Even though the place says temporarily closed, Hero is there during the mornings and early afternoons welcoming anyone that wants to try his food or have a cooking class. We were very lucky, he offered to make some custom dishes that were so far the best we have tried in Indonesia, very tasty! You could see he puts a lot of care and passion into his cooking. If you have the chance, stop by, you won’t regret it!!!

Everybody says that they've found the best food on the island, but this was our favourite - with some of the best service. The food here isn't thrown together, there's clearly a lot of thought that's gone into it and on our first visit we found a lot of foodies and restaurant people coming to eat dinner, so we knew that this was a serious operation! It's in the middle of the jungle, so we'd recommend sitting in the middle of the restaurant to stay away from the insects. As for food, you can't go wrong but their signature jamba health drink goes with everything. We'll be trying to recreate it when we go home. Don't miss out!

We took a cooking class from Chef Hero today. He is a great teacher with a lot of fun energy. After he showed us how to create many different sauces, we made our own rice table and had a delicious dinner after the class. Besides, there is a great team working in this warung who takes good care of customers with a smile on their face. We would totally recommend taking the class or just go there for a lunch or diner.

From lunch to dinner. A tip top experience. The food was excellent, really lovely setting in the middle of the island. The staff are so friendly. Had a lovely time and in the evening we did the cooking class with Hero, he gave the class with great enthusiasm and a lot of passion. The man has a big love for cooking and you can tell from the cooking and the way he describes the ingredients. I've been on many cooking courses before and this one belongs to the best. You get to do the fun things and you don't need to peel anything! Have fun at warung Sunny!!

Some friends and I went here for dinner and we had a wonderful experience! The chef came out and talked to our table and made us a custom sauce. We all really enjoyed our food. The burritos were great and the prices were very reasonable. They also are really good about making custom orders if you want to change a dish. The staff was also super friendly and kind! We highly recommend going here!

Wonderful welcome from all at Warung Sunny. We loved this place so much we came 3 nights in a row. The staff are so lovely and attentive. Plus the food is flavoursome and has an authentic twist. Portions are generous and the price is very reasonable. Will miss coming here and chatting to the staff every night.

Amazing food and great service. Soup is on point and the burritos are made in heaven!!! Really lovely people but same as most places try to use smaller notes where possible 💪

Saw the reviews, so thought we'd take a break from fish and try this place. Worth all the hype. Got the beef burrito with sambal and it was incredible. So tasty. Partner got the chicken and it was also amazing. 100% worth wandering into the middle of the island to find this place.

Travelled up north to give this place a try, given its popularity. Unpopular opinion: The food’s alright, nothing impressive. However I must say, food presentation was good. Seemed like some thought went into it. We sat in an outdoor hut and were lucky not to have been eaten alive by mozzies. However there were cats roaming around and we had to call a staff over as they tried multiple times to share our food with us. There wasn’t much people when we went so might’ve been a lull period for them. Ordered Beef rendang, Spiced chicken and Tempe goreng. Sauces on all were really good, but the beef rendang was tough as. Felt like our jaws’ had a good workout. Chicken was good, but its really hard to go wrong with chicken. Tempe was alright too, a lil dry without sauces. Overall, I didn’t think it lived up to its ratings. Maybe cause we had high expectations but have had other warungs that had better food. Probably won’t come back for their food, but more so their cooking classes, that looked cool.

Tempeh starter is delicious and comes with superb sauces. Jamu is a must try, such a healthy beverage, ask for less sugar if you don’t prefer sweet drinks. Atmosphere is also very lovely

I was amazed by the food here, it tasted delicious and I enjoyed every bite of it. I had Ikan Rica Rica and Jamu - highly recommendable!!! The combination of spices was so good! Additionally the staff was very friendly and helpful! Hopefully I’ll come back for a cooking class one day!

Delicious food, fantastic and warm service, very reasonable prices. We had the tacos and fish cakes to start, and the Soto ayam (chicken noodle soup) for main, washed down with a glass of djamu. Delicious!!

Very friendly and welcoming staff. They turned on the bbq just for us and made some absolutely delicious grilled prawns and red snapper. The mie goreng was one of the best we’ve had and they also made an off-menu aubergine dish which was superb. We had a few of their juices which were all incredibly tasty. The hens and roosters running around kept us entertained! Incredible value for money considering the amount of fish we had. Highly recommend a visit if you’re on the island

We had such a fun cooking class with Chef Hero- a truly immersive experience. We went back to basics, and worked up a sweat using a pestle and mortar to create loadsss of variations of "bumbu" = Indonesian ground spice pastes. He literally cooks using a rainbow of veggies, fresh herbs and spices. His passion for cooking is endearing and inspiring. Thank you for kindly accommodating and embracing my non-spicy palate, gluten free and vegan requirements! If you want an authentic Gili Air foodie experience, this class is an absolute must!

(Translated by Google) Food was delicious but slightly more expensive than the average on Gili Air. Lots of mosquitoes in the evening but they provide mosquito repellent, so no problem 😊 Portions were a bit smaller than usual, but with a dessert more than enough. There is a healthy shake with ginger that really tastes very healthy haha 😂 (Original) Essen war lecker aber etwas teurer als der Durchschnitt auf Gili Air.

We did the cooking course with Hero. He's incredibly knowledgeable about global and Indonesian cuisine, humble, helpful, proud and fun. The restaurant is tucked away in the village away from the regular tourist traps. I agree with the other postings, this isn't another Instagram hot-spot, but what you get here is delicious and authentic food, helpful staff and a unique insight into all things Indonesian. Hero, the head chef, recently won an award for his health drink and is considered one of the island's rising stars. He created his business from nothing and thoroughly deserves his success.

This place is amazing. Food is delicious, freshly made and from good ingredients. Try their jamu, healthy drink from turmeric- so good. We tried their food and also went for cooking class. Hero explains everything, answers all the questions and you can see he is really passionate about what he does. He loves trying new things. He loves cooking and working with people. Also his staff is very friendly, plus you can see they all have very good work ethos. It's not another tourist trap but a true Indonesian experience. Help the local business grow and dine there.

Everything about the island is amazing. But this place is great for Indonesians food of you prefer local over avocado and quinoa. The staff is friendly and the food was yummy. I had nasi goreng which was tasty, not too dry and not oily at all. My partner had something else with veggies and rice and was also good, he asked for locally spicy but it wasn’t that spicy.

Wow what a hidden gem!! So worth the walk away main thoroughfare. Absolutely love this little family run Warung. The food is just so tasty, full of flavour, such good value. We loved it so much we went three days in a row and tried something new every night. Simply delicious. We were so sad to say goodbye to the amazingly kind, attentive, warm staff on the last day. Hoping we'll visit again some day in the future.

Wonderful find in still sleepy post-covid Gili Air. Food is really tasty, with quality ingredients, we mopped up our plates on both occasions we dined there. All the best to the friendly and talented Uncle and the whole crew! See you next time!

We went there based on the Google recommendations but I think that they are outdated. I don’t know if the cook has changed or maybe it was a bad day but the food was average. We tried the nasi begibung and it didn’t taste that good. The meat was a bit dry… The service is nice though

  • 5/5 Tobias T. 1 year ago on Google
We came here to do the cooking class. We were the only two people and it was 250k per person. Chef Hero taught us so many things about Indonesian food and we made dishes from so many Indonesian islands and cities: Bali, Lombok, Sumatra, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, etc. You can feel his passion in what he does, and the food tasted amazing! We could've been more included as he helped us do a lot of it but he taught us the basics and did a lot of the hard work himself so that we were able to enjoy more dishes instead of just two or three. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone!

Excellent Balinese food in a cute bamboo cafe. We got the Mie Goreng with egg and tofu and the Gado-Gado. The presentation of the dishes was very stylish, and the food was delicious. We enjoyed the vegetarian option available for almost all the dishes. The lady was very lovely and welcoming. I recommend this place.

Amazing food, have been many times, really good vegan options, though would be good if they were labelled on the menu, the veggie burrito is amazing, just need to ask for no mayo or egg if you're vegan. Also the dumplings are really good! Everything we've ordered has been really tasty.

We visited twice, the first being the best experience. The BBq fish was excellent and the homemade lemonade delicious. The second time we went they were clearly understaffed but instead of focusing on the customers they had in the restaurant they were more interested in getting as many people in as possible. Which resulted in very slow, unattentive and frustrating service.

First day in Gili Air straight from airport. Walked from hotel to try local food. Chose nasi goreng which is Indonesian fried rice with chicken satay and grilled prawn. Happy with my choice. Rustic and great piped music with a local flavor. Loved that song they played 😜

Review is more specific towards a cooking class that we took here. Myself and my partner attended a cooking class with the head chef Hero here and honestly looking back on it, it was dreadful. We've since taken a cooking class in Thailand which was very informative and we actually did 95% of the cooking ourselves. When attending Hero's cooking class he tended to repeat the same information over and over and seemed distracted. When it came to our involvement in the class, all we really did was pound a pestle and mortar for various curry pastes. That was it. Hero really made the dishes himself, throwing a variety of ingredients in without a care or without any real discussion, his seemingly on a whim. It was a stark contrast to the class we took since which allowed us to choose our own 6 dishes from a menu to cook. And the worst of it all? We didn't like the taste of any of the dishes. We struggled through trying to eat them and gave up fairly quickly. Hero is a charasmatic man but unfortunately his cooking class, at least in our experience, was absolutely dreadful.
