This is a visit I have been wanting to do all my life and today was the day. This was definitely worth going to see and is definitely a Jewell near Margate town centre. A little tricky to find as you don't expect to find it where you do. You must be able to go under ground. Literally thousands of shells in beautiful patterns are fixed to walls of the tunnels. Lovely Museum and she'll shop to buy souvenirs

Such an unique place Shell grotto. It’s not far from the beach, walkable distance. It takes 20 mins to see this whole place which is in underground. The Grotto made by millions of shells. They estimate the grotto to be around 2000 years old. Those who believe the grotto may be very old suspect that it was probably used as a place of ritual worship or a temple. The altar with celestial bodies surrounding it suggests the significance of earth, nature, sky, seasons, and the elements. Worth a visit !!!

Very interesting place to visit. It's on a residential street and doesn't look much from outside but once you walk inside you are straight into the shop then towards the back of the shop is the grotto entrance. Entering the grotto is down a few stairs into a little area giving a bit of info about the grotto, then down another, slightly steeper set of stairs. It's narrow in the grotto but still possible to pass other visitors. It really is a stunning place and you do walk round wandering why and how someone would make such a place.

What an amazing site and sight! If you read the information on the displays you will be thinking, how did any one live long enough to complete such a marvel! It doesn't take me long to complete the tour but it's gotta be a bucket list item.πŸ‘

Very interesting Grotto with unclear history as to who and when it was built. Intricate shell designs on the walls and a shrine. Been to Margate loads of times and have been aware of it for ages but never visited until now. Well worth a visit.

Really impressive shell grotto. It’s quite a bit from the seafront so there aren’t too many people there. There’s a small exhibition explaining all the information about it before you go down and you’re free to spend as much time there as you like. We were there about 30 mins in total. The shop is really good too.

Very cute place! Lovely staff, place takes no more than 30 minutes to complete. They even have a build your own pattern wall of seashells that would be very helpful to engage younger kids. Interesting and unique experience in Margate, definitely worth a visit!

Had a fun and interesting time here. Really mysterious place that no-one really knows it's origins. Definitely worth a visit if you fancy something quirky. Not a huge place but well worth the small admission fee. The staff were friendly and helpful. A nice gift shop by the entrance.

It is like nothing I have seen before. Very unusual manmade cave with its purpose being a mystery to this day. Pay it a visit. Their gift shop is a bonus. It is full of cute things.

Absolutely Amazing! We saw this on Google and HAD to come! The whole place is a cave system covered in many types of shells from a looong time ago. It was really cool learning the history of why it is there and what is was used for. The gift shop has many different items to choose from including shells, gems, toys and more! I would definitely recommend you make time to come see the Shell Grotto!

The Shell Grotto was a very interesting place to visit. It's stunning to see such a unique work of art and its even more amazing to learn about the mysteries that surround it. It's definitely instagrammable. Note though that it's a bit dark inside (perhaps cozy is the right word). So be sure to keep still when taking photos. The dimness though adds a bit of mood to the photos so it's still okay. The place itself is a bit small. If you walk around without paying any much attention to the art, you might finish in less than 5 minutes. But that's not really the point. I think to fully enjoy this place, you actually have to stop and observe the walls, the way each segment is different from the next. I mean the level of patience it took to create this place is just incredible. Imagine making the wall designs out of more than 4 million sea shells! And it's amazing that today, it is still preserved. Side note if you collect postcards: Just outside is a souvenir shop which sells the best postcards we've seen in Margate. For the 4.50 entrance fee, its not a bad place to visit if you have time to spare when visiting Margate.

Absolutely lovely place to visit : the shell designs are really impressive. A little narrow in places, but you can still move without issue. I definitely recommend a visit. The shop and staff are lovely too.

It is WILD that nobody really knows who built this or why. Well worth the Β£4 or whatever entry for a few minutes of wandering round a very shelly tunnel and then looking at loads of shell related tat in the gift shop. Would visit again!

This is a different place to visit and our first and probably our last. You can see all of the this attraction in around 10 minutes to be honest and that includes looking around the gift shop. It's about 15 minutes to walk here from Margate Town centre. Like I said, been here once wouldn't go again.

This place is INCREDIBLE!!!! One of the most interesting and inspiring places I’ve been to in years. As an artist, the patterns and intricate designs were thrilling. And the gift shop is adorable with really reasonable prices!!!

Lovely hidden gem in Margate. Well worth the visit and entrance fee. The grotto is small but such an intriguing and unique place, it really is a must see! The shop is lovely too, lots of lovely quirky things.

Charming experience to be had, has a small but very informative area before entering the grotto. Once inside it is wonderful and really gets the mind churning on how and why it was constructed. Staff are wonderfully friendly and polite, great gift shop too. Highly recommended

An interesting oddity and sits firmly on the fence betwen something genuinely historic and archalogical and something more ethereal. I am a little suspicious of the ceiling as it looks like plaster board. Well worth a visit and try not to be influenced by the gift shop entrance. They have to make some money.

Absolutely fascinating! The grotto itself is beautifully done with an added mystery of its unknown creators. As a bonus, the gift shop's prices are actually affordable. Highly recommended!

Very very inspiring place to be! Amazing this still exists. It has a great story , which is told there. The grotto is inside the shop and the shop sells shells.

Friendly and welcoming staff. Grotto is easy to enter and you are free to walk around and take photos on your own. Lots of pretty features, would have looked stunning years ago being bright and shiny. Large gift shop selling shells of all different sizes, colours and shapes plus other gifts. The loop bus stops at the top of the road.

Very cute little underground cave, fun way to spend a few minutes if your in the area, it's not very big, but is very interesting and there's a nice little shell shop on the ground level. No disabled access down, so had to carry the baby and leave the pram.

I took the kids out for a random exploring day, not knowing where we would end up or what we would end up doing. We came across the shell grotto and thought we would have a look. It was a really good price to get in and the shop wasn't too dear either. We didn't need to wait to get in and it wasn't busy. I have to say it is absolutely amazing! Even the kids said how much they loved the place. Would definitely recommend taking a look.

Very special and interesting tourist attraction in the centre of Margate. This is definitely one of the most amazing sightseeing places I have visited. Located in the centre of town with parking available on lots of streets nearby this is definitely worth visiting if you are in Margate for tourist attractions. Not expensive and you can book on the website and just turn up. Absolutely unbelievable place and it's hard to describe how amazing. Very good information provided and doesn't take long under 30 mins to see it all and explore it properly. I would recommend this if you have time in Margate

Visited with our two young children and it was a great place to go. Well stocked gift shop, good information & history and the tunnels / shells themselves were truly remarkable. The maps doubled up as a children's play / fact sheet and there was a little table with crayons for them to colour whilst the adults could read the information. Walkable from the town centre / sea front, but street parking nearby also.
