Great location for convenience and ease of travel but sadly fails on all other points. No information about facilities given at all at check in...just left to find out ourselves...or not. No hand towels or bath mat provided. Room not cleaned in the 3 nights we stayed despite asking and putting sign on door. Coffee, tea, sugar not topped up even once. Coffee cups / glasses not cleaned. No housekeeping. Beds unmade. Reception staff unable to give any directions or information about area and indifferent to our presence. Windows so dirty unable to see out. No safe in rooms. And this is deluxe??!! Very disappointing for price.

Really unfortunate experience with this hotel. My friend and I were originally staying at the sister hotel “The Jensen”, but on our first night there found cockroaches crawling in our bed in the middle of the night. We had been reassured when booking that there was not a pest control issue, however this was obviously not the case. After calling the after hours number, we were then moved into the Hotel Challis next door. While this transfer in accommodation was really appreciated, we still received no apology or refund/reimbursement for our highly inconvenienced first night here. We were continually told that someone from management would ring us to discuss the issues and talk to us, however no one ever called to discuss. Anytime we tried to follow up we were treated with rudeness and disrespect from the staff at Hotel Challis and made to feel belittled. We were then told that the room we were staying in had been booked out and we were going to have to move rooms for the second time, which mean packing and unpacking for our third time in a 4 day period. Upon being relocated to a new room we found cockroaches in this room as well. We then had to spray ourselves for the pests and vacate the premises for 5 hours when we had planned to work from the hotel. This meant bouncing around from cafe to cafe until it was safe to come back. We still felt very uneasy staying in this room and could not wait to leave the next day. Again, we were told my management that someone would call us to follow up, and we received no communication. We finally had to follow up ourselves with the staff and when we explained how unhappy we were they said they would see what could be done. Again we did not hear back and we were forced to follow up ourselves. We ended up getting a refund for 1 night, however due to the continued unpleasant experiences with the cockroaches and staff here at Hotel Challis, the refund was simply not enough to justify what we had been through. I am now leaving this review as a warning to others not to stay at this location unless you want to be mistreated by staff and sleep with cockroaches in your bed, without a care given from the hotel. For a “boutique” 4 star hotel, I was really disappointed. I highly recommend no one waste their money here and choose somewhere else to stay. Wish I could give it 0 stars.

We stayed in deluxe room, it had a tiny bathroom, with very small shower and no room to dry off and change in the bathroom. The room itself was also small with little care to make it pleasant. Sleep was difficult with bright light streaming in through the bottom of the door frame and window frames, and you could hear noise from other travelers and staff. Bring an eye mask and ear plugs if you want to stay for the location.

I wrote this email to the hotel a few weeks ago, reception passed it onto management, but no reply since: Firstly, I wanted to thank the ladies in reception. They are exceptional. Great customer service - flawless. I also absolutely love the area, it was always my dream to live on Challis Ave and I love it. I did have a few difficulties with the rooms. I stayed for three nights, and moved three times … I started in room 213, but after thirty minutes had to move due to the overwhelming mould smell from the bathroom. Then I moved to room 112. But I was woken up at 7am by workmen drilling. Room 311 was very promising. I was still woken up at 8am by hotel renovations, but the main issue, is that the window didn’t lock. It’s quite accessible from the fire escape so I didn’t sleep too well. The cleanliness was also a bit of an issue - eg squashed cockroach left on the wall, dust on curtains.

I’m a business traveller, usually stay in Sydney 5 nights in any given month. My experience at this hotel is disgusting. Firstly on check in, the room was filthy and the towels stained with yellow stains. Then we had to ask the room to be cleaned, which only occurred once over 4 night stay here. The room mini bar fridge is not filled with anything, even a bottle of water. I was happy to let all this slide and just avoid this hotel but on check out, I asked for a late check out and they had the audacity to charge me $25 for the privilege. Please avoid this hotel at all costs.

Great hotel! It’s in the perfect spot and the rooms are always neat and clean. Importantly it’s always well priced and the staff are friendly. They also have a good lobby sitting area you can chill in or work from. Would stay again! 🥇

Really traumatising experience there We were first staying at the sister hotel the Jensen Potts point where we found cockroaches crawling on our pillows at midnight! This is while when I was making the booking I talked with the reception and requested an extra clean room. We were given no apology or refund but were moved to Hotel Challis, this meant packing and unpacking our luggages meaning could only go to bed at 2 am that night... the next day we were not offered any follow ups or acknowledgment of what had happened as if it was our fault.. After 2 days they called us and said we had to move rooms again because they had now given our second room to another guest!!! So again we had to pack and unpack to be moved to another room in Hotel Challis..the hotel manager also normalised the cockroach issue despite hearing how distressed and disgusted we were.. she said cockroaches are just an issue everyone in Potts Point is dealing with which was opposite to what the receptionist had told us earlier that they have never had any cockroaches in their hotels! Anyway we were then moved again to the third room to find coackroaches there at 11 am! Again no apology was offered and we had to just ask for pesticide spray and just spray the whole room and leave so that we didn’t get suffocated All in all really horrible stay for a hotel that calls itself 4 star “boutiques hotel”

The pictures don’t tell the whole story. At arrival of this beautiful building I was quite excited to stay here. That was until I got my hotel room key and went to my room. The room was the smallest I have ever seen. There wasn’t more then half a meter around the bed and the door couldn’t even open fully as the bed is in the way. Neither was there a robe for clothes or a desk. Which was quite annoying as this hotel has no other spots to quietly work from. So had to take my meetings from my bed. Regarding the bed, I’m 6’4 and my feet were hanging about 20cm off the end of it. Otherwise the hotel is nicely located.

Quite and convenient place to stay in SYD . Building itself is so nicely designed, reception and lounge downstairs is great. Receptionist so helpful and kind.

Rooms were very small, but otherwise really nice. Good location, CBD was walkable, staff were friendly. Price was quite affordable. The carpet was a very strange choice. Very pretty exterior, and we had a nice (but again small) room.

By 10pm on a Saturday night, I’ve come to Sydney for a stylish night out in Sydney’s most exclusive suburb and upon entering the lift, the entire floor was filled with green curry vomit. There is no staff on site to clean up and there is no after hours number to contact anyone. One was then left to walk up 4 flights of stairs. I’d never stay at this hotel again, sub standard and unhygienic.

Beautiful cozy rooms, great location and absolutely lovely staff. This was my first solo trip to Sydney which was very daunting but the staff made me feel super welcome (and also complimented my outfits every day :D) would recommend to anyone

Beds very comfy and room clean when we arrived...but stayed for 3 nights and room not cleaned, refreshments not resupplied (the help yourself re supplies were locked away by 9.30) or beds made or changed once despite asking twice and hanging the sign on door. Windows filthy...so dirty we thought it was a cloudy day when in fact it was blue skies! We had to wash own cups up with shampoo! Reception staff could have been friendlier and bothered about their guests. No safe in rooms but that was OK because the staff never came in anyway!! Rather disappointing for my first stay in Sydney...could have done better guys!

the smallest room I have ever stayed in my life. stayed for 3 days and never had room cleaning come in- even though we asked for it multiple times. the walls are like paper, it’s impossible to sleep in this place! you hear the snoring of the guests next room. This place should be called a Hostel or backpackers accommodation. Don’t be fooled by pictures and the interior design in the lobby only. And note it is right next to the school playground so forget about sleeping in the morning.

Location is perfect but should improve housekeeping. Toilet bin was not removed from previous guests. We stayed a total of 4 nights and on the 3rd day we left the sign on for service and they just removed the bins but didn’t make the bed or change towels :(

DO NOT STAY HERE. This hotel is not worth the price, I got the king room with the balcony and overall the room was big but they have some BIG ISSUES with cleaning the rooms! I stayed there for 7 nights and they NEVER not event once cleaned the room, they change towels every other day which is okay and they changed bed linens after our fifth night! But never vacuumed the floor or cleaned the bathroom, NEVER had this service not even at a hostel!!! Location is perfect, cool bars and restaurants all around the area

I loved this quaint, French inspired hotel. Reasonable price for what you get. I stayed in a compact double room which was fine for one person. Nice and clean, comfortable bed and pillows with a touch of class. The foyer and shared lounge area is beautiful and the staff helpful and friendly. I will definitely stay here again.

This is a great little gem in potts point incredibly clean public areas and rooms, sure you have to get in quick and be creative with parking nearby and the rooms are a little small, however the hotel is 2 elderly buildings joined together. Beautiful hotel and perfect for our short stay (3 days)

Queen deluxe room was so small it was literally crazy 🤪. We had taken the $30 upgrade and felt like it was us that had really been taken! Bathroom so small you couldn't dry yourself in it. Noisy setting in general. I don't mind a small room IF l pay the fair price, this was silly. Stay away from room 210!

Exactly what a hotel should be without any hidden fees for stuff you don't need. Close to Kings Cross Train Station. Historic hotel means rooms are small. Service is only 8am to 8 pm.

A “queen” room the size of a shoebox with a beautiful view of a brick wall out of your outside access door and window. The photos used to trap us here were and are amazing but far from what greeted us. Front desk offered No useful help with us expressing our dismay of the quality of size and location of the room. The poor ventilated toilet/shower serves more like a cheap motel than a Boutique Hotel. Got ripped off for the $$$ spent- won’t be returning anytime soon. Stay away

Guess what, you stay in this hotel, I can promise you the worst service ever! No room cleaning, no clean towels nothing. I am not even asking clean linens every day, but common, towels are the bare minimum! I am absolutely fuming, I was just staying for 2 nights, the room was an absolute ripoff. Please avoid this place at all cost, you have so much better options for the same prince. Never to repeat, I should have paid attention to all the reviews, please do not make the same mistake.

Nice little friendly hotel in a great spot, quiet but close to train bus cafes and restaurents. The renovated interiors were great. Free expresso coffee machine in the lounge area. The rooms are clean and the bed and linnen were excellent but the rooms are a bit small. I had very fast wifi in my room.

Great place for a quick convenient stay - rooms were above expectations despite not being the most spacious. After hours check in was very smooth and communicated well to us.

Its awesome. Peaceful, quiet, neat and clean. The area it self is just so serene. We stayed in a King Balcony room and it was the most relaxing experience ever. Had the best anniversary and New years eve at Hotel Challis. Definitely coming back!

This hotel is absolutely amazing! We stayed there during the weekend and it was very relaxing. I really liked the little personal touches and style of the property. It's very close to CBD and the Opera House and Botanical garden. Thanks again for upgrading us to a room with a balcony, it was a blast!

Reasonable price for such a central location, gorgeous building, easy check in after hours, and the most amazing sheets. Only downside is the bed was so small that my feet dangled off the bed. I’m not a particularly tall person either.

Lovely little boutique hotel in a fabulous location for a very reasonable price. My room was on the small side but clean and functional, there is a bright comfortable dining room downstairs equipped with tea and coffee, I used this space to work along with other guests. Staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. I would stay here again, highly recommended - only reason I'm giving four stars not five is the room size!

Such a beautiful newly refurbed boutique hotel - heritage charm and located close to Sydney CBD. Steps away from trendy cafes and restaurants and the staff are very friendly and helpful with anything to help make my stay very enjoyable
