This place is the proof that a great civilization from before the Incas existed and flourished in the Bolivian and Peruvian highlands: Tiwanaku was the ceremonial and political center of a architecturally sophisticated people. You should definitely contract a guide to enjoy the ruins in depth.

Wish I could visit this site everyday. The energy here is spectacular! The stone work is out of this world. What an interesting, yet mysterious culture.

Definitely worth the drive (1.5hrs) from down town La Paz. You will get an idea of Bolivian precolombinian civilizations. There is a small museum worth looking to get an idea of other cultures are out;the period and the timeframe relative to other cultures in the east and west.

An archeological site of a culture which could be ancestor af Inca Empire, also is the best Bolivia ruin inspite of everything has not been discovery yet. There is not any full building, and the existing constructions have not enough maintenance, but the amazing history and information of the guide tour make this site a worthwhile option. Please do not go without a guide tour, and try to come here before to go to Machu Picchu. Up. Information of the guide tour. Down. There are places not explored.

If you find this kind of thing interesting then it’s really a must visit otherwise it will be a waste of time. For me I thought it was pretty cool. I also highly recommend getting a tour guide as without the tour guide I would have no idea what I’m looking at would have given this place like two stars.

Tiwanaku, capital of a powerful pre-Hispanic empire that dominated a large area of the southern Andes and beyond, reached its apogee between 500 and 900 AD. Its monumental remains testify to the cultural and political significance of this civilisation, which is distinct from any of the other pre-Hispanic empires of the Americas.

In a search for pyramids and ancient structures... The pyramid of Tiwanaku is there, too bad it's quite destroyed. A couple of museums can help to envision the structure at its best.
