I wish I could rate this 0 stars. PLEASE PLEASE do not go here for sushi. Thought I would give this restaurant a try while I was out in Tac and I’ve never regretted it more. Me and my friend got some rolls and it was not fresh and tasted awful. I only had 2 bites TRYING to like it but I couldn’t. and the sushi gave me and my friend the worst stomach ache. I have worked at a sushi restaurant for over a year in gig harbor and this is absolutely the worst sushi i have ever tried. I have tried store bought sushi that was better than this!!! save your time and find yourself a better sushi place.

We ordered takeout (tempura dragon roll, puyallup roll and a California roll) and it was delicious. Reasonably priced, we will likely be back for more! It seems to be take out only right now. Probably best to call in your order beforehand if you can, but there are benches in the waiting area to sit down at while you wait for your food. Current menu in the pictures:

Tried Gari of Sushi for the first time today, now I know why they say they’re the best in tacoma. Presentation was on point, taste was amazing, great price as well-definitely will be ordering from here again!

This used to be one of my go to sushi places YEARS ago (maybe around 2006 or 2007). And let me say, we do eat sushi quite a bit. My son got gyoza that was not bad. I ordered the salmon avocado roll which was ok but really small and probably not something I'd order again. I also got the crunch eel which also just ok but the best out of the 4 rolls my wife and I ordered. My wife ordered the dynamite roll and the spicy tuna roll. Right off the bat she noticed the tuna was looking way redder than usual and she always gets spicy tuna every time we get sushi. She took a bite and immediately noticed that is tasted fishier than any tuna she's had. I tasted it and it tasted alright at first but the aftertaste had some kind of strong chemical taste to it and the taste stuck in my mouth throughout the whole meal actually kind of causing my stomach to get a little upset. I took a bite of the ginger hoping that would take the taste out of my mouth but it did not. She couldn't even finish her rolls, unfortunately they both had the same tuna on it. She attempted to scrape the tuna of but that did not help. Honestly the worse sushi I've had in a very long time. The workers were nice but I think they were short on staff because it did take a long time to get our food and they now serve everything on Styrofoam plates. I was excited to eat here tonight but unfortunately I'd probably never go back after that experience.

Its takeout only due to covid. But my goodness is it good. Some of the best take out sushi I've ever had and I've had world class take out sushi. They work very fast and it was a pleasure to call and pick up my food. I cant wait to come in for lunch once the pandemic is done!

Lovely restaurant with a magical and quality Japanese authentic chef! :) Truely a diamond in the rough as far as Tacoma and restaurants go! The dinner was a elegant array of different dishes and fish, ask the chef for new things he's really creative and loves to do specialty requests! ;)

My partners family has been coming here for decades, and there is an obvious reason. Hands down the best sushi I've had in the area, with such fantastically nice staff. Same price level as other competitive restaurants in the area (koi, musashi's, etc.) but larger portion size and great quality in cuts. I've done take out a bunch, but the inside is so much nicer than it looks from the outside and the staff makes you feel at home.

*This is not Trappers* This is as close as you will get to authentic sushi without going to Japan or a highend Sushi bar in Seattle area. If you enjoy the real deal and not just rolls covered in sause, this is for you. (Sashimi plate or combo B) If you just want sause and fancy looking food go to the other spot mentioned above. Pricey, but worth the cost. Edit with photos: Spicy Buster, Volcano roll, & Sashimi plate

Best sushi I've ever had. A little pricey, but so worth it. It doesn't look like much from outside but inside is beautiful. The couple who runs the place is so nice. One chef prepares everything and he is a true master of his craft.

Sushi lovers rejoice!! You have to try Gari of Sushi at least once in your life. This place is the absolute best in Tacoma for all things sushi! The owner has won numerous awards throughout his life and has been featured on The News Tribune many times. I've tried many sushi places and, while some are very good, this is THE spot for the very best!! Yes the outside of the building looks antiquated, however, stepping inside, there is a much nicer ambiance with numerous booths and a sitting bar in front of the owner while he prepares his masterpieces. I've tried nearly all the rolls on the menu and everything is delicious. Honestly you can't go wrong choosing anything. Make the time and go to Gari of Sushi on 38th street in Tacoma and you have no regrets!

Got the sushi dog. It's incredibly good. I could eat it at least once a week. I'm not much for critiquing sushi or craving it, but this is much better than something like Trapper's. You will not be disappointed. edited 2 years later. Still great sushi at a very reasonable price. Inside is decent, nothing special. You won't miss out if you order take out.

Only open for dinner now. The service is a bit slow but the prices are the best.

Great sushi, beautiful restaurant, and friendly staff. I was greeted immediately, sat as soon as there was space. The waiter came soon after for my drink order, and shortly after that for my meal order. The dinner came with the miss and salad, and my meal arrived just as I was finishing my soup. The sushi was flavorful and fresh! Be will definitely be coming back.

Ordered over the phone and they made my sushi in a timely matter. Didn’t take long for me to come pick up. If your hungry for sushi then this is the spot to come to. Prices are good for the amount you receive 👍🏽

Hands down the best sushi in Tacoma and the greater surrounding area! It is currently take out only due to Covid precautions BUT there is no lack in quality even out of a styrofoam tray. The chef carefully protects the sushi with foil to ensure no random fish flavor medley. The sad truth is that this is the only sushi joint in Tacoma with quality sushi rice! I refuse to eat any other sushi unless I am in a hurry and gulping miso to pair or drinking copious amounts of beer.

Called and ordered ahead this past Saturday per advice from other reviewers and the food was ready very quickly. Delicious sushi! The Gyoza was very fried, hard and difficult to eat so that was a miss for me but the sushi tasted fresh and the prices were decent.
