500 for a ticket. No wait on weekdays. Most of the text is in local language except few areas. Good to have insight into the history and diaspora of Kazakhstan. Building containing museum is very beautiful itself. 1 hour max

It's the largest and most important museum in Almaty, worth a visit while exploring the city. There are 4 main halls, each with a special focus on one particular aspect of life in Kazakhstan. The museum's building is old and the air conditioning during the summer months may not be sufficient. It would also help if they have boxes in the cloakroom to leave the backpack whole visiting.

The building is impressive and located in a lovely park. The museum itself is okay, there are a few nice objects but nothing that will blow your mind. Mostly recreations rather than actual archeological artifacts. There was a very charming series of dioramas about the various ethnic groups living in Kazakhstan. Go if you have the time, but don’t worry about missing it, if coming here strains your itinerary.

The territory of Kazakhstan has historically been inhabited by nomadic groups and empires. In antiquity, the ancient Iranic nomadic Scythians inhabited the land, and the Achaemenid Persian Empire expanded towards the southern territory of the modern country. Turkic nomads, who trace their ancestry to many Turkic states such as the First Turkic Khaganate and the Second Turkic Khaganate, have inhabited the country from as early as the 6th century. In the 13th century, the territory was subjugated by the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan. In the 15th century, as a result of disintegration of the Golden Horde, the Kazakh Khanate (also known as Cassackia) was established on much of the lands that would later form the territory of modern Kazakhstan. By the 18th century, Kazakh Khanate disintegrated into three jüz which were absorbed and conquered by the Russian Empire; by the mid-19th century, the Russians nominally ruled all of Kazakhstan as part of the Russian Empire and liberated all of the slaves that the Kazakhs had captured in 1859. Following the 1917 Russian Revolution and subsequent outbreak of the Russian Civil War, the territory of Kazakhstan was reorganized several times. In 1936, it was established as the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. Kazakhstan was the last of the Soviet republics to declare independence during the dissolution of the Soviet Union from 1988 to 1991.

(Translated by Google) Huge, several large rooms, not high entrance fees. Starting with dinosaurs and ending with Asiada, etc., everything is there. Stuffed animals, mummies, flowers, fossilized trees and bones of ancient creatures that lived in Kazakhstan are all here. There is a hall with yurts, jewelry, clothes and more. Handsomely. Several floors. Hall 3 is still under reconstruction. You can take photos only in Hall 4 (modern history) and in the lobby. There are souvenir shops inside, but we didn't go in. There is some kind of separate museum inside, did not enter, but the entrance to it is 1000. For comparison, an adult ticket to the Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is only 450 tenge. There are restrooms. There is a dining room inside the building (did not enter, but they say the usual average dining room). Groups of schoolchildren are often brought here. But today we were almost completely alone there and the halls were closing behind us :) I advise both guests and residents to visit.

Unless you speak Russian, this museum is going to leave you with more questions than answers. Nice way to spend 1 hour looking at stuff which you have no idea what it is about. Part ancient Kazakh history, part during WW2. Good thing, it's affordable, 300 tenge locals, 500 for foreign tourist.

It costs 500 tenge (1.25 euro) for a foreigner to visit this museum. It has 7 separate halls and you can visit 4 halls for the base price, other rooms are 1000 tenge each. Out of the 4 rooms we could see, one room was used for president's propaganda. From the room's name it was supposed to be about modern Kazakhstan, but president was in every picture of that room (so roughly couple thousand pictres). There is also very little information in English and not much more of it in Kazakh or Russian. Information is also not very consistent and we did not learn a lot about the Kazakhstan from the museum. It looked more like a storage place for historical items. A guide is available in English, but we did not take one.

Very chaotic both for ticket price and visiting policy. First, entrance fees is 500, there are another 1000 for the anthropology hall and 1000 for another hall that I didn’t enter, another 1300 for the golden hall. So in order to enter all the halls you need to pay 3800. The price is fine, as long as you actually allow people to really see all the artifacts. I was chased out after I entered the hall for less than 30 mins. In the golden hall I argued for a bit and the staff let me finish. Thank you. But in the anthropology hall the staff just turned off the lights and forced me to leave. Never had such experience before in other countries or even in other museums in this country: Astana, Shymkent, etc. nowhere. Also, no photo allowed, even with phone in these two halls. No further comments, if this is the policy I respect. Also there is no good catalog sold there about these spectacular ancient artifacts. The 500 fee could let you in for the rest of the halls, which allowed photos by phone. But you could only enter once. At first I thought the upper level of the archaeological hall was connected to another hall so I went out for lunch and hoping to get there through another path. But it turned out not connected to anything. So by the time I was back and wanted to enter again, the staff wouldn’t let me in because I have already entered it…. Again, never had such problems before anywhere. The ticket chart did not say anything about the entry policy, photo policy (but the staff will remind you and there are signs on the wall) and there is no option for paying extra to take photos like some other comments said. What a nice and friendly museum. I understand very well that this museum is owned by the state and dedicated to the people here, and as a academic and someone very fascinated by the history and culture of this country I had an indeed very unpleasant experience, not very helpful for learning in my opinion. The feelings are subjective but facts are facts. Decide yourself whether you still want to go.

Amazing museum and it has a lot of information and lot of anvient history can be known. The fossils depicted inside the museum are really informative. The Kazakh culture information and depiction is really amazing. I was very amused by the amount of information that was given and the way fossila are preserved.

Fantastic museum with plenty of exhibits across a broad range of subjects. Wonderful architecture in the building design. Well worth taking the time to visit. A mere 500 Tenge entrance fee in 2024. Lots of things to see and you could easily pass a few hours away here if you are interested in history, museums and Kazakhstan. Almaty itself is a wonderful city to visit

Fascinating exhibits from paleotological to cultural helped me understand much more about this fascinating country. The price is very reasonable, not like some countries that charge foreigners much higher prices. Many if the exhibits have explanations in English as well as Russian and Kazakh. There are two small independent gift shops near the front entrance. Rest room facilities and snack bar are available.

Don't forget to pay for additional ticket to get access to the protected room for the museum's gold and jewelry collection. It costs 1300 Tenge on top of the regular entry fee. You can ask for a guide who speaks English and several other languages. No photo and video is allowed in here. There are very interesting and extremly fine handmade gold aertifact and precious stone on display.

I really enjoyed this museum. It had great displays on the history of the country and the local people and the people from around the former Soviet Union that were involuntarily relocated. A great way to spend a few hours. It could use more foreign language accessibility.

My visit to the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan left me utterly mesmerized and deeply appreciative of the rich history and culture preserved within its walls. From the moment I stepped into the museum, I was struck by the stunning architecture that beautifully reflects the essence of Kazakhstan's heritage. Inside, I was greeted by an impressive array of museum pieces that vividly narrate the story of Kazakhstan's past. I was particularly amazed by the meticulously curated exhibits that showcase the traditions, culture, and language of the Kazakh people. It was heartwarming to see how our Kazakh cousins have preserved their identity through the ages and proudly displayed it for the world to admire. The archeology hall was a highlight of my visit, where I was transported through time as I explored prehistoric artifacts and learned about the rise and migration of the Turkic people, culminating in the establishment of the ancestral Kazakh states. It was a fascinating journey that deepened my understanding of Kazakhstan's rich historical tapestry. Upstairs, the artwork on display was simply breathtaking. The way it adorned the walls added another layer of beauty to the museum experience, immersing visitors in the artistic expression of Kazakh culture. While my experience at the museum was overwhelmingly positive, I couldn't help but notice the language barrier for non-Kazakh speakers. While I found it incredibly easy to communicate with the staff in Turkish, English seemed to be lacking. I believe that by implementing English language signage and ensuring that staff members are proficient in English, the museum could attract even more visitors from around the world, enriching their understanding of Kazakhstan's history and culture. In conclusion, my visit to the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan was nothing short of extraordinary. It's a treasure trove of knowledge and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Kazakh people. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to embark on a fascinating journey through time and culture.

Many rooms are closed at this time as the museum is undergoing renovations. The highlight of the museum as I remember it form my childhood was the mammoth skeleton, which at this time was not available to see. The rest of the exhibitions are interesting to see, if you are interested in learning about the history of Kazakhstan from the early ages until today. They have walking tours available upon request in different languages, English included.

(Translated by Google) The museum shows the history of Kazakhstan from the origins of the earth to the present day. It has a lot of potential, but it looks old and run down. By showing the exhibition in chronological order, it makes it much more understandable and more entertaining. However, the posters, in addition to being usually sober and boring (as in almost all museums), many of them are only in Russian and Kazakh. The museum staff do not speak English and do not offer any attention to the visitor, they can even be mistaken for one more piece of the museum. The entrance is cheap (500 tenges, about 90 euro cents), but you cannot pay with a card and they did not have change of 2,000 tg either.

With the formation of the new capital, all the main exhibition material moved there. I remember the exhibits very well. Every year as a child, we went with the class. And even when the museum moved from the Ascension Cathedral to the spacious building, it was very interesting. Now you can just walk when you have free time. From official site: The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the oldest and largest museums not only in Kazakhstan, but also the entire Central Asian region. The collections of the museum include about 300 thousand objects. Currently, the museum has seven main stationary halls. Diverse collection provides a good picture of the paleontological past, of the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary history and cultural tradition of Kazakhstan. The creation of museum collections was initiated in the 30s of the 19th century in Orenburg, at Neplyuev Military School "Museum of the Orenburg region". One of the organizers was a famous linguist, author of "Explanatory Dictionary" Vladimir Dal. In different years the museum collection composed not only the museum collection of the Orenburg region (1924), but also the Zhetysu (Semirechye) Regional Museum (1929) and the National anti-religious museum (1941) which was placed in the building of the Voznesenski Cathedral in Alma-Ata city. This unique architectural complex was built in 1904-1907 and designed by the well-knownVerny architect A.P.Zenkov. In 1944 the museum was assigned to the 1st category and received its present name - the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan. This building was constructed by architects Yu.Ratushnyi, Z.Mustafin and B.Rzagaliyev in 1985. It is considered one of the finest buildings of modern architecture of the Almaty city. The total area of the museum building is 17,557 square meters. Among the exhibits there are unique masterpieces: gold articles which reflect cultural tradition of tribes of early nomads of Kazakhstan. Found during excavations in Zhalauly, Pokrovka, Kargaly villages, Shilikty kurgan; collection of Scythian-Saka bronze boilers and altars (connected with the cult of fire and ancestors, made in the tradition of the animal style of Saks), personal seal of S.Toraigyrov, certificate of merit signed by S. Altynsarin, manuscript of Turagul about the father of Abai, the first issue of "Aikap" magazine, rifle of Imanuly, personal complexes of ShokanValihanov, Zhayu Musa, AmreKashaubayev, Alibi Zhangildin, SakenSeifullin, KulyashBaiseitova and others. Great contribution to the formation of the museum's collection made well-known figures of the Kazakh culture, literature and art, scientists, historians, politicians and public figures. Among them A.Baitursynov, A. Zhirenchin, G. Mustafin, K. Badyrov, A.Margulan and many others. At present, the museum is headed by Nursan Alimbay – a well-known scientist-ethnologist in our country and abroad. He is the author of more than three hundred scientific and popular publications, including monographs on various aspects of traditional culture and ethnography of the Kazakhs, folklore and museology. In recent years, with the support of partners of the museum have been implemented ambitious museum projects - exposition complexes: "Open fund. Archaeological gold of Kazakhstan", "Museum of Anthropology", "Hall of N.G. Khludov". For the first time in the museum practice of Kazakhstan have been implemented the projects on creation of a series of scientific reconstructions of costumes and accessories of ancient archetypes - "Andronovo woman of Bronze Age"; "Kangui woman 1st century BC – 4th century AD"; "Kipchak Warrior IX-XI"; "Huns Warrior 2nd – 3rd century AD"; "Hun warrior 5th– 3rd century BC". Since 2008, in the museum launched its activity the Scientific Library, established on the initiative and with direct participation of Nursan Alimbay. During these years, was introduced the program "Museolog" e-cataloging and certification of fund collections, initiated by UNESCO, which is an innovation in museum practice of Central Asia.

(Translated by Google) Not a bad museum, there is something to see, although there are not many exhibits. I liked it - a schematic representation of a mammoth made of bone fragments, an exposition of space exploration, an exhibition of gifts to the president. Of the minuses - an incomprehensible rule that you have to pay additionally a thousand tenge to the anthropology hall, that is, twice as much as for the entire museum.

(Translated by Google) This is a beautiful stately building with interesting exhibits, but the internal organization and presentation is the most boring and pointless thing I have ever seen. Plus a senseless ban on photos and always commanding employees with their “don't go here! Don't look there! " It is a pity that a place with such a tourist potential is doing everything so that we don’t want to go there (( (Original) Это прекрасное величественное сдание с интересными экспонатами, но внутренняя организация и подача - это самое скучное и бессмысленное, что я когда-либо видела. Туда не смотри!» Очень жаль, что место с таким туристическим потенциалом делаем все, чтобы туда не хотелось идти((

Didn't worth the visit. There were some traditional clothes from the each ethnic in Kazakhstan, and the collections were poorly presented. No English explanation. Not even English brochures at gate. (I asked for it, and they brought me one from somewhere.) The building was huge and the garden was beautiful. They should think about the better usage of this place. (e.g. museum cafes, souvenir shops)

National museum, slightly strange though. There's a hall in the middle where there was a Christmas market in december, surrounded by the museum rooms around. Many of the rooms were closed. The only exhibits I could access were an ethnographic collection, an exhibition on Kazakh independence and a bunch of stuffed animals.

Enormous stylish building with interesting spaces to fill yet it looks like a High school end of the year science-history fair. This Museum is so badly curated !!! The information in English, French or German are whimsical. This Museum is a pale echo to the one in Nursultan (Astana). The reward to go there is located on the 2nd floor with bits and bobs on the Soviet era spacial program and, possibly, one if the 3 Sputnik prototype... no information available!!! The Museum shop is unbelievably lame.

Easy to reach. Cheap entrance fee. You can spend 1-2 hours. Unfourtunetely when I visited, there were a major exhibition organization, but still a good experience if you want to visit something in Almaty.

What a pity I was in Almaty only one day, and it was a day-off for visiting museum, however still can enter the building to say hi to the security guy. Still give this place 5 stars for its location and architecture.

It wasn't to bad but also not really special. I wouldn't recommend to go there when you don't have a real reason and don't have something special what do you want to see there.

It was such a nice place but unfortunately no english or arabic museum guide. But it shows how Kazakh culture is rich with information.

An old museum with displays of Kazakh history. It’s not particularly well organized, and the information placards are seemingly randomly distributed. Not exceedingly English friendly, and services are very basic. I think you can skip it while visiting Almaty in favor of other museums.

A very impressive building with good displays. I am from South Africa and this museum has helped me understand Kazakh culture much better. The lady at the museum shop was very friendly and helpful - and she speaks good English.

An informative museum that isn’t too overwhelming. It was set up very nicely (and easy to follow). The interior is beautiful and the artifacts are very interesting. For a state history museum, this is one of best!

I was pleasantly surprised to find dinosaur fossils displayed. Except for that, the museum gives a good look into culture. It is well organised and fascinating.
