St Augustine's Cross

Tourist attraction Historical landmark

👍👍 If you study enough History you will know that by the time St Augustine arrived in the British Isles, Christianity was well stabilished in the land and Augustine's role was to set up Catholicism in this part of the world. But as a landmark, this is a beautiful spot and worth a visit

It's a cross on a field, but hey, you knew this before you arrived so what did you expect!

Worth the stop, interesting piece of history. Seems a bit out of place these days as it is near an over pass and new build housing, which is a bit of a shame, but you get that.

I visited the cross again in September 2021 having been away from the area since 1985 and found that the tranquil area I remembered is now being choaked by development and the quiet country lane is now a busy road. What used to be a special area in the middle of open countryside is now being hemmed in by a by-pass and a collection of newly built houses and industrial buildings. This is another example of how our green and pleasant land is disappearing under a sea of concrete and the climate is getting steaidly warmer as a result.

Highly interesting place for any pilgrim. Although St Augustine's landing site was just a little further down the road. It's definitely worth going down to the sea too, just to get the full experience.

Peaceful place, perfect for a picnic, with a great story attached.

A Victorian memorial cross which supposedly marks the place where the monk Augustine landed from Rome and met with King Ethelberht by an oak tree in AD597. A highly decorated monument which includes carvings of the crucifixion, Virgin and child and the Apostles amongst others. If your in the area well worth a look.

It is well worth a visit, just a pity the litterbugs are up to their usual no-good, leaving the place in a mess

Worth Visiting now! As an explosion of housing development is taking place it will be a concrete JUNGLE that's not including the Railway Station that's not required.

Beautiful historical landmark. Peaceful place. No facilities on site but plenty in nearby towns and villages.

A nice drop by area to acknowledge a Christian monument - where St. Augustine is believed to have had a sermon result in bringing the Christian believes to this island. No tickets, no charge.
