Wonderful place! Worth to visit Definitely! We had a private tour by 4x4 car, roads are not very good. Car rentals in Almaty usually do not rent cars to this national park. I recommend to ask a tour agency with a driver. Slept in a small Village there and had a 2 day tour to Aktau Mountains, Katutau and a dune.

(Translated by Google) An amazing place with many natural masterpieces, such as the Singing Dune and the Cretaceous Mountains, which are breathtaking from a single glance. Before arrival, you need to buy an entrance ticket in the village, because in the park itself tickets are not escorted. And, it is advisable to take a guide with you, maybe the park is huge. The prices are symbolic. It is advisable to allocate two days to the park and go one day to the dune, and the second to the mountains so that there is enough time to walk along them. Otherwise, it will take you a lot of time to get to them: an hour and a half to the dune, as much to the mountains, and as much to return. In addition, in the middle of the road you can call on a 700-year-old willow, where a family lives, who cares for it and can prepare you a delicious lunch if you order on the way to the dune or mountains. ACCESSIBILITY in all these natural places is only by car. You will not find other additional devices or equipment.

Altyn-Emel National Park is a national park in Kazakhstan. It was created in 1996. The park covers about 4,600 km² between the Ili River and the Ak-Tau mountain range, near Lake Kapchagai, and consists mostly of desert and rocky terrain.

Amazing natural park with many different horizon and nature to discover! You do not need a guide to do it and it is very cheap. Everything can be done in one day (if you have a good car and know how to drive😅)

Extremely beautiful and really worth going to. Very exclusive, even though it is mentioned in all travel guides. A mix of Sahara, vulcanic rock formations and colourful mountains. Just go there!

Great park if you want to experience wilderness in Kazakhstan. This time we saw a couple of foxes, some rabbits and some horses. Loved the rock formations. Bring a picnic and relax.

All routes are available for all cars, after the rains the roads are washed out, be careful. For drivers, the main inconvenience is the comb on the road, it is equalized by the grader, but rarely. (Translated by Google) A beautiful place! The road to the Altyn-Emel natural park from Almaty passes through the cities of Kapchagai and Saryozek along the autobahn ~ 170 km. Further through the Altyn-Emel Mountains to the Basshi village ~ 85 km. The journey takes ~ 4 hours. The office of the park is located in the village of Basshi, where you need to issue a pass to visit it. Daily payment: for each person, for a car ride, for the obligatory services of a guide. The huntsman will go in your car and will accompany all the days on the route. Overnight stays in the park are provided near the Aktau mountains, near the cordons near the 700-year-old willow and Oshaktas stones. The roads in the park are unpaved - they were punched by a grader and are accessible even for ordinary cars, but you can move faster in jeeps. A trip to the Altyn-Emel natural park gave me a meeting with gazelles who descended from the mountains to a watering hole near the Ili River. A small herd appeared on the horizon, to which the road went. I drove the car along the dirt road, hoping to get closer to the animals. We were lucky - they ran along the road, and we, having caught up, got the opportunity to admire their impetuous run from close range. Then the huntsman who accompanied us in the car asked us to stop and not chase the herd. We watched them go until they disappeared into the distance. After some time, having set out on the road, we again met a herd of gazelles, which again crossed the road along which we were driving to the Aktau mountains. There was a feeling that animals are playing with us, showing all their beauty and become.

Great place to feel the vibes of Mother Nature and enjoy the beauty and wilderness of Kazakh steppes. If you're lucky, you can watch some rare animal species. The Singing Dune is a must see. At Aktau you can feel what it means to have not a soul around within 80 km area!

The visitor’s centre to the park. 2 main attractions - Singing Dune and the Aktau Mountain, which are each a distance drive away from here. The short walk to the top of the singing dune was moderately challenging, but the rest of the way was easy. The hike at Aktau was also moderate, some parts the path is really loose. Our guide said that it typically takes 3-4hrs depending on which routes you take. We went in June, so it was really hot.

(Translated by Google) Singing sands and Saki mounds in the famous Altyn-Emel nature reserve Altyn-Emel is a national natural park located in the valley of the Ili River in Kazakhstan. The park was founded on April 10, 1996 in order to preserve a unique natural complex, archaeological and historical-cultural monuments, rare and endangered species of plants and animals. On the territory of the park with a total area of 520 thousand hectares one can find various landscapes: mountainous, sandy, desert, gravelly, desert. The flora of the park has about 1800 plant species, among which 21 species are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, about 60 species are rare forms that are found only in the Dzungarian Alatau and in the basin of the Ili River and Lake Balkhash. Of the animals living in the park, 56 species are considered rare, listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, among them argali, kulan, gazelles. The park has many unique natural and historical sites of great importance: the most famous of them is a unique natural phenomenon - the Singing Dune dune, 1.5 km long and 120 m high. The dune has a crescent shape, which makes its beauty unique. When the wind blows from the west, dispersing the sands, it feels like an organ is playing in the heart of the desert. Until now, this phenomenon remains a mystery of nature, but scientists suggest that in dry, hot weather, sand is electrified by friction and creates a certain sound vibration. No one who has ever heard the singing of a dune will ever forget this phenomenon. In addition, the Bes-Shatyr complex of Saki mounds is also located here, which is a historical monument and heritage left by the great nomads of the Central Asian steppes. Grave mounds date from the Early Iron Age (VII-VI century BC). Scientists excavated and studied 31 barrows, one of which is the largest and most well-equipped, it is considered to be “royal”. Among the things found in the graves are gilded horse harnesses, gold jewelry and utensils, weapons and armor, all that, according to the religious beliefs of the ancient nomads, could be useful to a warrior in the afterlife. Tourists can also enjoy the magnificent natural landscapes of the Aktau mountains, which are not without reason called “lunar” because of their unusual coloring. Aktau is a chalk mountain with an age of more than 400 million years, mostly white, but there are also blue and pink, red and green slopes that give the mountains of Aktau a unique alien beauty. Altyn Emel National Park is not only the largest and most famous natural reserve in Kazakhstan, but also a valuable and significant heritage in the culture of the Kazakhs, therefore, in 2002, Kazakhstan nominated Altyn Emel as a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage List. Visited this park in 2017. It's huge, we drove approximately 80 km of dirt road to get to the mountains. You had to get a guide at the entrance back then. Be sure to keep an eye on the guide, our guide tried to steal from us. Nonetheless, the guide was friendly, and even friendlier after a bottle of vodka. It is best to enjoy all this in tranquility, and this is a trip for at least a day to have time to watch a quiet sunset, a mild sunrise and a sultry day. Established in 1996, Altyn Emel is a national park in Kazakhstan that covers around 4,600km: around four times the size of Hong Kong. It’s home to several unique landscapes that include relic forests and majestic dunes. On your journey, you might even spot one of the many hoofed mammals that roam Altyn Emel National Park throughout the year.

Singing dune is a must-see, especially at sunset. I would also recommend going to the white mountains (the further ones, going left from the entrance). The road itself is also a great attraction, you're driving through emptiness with some mountains far away on the horizon. The road to the mountains is worse than to the dune, but in both cases some small 4WD will do without any problem. I wouldn't go there with 2WD, but if you must I guess you can get to the dune, but it won't be very pleasant (road is very bumpy).

Altyn Emel is the jewel of Kazakhstan. It takes quite a while to get there and although they say it’s fine to go with a 2WD car, I would highly recommend a 4WD. You will be on bumpy dirt road for kilometres.

Nice park but very big distances to drive on bad gravel roads beween the sights...it can be done with normal car also up to Alatau but its quite hard...sand dunes are the closest from the village and probablly the most interesting if you never visited sand desert before...the Katutau and Alatau mountains look on photos much more nice then in real...I guess photoshop does its work 😉 Accomodation in Basshy expensive compare to Zharkent...room with breakfast for 2 persons per night 13 000 tenge...no restaurant in the village just 2 shops...

The willow tree is not worth a visit at all. White mountains are amazing, you can park up and go for a walk through them, but road to get there is atrocious (around 70km each way. We were in a 4by4 and nearly turned back). Small entry fee for the park, a few dollars pp.

What a great national park to visit. Singing Dunes, to gorges and mountains. Although you can get around without a four wheel drive, you can do much more if you have one.

👍👍 Sorry for the poor photos, it had been a long morning for us. First, I completely disagree with those that say you *must* have a 4 wheel drive to get there. It's a gravel road the whole way. You can certainly drive on a gravel road in a regular car if you want to, don't let the fact that you don't h...
