本光寺の本堂は、木造建築では飛騨地域で最も大きく、存在感を誇るお寺です。毎年1月15日に行われる飛騨古川の冬の風物詩「三寺まいり」の時にお参りするお寺の一つです。敷地内には、製糸業の盛んな信州に出稼ぎに行ったという多くの飛騨の若い女性たちの姿を描いた小説『あゝ野麦峠』を記念した文学碑も建てられています。
「三寺まいり」は飛騨古川に、200年以上も前から続く独特の伝統風習で親鸞聖人のご恩を偲び、町内の円光寺･真宗寺･「本光寺」を詣でるならわしです｡
その昔､野麦峠を越えて信州へ糸引きの出稼ぎに行った年頃の娘たちが着飾って瀬戸川の川べりを歩いて巡拝し､男女の出逢いが生まれたことから「嫁を見立ての三寺まいり…」と飛騨古川の小唄にも唄われ､「縁結びが叶うおまいり」として知られるようになりました。
