A great display of arts. It's also surprisingly free to visit and experience contemporary arts right in the center of Tamale. What was amazing really, was the artifical army of ants made from scraps and rubbish.

The Savannah Center for Contemporary Art is one of 3 sister institutions developed by the young artist Ibrahim Mahama. SCCA Tamale is a huge edifice, constructed with brick and blends well into its environment. Inside the building, the breathtaking expanse of the exhibition area creates the right atmosphere for appreciating art. the floor to ceiling space and the metal trusses holding the roof are art in itself. Standing at the main entrance, towards your left is a two-storey "mini building". The first floor serves as a Library with someone of rarest books on Art and some donated books from the KNUST Library. The second floor may be developed into a lounge. At the time of visit, September 2021, there was an ongoing exhbition dubbed 'A Diagnosis of Time' concurrently going on in Red Clay Studios and Nkrumah Voli-ni Ghana and the ARoS Arhaus Art Museum, Denmark. I got a tour of the institution and the exhibition by the Artistic Director, Abraham. Abraham is a great guy with a lot of love for his community.

This is a really beautiful gallery and well maintained. The exhibit that was on when we visited was really interesting....They had taken red dirt and brought it to use as the base floor for the particular exhibition that was showing for a few months. I am glad we got a chance to visit this place when we were in Tamale because I was hoping to see art outside of Accra. This gallery is definitely unique and the artists + organizers really put time and a lot of effort into their exhibits and layouts/displays. It's worth a visit if you are in Tamale or travelling in the North part of Ghana.

We arrived at a time when the centre was between exhibitions, so there wasn't much to see. The centre itself seems to be a place where the youth I the area can meet, have access to Internet, learn some skills and network with like minded individuals from all around the world. The center does not seem to be well known by the local community as the hotel and the taxi drivers had trouble locating it. I would advise calling in advance before your visit to avoid disappointment.
