πŸ‘πŸ‘ Authentic experience in a very atmospheric setting, a rambling old palace containing a temple at one end and the theatre at the other in the far corner. Hands down, this beats the tourist shows for the real thing at any of the hotels. A 3 hr. performance with the action taking place in the last act... People often mention show,

Authentic experience in a very atmospheric setting, a rambling old palace containing a temple at one end and the theatre at the other in the far corner. Hands down, this beats the tourist shows for the real thing at any of the hotels. A 3 hr. performance with the action taking place in the last act, so wait for it. Bring mosquito repellent, they might be nipping at your feat. The website is not kept up to date. Best to call ahead by phone to find out the dates and times. Usually, it's a 6 PM start. There are only a few performances each month. If you're lucky enough to be visiting during those times, don't miss it!

We visited from Europe to see the traditional performance. It was great acting, costumes and singing but it was very loud which is why we had to leave early. We measured a noise level of 100+ decibel continuously due to the high speaker volume which is damaging to the ears. Maybe this can be adjusted to a lower level in the future? Regards!

Amazing Traditional experience. These people not charging anything for the show proves their devotion towards the art. A must watch for a true Kathakali lover.

It wasn’t easy to find a place in Trivandrum where they show traditional performances from Kerala. I came across this theatre online and I rang and was told to come on the same day. It’s a real hidden gem. It’s free, which is nice because it makes it available for those who can’t afford it but I would have happily paid for a ticket foreign price. It was a real treat and a highlight of my trip in Kerala. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ˜Š

A tiny performing arts school in an unassuming corner of a very old building. Nearby landmarks are the SP hospital and Fort High School. Once the show starts, you're transported to an amazing land of intricate facial expressions, hand gestures and incredible percussion in Kathakali and Kutiyattom, two classical art forms of Kerala. My traveling group and I were lucky to have a lovely gentleman tell us the background story of the Ramayana, and explain how it tied into what we were going to watch. He also shared the history of the artform, saying it was at least 2,000 years old. And after the show he took us backstage to meet the performers. The school holds two performances a month, so be sure to check dates in advance!
