Inizialmente dedicata a Pietro e Paolo.

(Translated by Google) The French church of Bern is the oldest preserved in the Swiss capital. It is the temple of the Dominican convent, which was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The brothers preachers arrived in Bern in 1269 and their church was built between approximately 1280 and 1310, being completed in 1318 in a simple Gothic style, typical of mendicant buildings. In its interior the frescoes with which the triumphal arch was decorated-Final Judgment, of 1450- and the "jubé" -of 1495- are conserved. The assumption by Bern of the Protestant Reformation involved the suppression of the Dominican convent in 1527, the church becoming the parish of the French-speaking population of the city in 1627, from which it derives its current name. With the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685 and the consequent departure of the Protestant kingdom from France, the church became a reception center for the Huguenots who took refuge in Bern. At the beginning of the 18th century the western façade was reformed, remaking it in an austere baroque style. The convent buildings were destroyed in the late nineteenth century to build the Bern Theater. In 1981 the important restoration works that have left the temple as it is seen today were undertaken.

(Translated by Google) It's an interesting church! What confused me was a grandstand made of steel! For me it doesn't belong in a church and it ruins the overall impression!

(Translated by Google) The preaching monks in the Order of the Dominicans (Latin Ordo Praedicatorum) built simple hall churches, mostly without a tower, which do little to distract from preaching and prayer. The church later served the fled French Huguenots, hence the name of the French Church. My sketch shows the building ensemble with Zeughaus / Kornhaus.
