Tamil Nadu is a rich field for the ethnological collection, but no systematic field study has yet been taken to preserve the Tamil Culture, which is an urgent need. The implementation of different developmental plans and welfare schemes together with constitutional safeguards and the country’s industrialization, urbanization and improved communication changes in the life style of the various segments of the society have set in from all directions. As a result, folk and tribal culture in Tamil Nadu is undergoing rapid changes at present. Tamil University therefore considered it indispensable to set up a well designed, carefully planned cultural museum that will not be of casual assembly of artifacts, but will provide source material for original research work on various aspects of the Tamil people.

Department of Tamil museum is maintaining this place with various statues and piller carved beautifully. It's not opened on all days. There is restricted timing to visit this museum. Since it's governed by Gov officers, they are strict in managing these whole structure.

This museum showcases Tamil history and culture. The staff (who might be the curator) was very knowledgeable and excited to show us around. Features include musical instruments, folk art, ancient pottery and jewelry fragments, and contemporary art. It was a bit difficult to find. You need to go into an area marked as a women’s college, and then follow the path on the left side. The museum entrance is on the right.

The Tamil University Museum at Thanjavur in the state of Tamil Nadu is an important museum for its storage of the ancient historical objects. It was established in the year 1983 as a multipurpose museum. In addition to these, there are also objects like swan, leather puppets, Rajasthani lamps, musical instruments, ivory inlay, Paleolithic, Neolithic, replica of Yazhappanam seal and pottery pieces. Historians, research scholars and general visitors are welcome to visit the museum between 10:30 am to 01.00 pm and 02:30 pm to 05 pm. Located in Tanjore. Extraordinary place to see how Kings lived a lavish and luxury life. You can find great works of art and a skeleton of a blue whale here.

A classical collection of older era tamil dynasties of Chola and pallava. They have many sculptures and rare metal items. This museum is maintained by Tamilnadu government. You can take photos of the sculptures and items displayed here. Some old coins, issued by the dynasties are also available here.
