Me and a friend visited Diethnes for dinner last night at the recommendation of a friend and I would highly recommend dining here ! Their service is superb, their food is just to die for and the owners deserve your business. I got talking with the owners and the fact their family has owned this restaurant for over 4 decades is a testament to this places food and service I will definitely be coming back and would recommend this restaurant if anyone else is looking for a good Greek restaurant in the CBD! Keep up the great food and experience guys.

Firstly, I looked up their reviews and this place sounded good. We booked and made our way to this little greek basement restaurant. We hadn't had Greek food in a long time so we were looking forward to it. Once we got there and traversed down the stairs into the restaurant, we were met by a middle-aged Greek man who was very pleasant and happy to see us. There were around 30 people in the restaurant and it had a really warm feel to the place. We had our pram so he sat us at a big table away from other people which we thought was nice of him. He was the owner. Once the pleasantries were done, he gave us our menus and we ordered our food. Now, this is where it l went pear-shaped. My partner was not overly hungry so she ordered the half size vegetarian moussaka and the owner was happy to give us the half serve. I ordered the beef moussaka. I also ordered the grilled halloumi as well a greek lager beer. The food came out quick, a little too quick. My meal was quite small and it was warm at best and it came with a side salad which tasted old and had no flavour, the beef moussaka tasted good but would have been better hot. My partner's meal was ok, her salad was a little better. We didn't get our grilled halloumi and had to ask to get it. It tasted good but it's not hard to get it right. We also ordered dessert but it was small and tasted a little old. Overall the food is pricey for what you get. Also, make sure you are clear with what you're ordering. We probably won't be back. But what would I know, I'm just a bearded guy that loves beer

Highly recommended delicious and authentic Greek cuisine that takes me back to my childhood memories of mums home cooking. We got the set menu and all the courses were amazing. The stars of the menu were homestyle moussaka and the mouth watering and juicy lamb. Staff were very friendly and offered great service. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It was a cold Wednesday night when my nephew and I went here. We ordered the Diethnes Special to see if it was the same as when I went here in the 80's. They even served Crown Lager l. The experience was basically exactly the same as it was back in the day. Great to see consistency lives at Diethnes.

Authentic Greek restaurant from the 80’s. The generous serving of fried Calamari was fresh and delicious. Side of hand-cut Chips was great!

A decent restaurant with Greek origins. They were kind and relatively fast in service. The quality of food was really good. The could improve the vibe in terms of background noise with some ambient music and further tables.

Loved the chicken, egg, and lemon (soup of the day) as well as the entree which was pita bread and roe dip. The meats were cooked beautifully from the mains, though the chips could of been more golden and crunchier. Attentive service, lovely atmosphere!

LAST ATE HERE IN 2004, was sensational. Went to eat 3 weeks ago for lunch on a Saturday, it was dreadful. The food was simply re heated that’s all. What happened to this place? Paid $200 for 2 people and used a microwave? Cmon? It’s a joke, the octopus was older than my grandad. Yuk yuk... traditional? Good one mate. Never again.

Home cooked goodness that’s a little pricey. Starting with the positives - this is really good home cooked greek food, don’t expect bells and whistles. We didn’t, and we were very pleasantly surprised. Mousakka never gave us that overly filled feeling with a light béchamel sauce, lamb shoulder was perfectly roasted and tender to the point it peels off. Only complaint was that there needed to be a bit more salt to lift the flavor, more pumpkin instead of potato to complement the savory of the lamb shoulder. No foul here, just good home cooked food, but it is a little pricey for what it is, as mentioned by other reviewers.

Food and wine came out quickly from the kitchen. Food was okay, wasn't too thrilled with the bland salad with no dressing taking up 1/3 of most main dishes. I've had better Greek food experiences elsewhere. While I was having a conversation with my friend, the waiters interrupted us twice to ask whether they could take the plates away even though there was still food. It felt like they were trying to rush us out of the venue.

Hasn't changed over the years. Very reliable Greek restaurant with a great value group banquet. The food was very tasty. Service was also good and we tried some lovely Greek red wine.

Beautiful place. Great service and great food. Really enjoyed everything we had as we come from a place where it's hard to get good Greek food. Stairs entering building are a bit steep. But worth the trip down

Great place. Great staff. Food? Well I have never had a negative food experience for flavour at a Greek establishment! And for the uninitiated, Awesome hidden basement with a seemingly tiny entrance opening to an expansive dining area! Hidden city gem 😁

The food and service was so good that I forgot to take photos. We decided on trying Diethnes after researching places in Sydney for top notch Greek food. What appealed to me the most is that this place has been around for many years, and despite not being the most pretty venue around (i.e., not an instagrammable venue), they have survived the test of time. Diethnes delivered! The atmosphere was great, walking down a stairway revealed a large open dining room scattered with white table cloths and red-upholstered chairs. Service was warm and friendly. We had an unusual cocktail request which was no trouble for the bartender who knew exactly what we were after. I overheard our server talking Greek to the gentlemen at the table next to us which added to the authentic feeling of the place. But where Diethnes comes to life is the food. Genuine Greek cuisine designed for sharing. The roast lamb was served without the bone and was cooked perfectly. Smaller dishes like the saganaki cheese and Taramasalata are a must. Overall I am glad I chose Diethnes over other Greek restaurants in the city. I can see why they have been around for such a long time and I look forward to returning sometime soon.

40 years between visits! We were seated quickly and provided with our drinks while perusing the food menu. The two young male waiters were very impressive. I had a few requests which were accommodated without problem. As I am following a low carb diet I ordered the fried eggplant with tzatziki, and the stuffed zucchini. My partner had the Diethnes special - lamb casserole and cabbage roll. Wow! Genuine home cooked Greek food. Yum. And reasonably priced. We will not wait 40 years until our next visit.

i hadn’t experienced discrimination for a while in Sydney until tonight. A particular waiter and main proprietor were practically ignoring me and another Asian lady in the group. The waiter was literally busy flirting with one of the member of our group and ignoring our requests. So if you are not Asian, the food is good. But if you are Asian, probably look for another place. I will never come back to Diethness ever. Ironically I was the one who suggested the place.

Loved the atmosphere in this place. Reminded me of good old-fashioned restaurants. Food was great too, service top notch.

The food was really delicious and the service was outstanding. I believe the gentleman looking after our tables name was cleo? He was absolutely fantastic. Very happy to see so many of our favourite Greek wines and beers on the menu and my dad even finished his meal and got another serve of one of the starters he had as it was so delicious.

Honestly thought we had walked into an episode of Ramsey Kitchen Nightmares. Food was reheated, not flavourful and definitely not the fresh traditional Greek we were there to have. The restaurant looks tired and the faint smell of sour milk or vomit wafted across us all during the meal. Having been recommended by a friend I will sadly telling her that her fav restaurant in Sydney is a distant memory. Cook the food food fresh, and take us back to a delicious Greek experience…I beg you.

We had a delicious lunch for three people. We did make a reservation - perhaps not needed for a Tuesday as there was a lot of sitting available even for walk-ins. We do recommend this place if you are looking for a Greek cuisine restaurant.
