Incompetent,
Impatient,
&
Disrespectful
A
relative
had
a
screening
with
Ms.
Arroyo
to
discuss
developmental
delays,
etc.
I
attended
the
screening
to
act
as
an
advocate.
I
am
just
going
to
dive
in.
Keep
in
mind,
this
is
just
a
first
quick
screening
for
referrals,
etc.
We
had
no
idea
who
we
were
meeting.
1.
Ms.
Arroyo
walked
into
the
room
and
did
not
introduce
herself.
We
thought
she
was
a
doctor
but
found
out
later
she
was
an
APRN.
Nothing
wrong
with
that,
but
an
introduction
and
her
specialty
would
have
been
nice.
2.
Ms.
Arroyo
actually
said
the
words,
"Why
are
you
here?"
It
was
not
said
in
a
pleasant
or
inquisitive
tone.
I
saw
my
relative
immediately
get
intimated.
So
far,
this
is
just
poor
manners,
but
it
gets
worse.
3.
As
my
relative
was
speaking
and
trying
to
explain
her
concerns
about
her
child,
Ms.
Arroyo
moved
her
hands
in
a
circular
motion
to
signal,
"hurry
up."
I
was
appalled.
My
relative
became
completely
overwhelmed
and
started
to
stammer.
The
interaction
between
my
relative
and
Ms.
Arroyo
was
going
downhill
fast,
so
I
intervened.
4.
I
described
the
symptoms
and
shared
concerns
from
school.
Ms.
Arroyo
grimaced
and
said,
"I
need
to
know
behaviors."
It
was
like
she
(Arroyo)
couldn't
control
her
contempt.
She
was
condescending
and
demeaning.
5.
I
stopped
and
said,
"This
is
overwhelming
for
the
mom.
If
you
ask
her
specific
questions,
she
can
answer."
Then
mom
immediately
said,
"Yeah,
if
you
can
just
bring
it
down
for
me,
I
can
answer."
The
look
on
Ms.
Arroyo's
face
was
so
discouraging.
She
looked
really
annoyed
and
flustered.
6.
Ms.
Arroyo
walked
over
to
the
child
and
asked
how
old
he
was.
The
child
answered
correctly.
She
then
said,
"Well,
he
can't
be
autistic
because
he
can
look
me
in
the
eye,
so
it
must
be
something
else."
The
look
on
my
face-livid!
I'm
not
even
a
medical
professional,
and
I
know
that
is
one
of
the
first
myths
about
autism.
At
that
moment,
she
represented
herself
as
an
autism
specialist
and
attempted
to
spread
misinformation.
I
was
furious.
Not
only
is
she
extremely
disrespectful
and
condescending,
but
she
is
spreading
myths
about
autism.
This
is
harmful,
toxic,
and
completely
unacceptable.
I
would
never
want
to
see
another
parent
treated
this
way.
I
also
never
want
to
see
a
child
misdiagnosed
because
Ms.
Arroyo
is
spreading
misinformation.
I
did
file
a
complaint
with
the
Office
Manager,
Starling.
He
was
really
good
at
listening
and
acknowledging
my
fury.
I
also
requested
that
Ms.
Arroyo
receive
additional
training,
specifically
autism
myths.
I
also
requested
that
she
review
the
protocols
for
testing
before
diagnosing
(or
ruling
out
a
diagnosis).
It
is
widely
known
that
POC
often
feel
unheard
and
disrespected
when
they
seek
medical
assistance.
The
way
my
relative
was
treated
was
disgusting.
Ms.
Arroyo
not
only
needs
to
do
better,
but
she
also
needs
to
be
properly
educated.
The
first
rule:
DO
NO
HARM!
Ms.
Arroyo
fell
short
of
that
today.
