Loved volunteering here - Magali (the founder) is an angel for these animals in need of rehabilitation. The shelter truly cares about the animals first and desperately needs more volunteers to keep them supported towards release back into their natural habitats. Please donate or volunteer if you can! Or tell others so maybe they can. Such a special place - the delicious food made it even better :)

Amazing experience. I can say that Magaly is working with a very tight budget , animals are treated with love and respect. The center was created with the whole purpose of making a rehabilitation process as real as possible. Volunteers from all over the world go to help in the process. It is hard work but fulfilling. Center needs more volunteers and donations . Some of us can go and help. Some can donate and help. Environmental friendly center, trying to help the fauna. Please let's all help. Thank you, Amazon Sheter. Thank you, Magaly, for your love and passion for the animals. Food is delicious. Animals is a great chef.

Volunteering at the Amazon Shelter was a great experience. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Preparing meals and feeding the animals is definitely the best part.

To be a guest volunteer for the shelter has been the proudest, hardest and most fulfilling experience ever. The accommodation is basic, but clean. The food is good and plentiful. The people are wholeheartedly passionate about the mission of the shelter, to rescue, rehabilitate and release animals. Some of what I saw was heartbreaking, how humans destroy the lives of innocent animals for some imagined gain. But to be given the privilege to be able to try to help and support the action needed has been incredible and I would recommend that anyone take the chance to do the same.

This is a great animal shelter that takes in animals that were held hostage by humans and mis-treated (usually pets). They try to rehabilitate them to be released back into the jungle. The woman who runs this place is great, she works with volunteers to get the animals back on normal diets and release them in small groups or families so that they have success in the wild. They have monkeys, parrots, sloths and pumas. Definitely worth a visit if you're in this neck of the woods.

Such an important place to visit so you can learn about how to not vs how to treat animals who belong yo the wild. The owner is so caring and friendly. She just loves what she is doing. It costs 60 soles per person but it's worth every centivo.

(Translated by Google) Located on the 11th km of the Tambopata Corridor, and on the banks of the river of the same name, it is not so easy to get there since not all drivers also know before going for it, call Magali Salinas the owner to make sure that someone will attend you, the entry price is 60 soles to today's date and the roundtrip taxi can cost around 80 soles.

The team here is doing amazing work, and it's clear how much they care for the well being of all of the animals at the shelter. 60 soles per person is a small price to pay to support the health and the future of the animals ☺️ highly recommend visiting here if you have an hour to spare while in Puerto Maldonado. Thank you for having us!

Amazon Shelter is run by a very hardworking team who accept animals that local authorities rescue from the illegal pet trade. They specialize in howler monkeys but will take any animal that local police bring to them. They work hard to release animals as soon as possible, partly because that's their mission and partly because the authorities often bring more animals than they can house. This is a great place to learn about local wildlife and a fantastic place to volunteer. I highly recommend it for a one-hour tour or a one-month volunteer stay. To get there by taxi, find a taxi that knows the Titanic bar & restaurant that's about 10 minutes outside of town. From there, it's only another 5 minutes down the same road to a fork where there's a sign for Amazon Shelter, pointing to the right. From there, in about 5 minutes the road ends at a T and you go left. In less than a minute you'll see the gate on the left. It's a dirt road but most taxis in Puerto Maldonado can get there just fine. I took a motorcycle taxi without any trouble.

My partner and I recently volunteered at the Amazon animal shelter and had an amazing experience! Assisted with preparing food, feeding baby animals which also includes injured ones and help clean up various areas of the centre. Please note the shelter does not receive government funding and relies on volunteers and tourists visiting the centre. If you have some spare time this is a worthy cause to volunteer or pay a visit.

A nice place with a kind ownder, Magaly, who is willing to speak about all the animals she helps and explain their story. The shelter is definitely doing a good thing and they have a lot of work on their hands. There are various types of monkeys and some types of parrots as well as a few other animals. The entrance, however is double the price of the usual entrance to a shelter and also, there is a different fee for Peruvians and different fee for foreigners...

This place is seriously worth a visit. We hired a couple of scooters from the middle of town and rode out on the appalling clay roads. The last bridge was out... not far to walk to the gates. We were guided round and given each monkey or mccaws story and the plans for rehab. This amazing lady is up against it... no funding and very little volunteers during the rainy season. And yet she soldiers on. We wish her all the best.

A great shelter for animals that need a place to recover from mistreatment or any other reasons. The owner is a nice lady that provides you a private 1,5 hour tour around the area. You can tell that she has a close relationship to the animals and that she is very passionate about helping them. For that reason the entrance fee of 60 soles feels well spend, as you are investing in a good thing.

It's amazing to see the selfless work being done here. Magali continues to pour her heart into this space and all of the creatures that find their way here. Wonderful opportunity to learn about the animals of the jungle, how they behave in the wild, why and how captivity makes them unhealthy, human practices that threaten wildlife and their habitats, animal socialization, and so much more. This place gives animals a chance to return to their wild environment.

This really exceeded my expectations! For 80 soles (international price per adult) we got a tour of the facility and met all sorts of native animals that were recovering and recuperating before being released back into the wild. The animals are very healthy and well looked after and it’s clear that this place has a priority on rehabilitation and re-release rather than making any money. Make sure you call ahead before visiting otherwise you can’t access. Highly recommend!

Awesome mission to save the animals .. interesting rescue stories for all .. lots of interaction with monkeys .. good experience. Visit and taxi arranged by Wasai lodge.

Really cool seeing the animals close up, and it seems like they do a great job caring for them. We had a somewhat rushed half hour tour, no English, for 80 soles, plus a 40 sole taxi back to town we were told would cost much less. Cool experience but felt a bit like highway robbery.

Me and my husband spend a day as a volunteers. It was very beautiful and important day for us. We get understanding what is going around here with the nature, Amazon forest and animals. If you would like to do something good this is the right place to go.

A wonderful experience. Sebastian walked us through the sanctuary and told us about all the rescue animals. Very caring workers and volunteers. Wish I had more time on my trip to volunteer. Learned so much about the Howler Monkeys and all the birds. Definitely worth a visit.

A place that should be visited in Puerto Maldonado. In the shelter you can learn about the story of the animals damaged by humans and their rehab. Thanks for the all explications and the wonderful job.

Incredible woman who has dedicated her life to rescuing and releasing these animals when possible. I wish I had more time but we only had a afternoon so we called first on what's app +51 997 223 958 to check it was open and had a tour for about a hour for 80 soles where we learnt some of the animals stories and where they came from. Worth it and every the donation goes towards helping the animals so if you can more is always appreciated.

Lovely shelter and good care taken of the animals! Most of them are rehabilitated and set free again. You are even taken around and the owner will introduce every animal to you and can tell you everything about them. She definitely knows her babies! They live off the donations and entrance fees and it's definitely worth it!

😠 Unfortunately a really sad experience seeing the poor animals in that zoo. I couldn't believe that is legal and isn't controlled by anyone from the government. If anyone could read this and help the animals there, please do!
