Amazing place and worth a visit. The history Sanctuary of Our Lady at Mariastein goes back to the first half of the 14th Century. The story goes that a small boy had fallen from the precipice down into the valley and saved by the virgin. The boy’s mother was tending cattle and sheep. To escape from the heat of the day she and her son took refuge in a cave on the side of the cliff. When she was asleep the boy disappeared. When she awoke she searched around had a premonition that her son had fallen into the valley below. She headed into the valley and there she found him picking flowers for the beautiful woman who had carried him to safety. After falling more than 50m he was unhurt and told his mother that the Lady wished to be venerated in the cave above. According to tradition the cave grotto has been the site of many miraculous events. There are hundreds of placards form the faithful confirming their faith in the Virgin. This is a beautiful peaceful place. Apart from the sacred grotto and its chapels the basilica is absolutely worth a visit it is spectacular. The facade was built between 1830 and 1834 by the Austrian, Jakob Begle. The church itself dates back to 17th Century having been consecrated in 1655. The church was restored between 1930 and 1944 as well as being repainted in the years 1999/2000. Amazing place and worth a visit.

Beautiful monetary! This place has plenty of parkings. I went there a few times already with small kids (1.5yrs and 4yrs) and they also had fun walking around. There is an separate entrance to visit Chapel (half way of underground way) and all the way down is a quiet pray room. Public toilet available. It is small place but very relaxing 1-2hrs visit with small kids.

Mariastein Abbey is a Benedictine Monastery established in the 17th century. Because of the Marian Miracle in the fifteenth century there was a Marian Shrine whose caretakers became the Benedictine Abbey. Thus Gothic Church conducts Organ Concert on holidays, Sundays and Feast days. The beautiful and powerful organ play could be listened to quite often and I had the opportunity to listen yesterday evening. It was such a fantastic experience. The Grotto of Mother Mary created in the caves of the Jura Mountains is most beautiful and prayerworthy. Lots of people visit the place and as thanksgiving place commemorative plaques. Mother Mary bless us with your immaculate and compassionate heart.

A truly beautiful church. Felt a lot of sadness when I saw Jesus in the grotto. This church has a healing vibe, you feel so calm and mindful while there.

Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you. The interior of this church is gorgeous. Visit during a weekday to avoid crowds.

Lovely atmosphere and incredible views from the hills. Nice place for the family ride on weekend.

DON’T LET THE EXTERIOR FOOL YOU. Amazing inside baroque architecture but the main site is the chapel in the grotto. Free big parking a few minutes away.

This is a very beautiful Abbey. As services were in session, I did not wander all through or take photos so I will have to go back.

At first glance Kloster Mariastein looks like a nice place to spend a cozy afternoon with your loved ones... But as soon as my girlfriend and I entered the Grotto something felt off A eerie feeling overcame the both of us as we walked through the halls filled with stone tablets thanking the holy mother of jesus (mary). The further we went the clearer the thumping and chanting sounds of what must have been the souls of forgotten followers of mother mary. But anyways we were scared and left. And DONT! drink the holy water my belly still hurts... PS. dont buy the glow in the dark mary statue. It only glows in the light not in the dark.

Such a beautiful church and the surroundings are also very pretty and peaceful.

Amazing and prayerful church, surprisingly warm temperature inside although it was very 🥶 outside. Only sad thing was the graffitis all over certain statues of the saints ☹️

It's great! The grounds are amazing. There are hiking trails as well. The monastery grotto hewn into rock was very moving. The walls on the way to the grotto are covered with Thanksgiving plaques. There is a shop where the Abby sells home grown veggies and products. It's lovely and worth a visit

A most beautiful complex of several buildings with a pretty road through an orchard leading towards it. You can go inside and look around or sit. Lots of sculptures and detail.

Worth the trip from Basel to here. The bus which takes you from the station to church is not very frequent. So I decided to walk up the steep slopes. Located amidst farms and trees all around. Good shop outside of it. Has a praying room at the basement which you reach through a tunnel.
