 1950. It’s a joy for your eyes and your soul. They opened as well a building annex on contemporary and modern art. Every time I enter this place is a pleasure. 🙏 Enjoy

The Kunstmuseum hosts a world class collection and exhibitions in three beautiful buildings, with the contemporary art wing being a short walk east along the Rhine It is very proud of its long association with Jasper Johns and Joseph Beuys, who both feature heavily in the modern collection. It also has a huge number of Hans Holbein works which are very interesting to see all together. You need to pay more for special exhibitions. The ticket is rather expensive compared to world class institutions in other countries. You do have access to all three Kunstmuseum sites, but there is way too much art to see to get through it all in one day. But you can get 50% off with a Basel card which is given to tourists who pay the city tax. They have lockers for storing your coats and bags in which are free. The Bistro serves very nice food including good vegetarian offerings.

By far, the best art pieces of the Neubau are either anonymous, such as the fine and intricate texture covering a door seen in the stairway, and a wonderful fresco composed with green tiles seen in the bathroom, and the building itself designed by the tastefully inspired Christ & Gantenbein architects. Most of the rest is, at best, a collection of "things" that will also remind you about what is otherwise carelessly dumped in landfills around the world. If they only knew the value that some pieces of trash can reach in the fertile imagination that some of us have!

The ticket is half priced with Basel Card that was provided by the hotel for every hotel guest. Lockers and toilets are also available at the entrance and every floors. The museum is big, and houses many magnificent art works. There was not much crowd on a Saturday afternoon so it was a great and relaxing experience during the museum tour.

Outstanding collection. A cross section of European and American masters: Picasso, Chagall, Giacometti, Mondrian, Klee, Louise Bourgeois, Liechtenstein, Mark Tobey, Jasper Johns. Don't visit Basel without stopping off here!

Varied selection of artwork with modern, contemporary, impressionist etc. There are 3 sites and therefore many exhibitions and artwork to see. The buildings themselves are also very interesting architecturally.

Such a nice place, cannot miss it if you are in Basel! We’ve been to “Louise Bourgeois x Jenny Holzer” exhibition, something extraordinary! Definitely recommend to see it! 😊

Extensive collection with a number of noteworthy pieces. You can buy a ticket for just the main collection or including the special exhibition. Half price with the Basel Card (2022). It's spread across three buildings so make sure to ask for the complimentary map of the floorplan.

Magnificent museum. There's 3 part. We visit the NEUBAU with the children in 2 hours. They liked it. We will visit the rest of the museum next time. May be too long for one shot. Until September, there's PICASSO and EL GRECO.

I love the art in there, but there is almost no information available about the paintings, comparing to the Dutch museums. I expected a bit of text beside each painting and a more comprehensive description on the audio guide.

This wonderful museum in downtown Basel is worth the trip. Many works over 500 years old, a great selection of Picasso, and other artists. Monet, van gogh, renoir. Some really historic paintings you will only see here.

Very large museum with lots of variety paintings. Found Renoir, Van Gogh and Degas among many others. The museum is so big that I couldn't finish everything in one go. Definetly recommend it. Additionally, you can get 50% off price ticket with the Basel card.

a large museum with three buildings. the first two are connected to the HAUPTBAU and NEUBAU buildings by an underground passage. HAUPTBAU you will find medieval and renaissance works as well as modern art on the floor, there was a lot to see here, you will also find artists and several works such as Van Gogh, Monet and Dalí and others. the second NEUBAU building was a disappointment compared to the first building, there was not much to look at, I went through the modern exhibitions in 10 minutes. Although the staff knew English, I lacked better signs in English. I was here on Sunday over the weekend, it was extremely hot outside. In the vestibule, I drink from the bottle of water I had with me, while I was looking for a passage to the second building, I was warned that I can't drink in the museum, which is of course, I wouldn't even drink at the exhibitions, but after an hour of walking around, it's probably not a problem drink somewhere in the vestibule where there are no paintings except for a few sculptures that I wasn't even near, of course I wouldn't threaten any works of art, I stood two meters from the room with the cabinets😳

Nice modern art museum with a great courtyard that you can walk in and get the feel of the artistic vibe before you go in.

We didn’t bother going to all three buildings, as the art wasn’t what we expected from a fine arts museum. It was nice though, and only 8 CHF for students.

  • 3/5 Joey L. 7 months ago on Google
Wasnt my taste, some of the works were unique but overall there were not that many pieces. Maybe a bit expensive for what they have.

If you love fine art, this is a great experience with many masters works presented.

Very important collection of modern art. As aspecial exhibition I had the privilege of seeing Camille Pizarro The Studio of Modernism. Pizarro (1830-1903) was one of the most important painters of the IXth century, he was friends and worked together with other impressionists like Mary Cassat, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Paul Cesanne, George Seurat, Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. You can see the differences and similarities between their works and how they were experimenting and sharing their talent and experiences in the new impressionist way Enjoy this amazing and beautifully curated exhibition.

You can catch a Federer Express tram to the museum. There's an excellent Bruegel exhibition on now as well as an exhibition on Pissarro. Both are outstanding. Then if you haven't seen enough the permanent collection is one of the best in the world.

Spent a whole day here. Well worth it! Amazing exhibitions. Pissarro exhibition is great with the sound part, quite amusing. Bistro can be busy during lunch hour and we didn’t have lunch there since no seats.

If you love art not only modern art, you need a day for here. Superior collection is here. You must feel something else you’ve ever seen art no matter it’s major or minor, they have very new for you. With Basel Card, you can buy ticket for half price including ticket of the other building 5 minutes by wall from here.

The best fine art museum I have ever been to. The collection here is amazing. I liked so many of the pieces here. It's almost unbelievable that you can see so many famous paintings without being in a large crowd of people.

The art selection in this museum is huge and quite varied, so there's bound to be something for everyone's taste. The Basel Kunstmuseum was definitely a highlight of my trip to Basel!

The new building is like a massive prison, I don't know who designed it. But it's ignoring all its surroundings and the old part of the museum.

The el greco and picasso exhibition was really enjoyable. I would visiting it in a package with Prado museum. Pity it is almost over in Basel. The crisps in the museum shop are delicious.

Good museum to visit in the city. It is very big with nice temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The staff was also very helpful. Very nice if you're interested in art. However, if your time is limited in Basel, I would recommend you skip it.

I would go there for the architecture alone ;-) The museum has a great collection of art including some big names like Picasso, Monet or Chagall. They have free lockers for jackets and backpacks.

Don’t miss Basel Kunstmuseum exhibition on Picasso and the influences he took from El Greco. Really educative side by side comparisons showing the development of Picasso’ unique style. Can be easily done within one to one and a half hour and leaves you time to see other parts of the museum or have a relaxing drink or bite in the museums bistro

A great collection of art from the early age to modern times. Well decorated. Titles are also available in English. Must visit if you love museums and art.

Interesting art gallery that has artwork from Asia and other parts of the world. It is an immersive experience for folks that have not traveled to other regions / countries. The gallery can improve with some contextualization of the artwork to the era / country to help explain what makes it so important.
