The temple is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, along with its sister temples Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavateshwara Temple. The Peruvudaiyar Temple was built entirely from granite and the first all-granite structure in the world. Lord Shiva is present as the ‘Cosmic dancer’, Nataraja. The temple was built by the Tamil King Arulmozhivarman, famously known as Raja Raja Chola I. It was built between 1003 and 1010 A.D. The temple attained its 1000th year in September 2010.

So my experience, my family loved it..I like it too but personally I think it is a bit overrated (I've been here before). They are so many more older and very powerful temples around Kumbakonam and Thanjavur and I would suggest to find and visit them. Thanjai periya kovil is architecturally and historical a must visit place but that's about it. If you've never visited, please do. But try to find other, not so known but famous temples around. A little research is must. My suggestions, suryan Kovil, thirukodikaval, patteswaram, kathiramangalam vana durgai, ask around, you'll find more.

I had the incredible privilege of visiting the magnificent Thanjavur Temple, and it left me awe-struck! This architectural marvel is a testament to the rich heritage and craftsmanship of India. The intricate carvings and towering gopurams are simply breathtaking. The temple's historical significance adds to its charm, making it a must-visit for history buffs and spiritual seekers alike. I was particularly captivated by the Brihadeeshwara Shiva Lingam, a true masterpiece. The serene ambiance inside the temple creates a sense of tranquility that's hard to find elsewhere. Visiting during a traditional ceremony was a memorable experience, and the priest's explanations added depth to my understanding of Hindu culture. The temple's well-maintained grounds and informative signage made my visit comfortable and educational. I would recommend this iconic site to anyone traveling to Thanjavur. It's an architectural gem that should not be missed! #ThanjavurTemple #HistoricalMarvel #SpiritualJourney

First, all Tamilians should take pride in this wonderful temple, a remarkable creation developed by a Tamilian." The Brihadeeshwara Temple, also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple, or Rajarajesvaram, is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. Built by Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century, it's a prime example of Dravidian architecture from the Chola era. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the "Great Living Chola Temples," boasts the tallest vimanam (temple tower) worldwide at 216 ft (66 m), with a Kumbam carved from a single 80-ton rock. The temple's stunning features include a colossal Nandi statue and its construction entirely from granite sourced over 60 km away. As one of Tamil Nadu's top tourist attractions, it's a testament to ancient craftsmanship and cultural significance. A must visit....

Its a single stone built wonder by the great king Raja Raja Cholan. Worth visiting. Atmosphere is too good. In weekends/holidays its crowded. But it’s manageable. Parking is available opposite to the temple. Both 2&4 wheels. 10 rs for 4 wheels. Inside there is a place for chappals on chargeable. Items sold near there are costly.
