One of the most spectacular temples of Southern India. The temple premise is so huge that one should spend time to appreciate its beauty and architecture. The shrine is the largest amongst all the temples of the southern India and houses the largest Shiva linga in India. One must visit this grand temple once in their life time.Truly an architectural wonder! 2 eyes won't be enough to admire the temple's beauty! The level of minute detailing with perfection in each and every frame gives such an artistic view. Worthy to spend a few hours in this place alone. The best time to visit would be the evening slot, around 4:30pm when the temple glows in natural light and as evening dawns, by 6pm, the lights are on and it glows further exhibiting its magnificence. Spend a lot of time to view and admire the detailing in the main temple, both inside and out. Neatly maintained premises. A must visit for everyone and can be visited any number of times! Opening time all days from 0500 hrs to 1200 hrs . In evening 1600 hrs to 2100 hrs. No entry Fee. Parking Available outside for all after paid

Visited Dec 2023 on the full moon . While not surprised by the general crowds , given it is the holiday season - I was definitely taken aback by the number of “devotees” and lines to see the Main deity . The pilgrimage season certainly contributed to the rush . Spent about 3 hours in the evening but had to be patient to get good photos as we waited and waxed through crowds . Fantastic place and each visit makes you see the place in new light . It is a pride for Indian architecture and I hope it continues to be maintained well ( don’t know why Prasadam has to be sold inside the main complex ) . Look forward to coming back in a few years - but will try to time the visit appropriately.

Hello Everyone,The Brihadeshwara temple is also called the big temple in Tanjavur. It is easy to reach her with your own vehicle as well as by public transport. In case you have come here in your own vehicle you have a big parking opposite to the main entrance of the temple. The ambitious temple by Rajaraja – I begin in 1003 and completed in 1010 CE and was designed to represent a cosmic structure the Mahameru. The temple was built in the courtyard 240 by 120 meters in the ratio of 1:2 with granite block brought from distance of approximately 50 kilometers. The Shikhar is at a height of 60 meters and weighs 81 tons. Some of the must things to see here is the beautifully decorated entrance doors, the big nandi, for those who understand Tamil the backside of the temple gives a big script of how the financials of the temple were managed about the revenue and the expenditure. also visit or temple on the right side which has beautiful Shivlinga and Parvati. The total time spent year could be approximately one hour 30 minutes. You need to wear traditional Indian dress to visit the temple. The premises has clean toilets which are available on right side the temple complex. Drinking water needs to be carried on your own. Cloak Room not available. As you enter this majestic temple, you will be mesmerised by the enormity and grandeur of this architecture. It makes you wonder the kind of skills and expertise that we possessed centuries ago. It also makes you wonder how can our rich heritage be so neglected in the modern world. It also makes you wonder how can a structure that is tilt be called as one of the wonders of the world and this magnificent architecture unknown to the world.

Magnificent and amazing temple structure. Historical monument and a UNESCO world heritage site. The sheer magnitude and scale is breathtaking to say the least. Be prepared to spend at least one and a half to two hours to comfortably walk around and enjoy the visit. During summer, better to avoid bright sunny hours of the day as walking barefoot on granite floor is a very distressing experience. Reasonably well maintained (ASI) and the landscaped area and lawn in front is very beautiful.

Majestic place. Had a great visit and darshan. The mandir is about 1300 years old and a sheer engineering marvel. The main sanctum is built and carved in one rock and it is surrounded by huge square of small temples. Has one of the largest Shivlingeam. Entry is restricted to a distance. Now it is under the control of Archeological Survey of India.

I visited it for the fist time in my life. Such a big temple. Huge architectural works. Never seen such a big temple like this. Have good parking facilities and have clean restroom facilities outside the main entrance. Was amazed by our ancestors works on this temple. Need to be protected for years to prove that we are the oldest to construct the strongest architectural marvel in the world. Try to spend more time inside the temple. When you plan for a tour plan atleast half a day for this temple. Do visit this temple once in a life time.

The best way to see how good your ancestors were!! What an amazing place You can park your car in designated parking area and walk through either east gate or north entrance .. very big temple and you need about 60-90 min to visit this place. Better to do enough history research before coming here .. expect rush for Darsan. We visited around 11AM and there was heavy rush as well as sun was at its peak ! But manageable A must visit place in India

UNESCO world heritage site and a functioning temple remaining you the greatness of Cholas and the Intrigue Architecture. So amazed by the details in the carving, it is as if they created a 3D model in the carving. Also, amazed and happy to see people of different faiths in the premises - world would be a better place if we have more places where this happens. We can all appreciate others and co exist even if we look different and have different beliefs.

I have went to brihadeeswara temple recently. It is the most famous temple in tour Tamil Nadu. Inside the temple they have so many book stalls, clay pots like that . The zoo inside the temple has deer, peacock, rabbit . Not like old days now a days the count of animals was less. But they properly taking care of the animals. And visitors are allowed to see the animals. The park inside the temple was not available now.

Amazing temple. The architecture is awesome and the place is nicely located within the city with large parking space..The best part is that even though the temperature was 39degrees in Tanjavur, never felt it because of the cool breeze around the place. The place was crowded but since it was a large temple with an equal amount of open space, it never feels so. The temple and it's premises are well maintained unlike most of the temples. And there is no parking issues. There is paid parking bang opposite of the temple.

This is simply something beyond the wonders that man can build. Imagine the expertise of the great chola king who built this before a thousand years now. Even with all the technical developments today, it's almost impossible to recreate a marvel like this. The art, craftsmanship, technology, accuracy and the many hidden secrets which many scholars and researchers are still fascinating about and above all, the devotees gather to get a glass mode of the mighty powerful god Pragatheeswarar, makes this one of the only places on earth. Stand back and look into the detailed sculptures in all temples towers, pillars etc. They have many stories, histories and myths in each of them. The main temple was built by the King Great Raja Raja Cholan while few others inside the campus was built later during the Maratha Rule. I wish, if there had not been any invasion which killed the art, science and technology behind such temples Tamil culture along with the wonders would have reached the heights of Sky. PS : It was very worrying to see a number of masks, plastic water bottles, plastic carry bags inside the temple compound. I beg my people not to litter this place. Please Read Speed and Follow this practice.

Excellent showcase of ancient architecture. Beautifully crafted with a lot of history. The story of 80ton top structure of the temple is astonishing along with the architecture. We've to enter barefooted inside the temple & in noon time the floors are steamed very hard. But the temple is beautiful to watch in any time with the clear blue sky above the temple. Absolutely loved the site 😍

Simply a brilliant masterpiece that reminds us of our history and leaves us wondering how our ancestors managed to build such fascinating monuments without modern technology! Must visit place if you are in and around Thanjavur. Gets quite crowded during weekends; and despite of many notices asking people to wear masks and follow guidelines a few people loiter around without masks. Maybe temple authorities go strict on enforcing masks. Parking available for cars right opposite (on the other side of the main road) to the temple. Luggage holding space and footwear racks made available here.

Thanks to the large-scale restoration work done, the temple still holds the viewer spellbound. During the evening, the lights placed at specific points illuminate the complex beautifully. No surprise then that this place attracts a lot of tourists. One can easily spend a couple of hours here.

Thanjavur, the center of architecture art and religion of South India is also home to the grand Brihadeshwara Temple. The temple, which is also called as Brihadeshwara Temple and RajaRajeswara Temple RajaRajeswara, is among the largest temples of the country. The Brihadeshwara temple along with Airavatesvara temple and Gangaikonda Cholapuram is known as the Great Living Cholla Temple and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Brihadeshwara temple, which is dedicated to Shiva, was built by Raja Raja Chola I. The construction was completed in 1010 which it means that the temple is more than 1000 years old. The structure is a proof of wealth, artistic expertise and power of the Chola kingdom. According to the inscriptions present in the temple, Kunjara Mallan Raja Raja Perumthachan was the engineer and architect of this famous temple. The structure is an example of Dravidian architecture and it represents the ideology of Tamil civilization and Chola Empire. The temple has the worlds tallest vimanam (temple tower) and its Kumbam (the structure on the top) weighs approximately 80 tons. The temple has a huge statue of Nandi (sacred bull) at the entrance. The statue is carved out of a single rock and weighs around 20 tons. The Lingam inside the temple is 3.7 meters tall.

Brahadeeswara Temple at Tanjore (Thanjavur), dedicated to Lord Shiva, also called the Big Temple, belongs to the architecture of the Chola period. Built in the 10th Century A.D., by Raja Raja Chola, the Temple Tower is capped by an 81.3 tonnes round monolithic cupola. This enormous piece of stone is said to have been was moved into position by moving it along an inclined plane 6 kms. long. The temple is considered an engineering skill of the Chola architects who planned its construction in such a way that the shadow of the cupola never falls on the ground. Look at the Nandi facing Shiva ..Waiting for him eagerly..

1000 year old historical temple. Amazing architecture of the ancient history. We must see the capability of our ancestors of one thousand years ago. Even now a days with the modern technology it is impossible to build a beautiful structure. The dome of the temple made with huge rock of eight ton and hoisted to the top of the temple and erected is a surprise

Really impressed. But it needs lots of maintenance. The temple looks good from the outside. But when you go closer you can see people scribbling and young boys and girls visit and do romance here, it looks like a beach not a temple and the guards are also less here during day time. What hurts me more is in few area of lingas around the temple are just left as it is without any name and gates (Usually in Our state all the lingas have names and they will be written up or somewhere but here it is not even there and no gates too people can go inside and can even touch!!) I just now googled and found that the temple is under ASI. Please central government concentrate on it 🙏 build more gates and protection to it rather than fitting new lights and beautiful lighting to it.

One of the most Magnificent and man made wonders is the temple. The grandeur of the temple will make a person awestruck and wonder how so much intricate work and technology was used to build such massive structures. The energy in the Varahi Amman temple and main Shiva Linga is impeccable. One must definitely visit in a lifetime.

Brihadisvara temple, seen in profile. The Brihadeshvara temple plan and development utilizes the axial and symmetrical geometry rules.[26]It is classified as Perunkoil (also called Madakkoil), a big temple built on a higher platform of a natural or man-made mounds.[27] The temple complex is a rectangle that is almost two stacked squares, covering 240.79 metres (790.0 ft) east to west, and 121.92 metres (400.0 ft) north to south. In this space are five main sections: the sanctum with the towering superstructure (sri vimana), the Nandi hall in front (Nandi-mandapam) and in between these the main community hall (mukhamandapam), the great gathering hall (mahamandapam) and the pavilion that connects the great hall with the sanctum (ardhamandapam).[28] The temple complex integrates a large pillared and covered veranda (prakara) in its spacious courtyard, with a perimeter of about 450 metres (1,480 ft) for circumambulation. Outside this pillared veranda there are two walls of enclosure, the outer one being defensive and added in 1777 CE by the French colonial forces with gun-holes with the temple serving as an arsenal. They made the outer wall high, isolating the temple complex area. On its east end is the original main gopuram or gateway that is barrel vaulted. It is less than half the size of the main temple's vimana. Additional structures were added to the original temple after the 11th century, such as a mandapa in its northeast corner and additional gopurams (gateways) on its perimeters to allow people to enter and leave from multiple locations.[28][29] Some of the shrines and structures were added during the Pandya, Nayaka, Vijayanagara and Maratha era, before the colonial era started, and these builders respected the original plans and symmetry rules. Inside the original temple courtyard, along with the main sanctum and Nandi-mandapam are two major shrines, one for Kartikeya and for Parvati. The complex has additional smaller shrines.[28][30][31] The Brihadisvara temple continued the Hindu temple traditions of South India by adopting architectural and decorative elements, but its scale significantly exceeded the temples constructed before the 11th century. The Chola era architects and artisans innovated the expertise to scale up and build, particularly with heavy stone and to accomplish the 63.4 metres (208 ft) high towering vimana.[30][28]

The beautiful Brihadishvara Temple, also called Rajarajesvaram or Peruvudaiyār Kōvil, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in South bank of Kaveri river. It is one of the largest South Indian temples and an exemplary example of a fully realized Dravidian architecture. It is called as Dhakshina Meru (Meru of south) and was built by Tamil king Raja Raja Chola I between 1003 and 1010 AD, the temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Great Living Chola Temples", along with the Chola dynasty era Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and Airavatesvara temple that are about 70 kilometres and 40 kilometres to its northeast.

From Uraiyur to Thanjavur Vijayalaya, one of the Cholas from Uraiyur, captured the Kaveri delta which was under control of the Muttaraiyar (subordinate to the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram), in the middle of 9th century. He built the town of Thanjavur and a temple for goddess Nishumbhasudeni there. His successors extended the empire and included the regions under the Pallavas and the Pandyas too. Rajaraja Chola is considered the greatest Chola ruler and ascended the throne in 985 CE and reorganised the administration. Rajaraja's son Rajendra I continued his father's policies and extended his empire up to the Ganga valley, Sri Lanka and south-east Asia. • Splendid Temples and Bronze Sculpture The splendid temples at Thanjavur and Gangaikondalcholapuram built by Rajaraja and Rajendra I are architectural marvels of medieval India. The temples under the Cholas were the nuclie of the villages, the centre of crafts and were well endowed with land from the king and other rich people. The produce of the land helped maintain the people working in the temple such as priest, garland-makers, sweepers, cooks, musicians, dancers, etc. The bronze art of sculpture that was born in the Chola temples is considered to be as the finest bronze works in the world. • Agriculture and Irrigation The Kaveri breaks into many channels before emptying itself in the Bay of Bengal. These branches were flooded by rains and deposited fertile soil on the banks which in turn helped the agriculture in this region By the 5th and 6th century large scale cultivation started in the Kaveri valley as forests were cleared and levelled for creating more cultivable land. In the delta region embankments were built to prevent flooding and canals were constrcuted to carry water to the fields. Artificial irrigation took place with the construction of wells and water tanks. • The Administration of the Empire Peasant settlements known as ur became prosperous with the advent of artificialirrigation. Groups of such villages formed a group called nadu and with the village council they administered the villages by collecting tax and maintaining justice. Rich peasants of the Vellala dynasty controlled the functioning of the nadus under the watchful eye of the Chola emperor. The Chola kings also gave titles such as muvendavelan (peasant serving three kings) and araiyar (chief) to rich people as marks of respect.Brahmanas were given land grants known as brahmadeya whihc resulted in more and more brahmanas settling in the Kaveri valley. Each brahmadeya was looked after by a sabha or assemble of Brahmana landholders and were highly efficient. Trader association called nagarams also helped in the town administration. Inscription in Uttaramerur in chingleput distric in Tamil Nadu shows how sabhas functioned and the committees that looked after irrigation works, gardens, temples, etc.Members of these committees were chosen by lottery

(Translated by Google) The pride of Tamils who have been around for thousands of years ... The sculptures in this magnificent temple are all very well carved. The sanctum sanctorum of Ganesha, Subramanian and Amman is located around the original Prakativar Sanctum. Inscriptions of the Tamil language can be seen on the walls of the temple. Over the years, however, all parts of the temple have undergone periodic renovations and are well maintained. This is a good example of the best practice of the state archeology department. The whole temple is very well maintained and clean. It is difficult for the world to recreate such greatness. We will protect and appreciate special works. Long live Tamil! வளர்க வையம் !! Floor around will be burning your legs. +Cleanliness is maintained at peak and co-operating with authority is important. +Plastic bags are not allowed inside. +You can go around the entire premises as well as temple and the pragaram. That makes 3 rounds around the temple. +Plenty of shops are available in the first entrance also outside the temple. +Buy a book of Temple's history from office. Very useful stuff.

Such a big and beautiful temple. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site. They say it's 1000 year old temple. They say that No earthquake had shaken this temple. Good place for photography. There are also cloak rooms to deposit chappals , luggages. They took 20 rupees for one luggage. I suggest people to visit temple in mornings or evenings. Big Temple Thanajvur Brihadeeshwara Temple (Peruvudaiyar Kovil) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Periya Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajesvaram. It is one of the largest temples in India and is an example of Dravidian architecture during the Chola period. Built by emperor Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010 AD, the temple turned 1000 years old in 2010. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Great Living Chola Temples”, with the other two being the Brihadeeswarar Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temple. The temple stands amidst fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century. The vimanam (temple tower) is 216 ft (66 m) high and is the tallest in the world. The Kumbam (the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) of the temple is carved out of a single rock and weighs around 80 tons. There is a big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock measuring about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high at the entrance. The entire temple structure is made out of granite, the nearest sources of which are about 60 km to the west of temple. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.
