Timor-Leste
was
my
90th
country,
and
this
was
quite
possibly
the
worst
"upscale"
hotel
I
have
ever
experienced
anywhere
in
the
world.
No
hot
water.
Uncomfortable,
shaky
bed.
Dirty
sheets
and
towels.
Generally
dingy
throughout.
Broken
furniture
in
the
room.
Bland
but
expensive
on-site
restaurant.
Inconsistent
wifi.
The
worst
part,
however,
was
the
staff.
With
the
only
exception
being
a
young
man
who
worked
the
evening
shift
and
was
actually
attempting
to
assist
us
with
the
wifi,
the
entirety
of
the
staff
was
gruff
and
dismissive,
if
not
outright
hostile
toward
us.
I
offer
some
examples:
Although
we
typically
carry
our
own
luggage
to
the
room,
we
will
relent
if
a
porter
keeps
insisting
to
take
them
for
us.
At
this
hotel,
the
porter
was
insistent,
so
we
allowed
him
to
bring
our
two
small
backpacks.
I
tipped
him
$5
US,
and
he
actually
COMPLAINED
about
it!
On
the
morning
of
our
departure,
we
had
an
early
flight
and
asked
the
hotel
to
provide
a
cab
to
pick
us
up
at
6:00
AM.
We
were
in
the
lobby
promptly
at
6
and
found
the
lights
off
and
the
"24-hour
reception"
staff
asleep
on
the
lobby
sofas.
I
asked
them
what
they
would
like
me
to
do
with
the
key
cards,
and
they
simply
rolled
over
and
ignored
us.
I
then
asked
if
they
could
call
a
taxi
for
us
as
there
were
no
taxis
waiting
and
none
to
be
seen
passing
on
the
street.
One
of
the
staff
members
begrudgingly
got
up,
walked
over
to
the
desk
phone
and
made
a
call.
He
let
it
ring
for
less
than
30
seconds
and,
receiving
no
answer,
shrugged
at
us
and
laid
back
down
again.
Don't
stay
here.
If
you
do,
consider
yourself
warned.
