We had the most wonderful time with our Tourguide Gentjan! He was super knowledgeable, friendly and had the best sense of humour. Thank you for making our short time in Albania and Macedonia so memorable. We can’t wait to come back and explore more!

(Translated by Google) It's a startling museum about the atrocities of communism, though we've been to a few similar places. Sound, light effects and artistic installations also enhance the effect, very moving, creepy, scary. Anyone who is a little interested in the horrors of history and communist dictatorships should definitely visit. It is close to Skanderbég Square with an entrance fee of 500 LEK, which is approx. $ 5,000.

A beautiful day in the Albanian Mountains with nature at its best! We all had different hiking levels and the area provided walking areas as well as mountainous cliffs for all skill levels. After our hikes we all enjoyed lunch at Bolivia restaurant which had incredible views of the lake, and farm to table greek salads with local Albanian dishes. Drive from Tirania to lake was cramped and uncomfortable in economy vehicle. Drivers should rent better SUV vehicles on the challenging Albanian dirt and gravel roads.

Not as expected according to price. There were lack of basic things like set of shampoo and towels (only one towel for everything). Kitchen is too small to cook a decent meal. To get the keys you have to go far away from the apartment and check out is to early (including the time to deliver the keys again). The kitchen sink was leaking badly and we had to clean before leaving. Overall not very good for a superior room.

Incredible museum that really is more like two museums in one. The first being the actual bunker which was built in the 1980s but never used and the second being a historical walk-through of life in Albania during the communist era. There is a lot of reading involved in the self guided tour but it is very rich in history and personal stories.

This is a neat museum. Cost is 500 Lek. Had several large areas to explore as well as mini-exhibits with English explanations. Takes less than 30 minutes, but definitely worth checking out

We rented the rooftop apartment place because of influencer suggestion and yes I do agree that the view is absolutely amazing and we really enjoyed this but to be honest that's the best from this place. The internet was awful, we needed for working but even the Netflix on the TV didn't worked in most of the moments. The bed was uncomfortable though. My back was hurting after each night and I had to wake up super early because of that. In bathroom there is not where you can put your shampoo or brush and paste for teeth. We didnt had in bathroom toilet paper and washing soup. The curtains was ripped off so I had to step on a chair and fix them by myself.. Honestly we had big expectations. I liked that at least the space was clean and the ac system was nice though but still we would not repeat. I suggest the place for not more than 2 nights at least for enjoying the view. Also in their site dont have an option for direct reservations online and in booking this apartment was not at all in the options which made things harder. They want 30% of the payment in advance which was possible by sending the money in Western Union, bank transfer or to send them my card number and my ccv code which I definitely didn't agreed..

We recently went on a tour of the Albanian Alps with Choose Balkans, and it was amazing! Normally, I avoid tours as much as possible because they lack flexibility, it's hard to explore things that interest you, and you always feel rushed for time. However, Choose Balkans made it a great experience. Everything was planned and executed well, and it was so nice not having to be concerned about logistics. Plus, the views were breathtakingly beautiful. All of the hosts are so wonderful, welcoming, kind, and accommodating. Alban was super speedy about responding and so patient with all of my questions over email. I actually managed to forget to pack my hiking boots in my rush to catch my flight . . . Andy walked around town with us, trying to find a store that would still be open. There were none. Our expert guide Ervin was able to call in a favor to one of his female friends, and they let me borrow shoes for the trip! The others at the office were also very friendly. Ervin is a true mountaineer. He did not break a sweat during the hikes. I felt bad that we were slowing him down! He took us over streams, jumping over rocks, balancing on logs, through the deep snow, making footholds for us, and up steep inclines with loose rocks. He knows the mountains so well and was extremely accommodating to us. It was a very relaxing tour; since it was just the two of us + Ervin and sometimes our driver, we could set the schedule as needed, and we never felt rushed. The trip into Prizren, Kosovo was fun, as well, but there was a lot more driving than we had expected. In the end, they even bought us a lovely bottle of local wine as a gift! Highly recommend Choose Balkans if you want to explore Albania! If/When we ever make it back to Albania, definitely will look into more tours with them.

Would you visit an art museum where almost all the art are covered-up? What you see on the exterior of this museum now is what you'll see on the inside as well! The reception tried to justify it by calling it "modern art." I call it total BS! Forget about wasting your money, don't even waste a minute of your time here. It's the WORST excuse of a museum, EVER!

What can I say? They give the impression they are a modern european company but they are not, I’ve travelled all round the world and through out Albania and they are the only company that has demanded I give them my passport to keep while I stay in their apartments. Are you the police or immigration? Take my credit card if you are worried. This practice is not acceptable and would avoid using them at all cost.

I booked a three day tour with them but the weather shows thunder/lightening. They refuse to cancel or issue a refund. They want hikers to hike in unsafe conditions because they focus more on profit than people. They also cancelled part of the tour (without a refund) because of unsafe hiking and snow but replaced it with staying the entire trip in one area (not three as previously planned). So now they want me to pay for a new (not as good itinerary) and hike 7 hours per day in lightening. Its unsafe and appalling that they care more about money.

The staff is very kind and helpful. The apartment seems to be nice but it is not. We needed TV for our kid but it wasn't working and they couldn't fix it. We found that a quilt on a bed is dirty and disgusting. Many broken equipments inside. Very wet and hot hall in front of the apartment because they do laundry there without any ventilation.

Unfortunately on the 11/12/19 the Gallery was closed. However, no informative notice explaining this. Luckily, I met a lady at the library that told me that indeed, the gallery was closed and that she didn't know when it will be reopened. It could take one, two weeks or even more. Anyways, it would have been appreciated to know this before hand.

7/8ths of the paintings are covered. Apparently there's a new curator who thought it would be a great idea to cover all the paintings so you can't actually see them. The way the woman selling tickets said it, it's clear there ha e been a lot of complaints. Maybe this is fine if you live here and can visit regularly enough to catch them all uncovered at some point, but as a visitor, it's pretty frustrating, and doesn't seem to honor the paintings and artists. Though it was just about $5 for two adults and a senior citizen, I don't think it's worth visiting until the paintings are all uncovered.

Interesting art from Albania's communist era, but little to no information in English. Would be 5 stars if the app worked or there was a little write of for the paintings. Has great potential and is worth a visit regardless.

What a gem! This is a wonderful museum with very interesting and beautiful work. No abstract paintings, just realistic paintings of the history of Albania. Some propaganda and some depictions of normal Albanian life. I did not know any of the artists, but they can surely measure with international painters from the same period 1880-1970. It was very quiet in the museum. The entrance does not look to be open and the doors have mirrors, not very welcoming. But behind the doors is an unexpected wealth of nice art pieces.

A reminder not to forget what dictatorship does and what humans can do to other humans. I grew up as a child in that system and was shocking to see the 'other side of the medal'. We were so much brainwashed that we lived in the happiest country on the world...a hard confrontation. It takes 2 good hours to visit the place and the curators have done an outstanding job.

This fantastic conversion – from a massive Cold War bunker on the outskirts of Tirana into a history and contemporary art museum – is Albania's most exciting new sight and easily a Tirana highlight. With almost 3000 sq metres of space underground spread over several floors, the bunker was built for Albania's political elite in the 1970s and remained a secret for much of its existence. Now it hosts exhibits that combine the modern history of Albania with pieces of contemporary art.

Dedicated to the secret police of Enver Hoxha, the Sigurimi, the museum sheds light on his methods of arrest, his techniques of interrogation or torture, all supported by the testimonies of survivors.Necessary to understand the regime of terror under which the Albanians lived for nearly half a century.

Well honestly it’s very small. I thought it would be much bigger. But still cool. Kinda little hard to breathe sometimes maybe it’s just the mask so I took it off about half way. Every room has a lot to read. It’s more of an history museum than a bunker. I spent about 2.5 hours inside reading. Price / cost 500

We had an amazing time on their 4-day Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo tour. The days had a good balance of planned and unplanned. I really appreciated not having to worry about planning the little details (I'm usually in charge of that). All the hotels were great and the breakfasts were satisfying. Our tour guide, Gezim, did a fantastic job. He was very knowledgable about the places we went and showed us some great restaurants as well. He was also great with my 2 (almost 3) year old. Highlights: The castle in Shkodra where we got caught in a rain storm Getting adopted by a street dog in Kosovo for half an hour All the amazing food Our one issue was resolved before we even finished the evening tour of Tirana

I booked a 5 day self guided tour to the north : as a single traveller I had do pay almost double (single supplement) which should have been refunded partly in case people join. Although travelling with about 30 people in the busses (on the website they promise max 8 people) I haven't seen any money back. And this although I haven't seen the Vau I Dejes and have slept in a poorer dormitory the first night with a shared bathroom. To actually being able to do the hikes you need Wikiloc (you have to pay for it). This condition is not mentioned anywhere. I booked the trip through the agency to have little "privacy" and less stress but in the end this was not the case at all. I had the same experience as people that payed 1/4 of what I paid. - unfortunaltely just a exploitation of tourists!! Do yourself a favor and book the transportation through the ferry website! The two girls I communicated with were at least always helpful!

Our tour group was me and an Australian couple and we ALL enjoyed every minute. We booked several other tours with Choose Balkans and we recommend to everyone visiting Albania and the Balkans. Thank you, Choose Balkans, for a great time. :)

This journey was an absolute delight from start to finish. The well-crafted itinerary allowed us to explore a diverse range of cultures, landscapes, and historical sites. Our knowledgeable guide Sokol ensured that every stop was informative and engaging, making the trip educational as well as enjoyable. I can't recommend this tour highly enough for anyone seeking a comprehensive and unforgettable adventure across multiple Balkans countries. Truly a 5-star expedition!

Brikena was our guide on the city and food tour. She was intelligent, charming and spoke perfect English. We found her utterly delightful. We loved sampling the various food and drinks, native to her country. You will leave feeling happy not hungry and more knowledgeable about the culture and history of Albania.

Choose Balkans used a freelancer who is an UNLICENSED tour guide and self-proclaimed “hiking guide”. He did not know hardly any history and would invent information when asked something he did not know. His English was hard to understand too. He had bad time management skills by disregarding when the winter sun set, not knowing the winter museum hours, and driving HALF of the speed limit. Thus, we missed a UNESCO museum, could not see the castle grounds and hilltop view or countryside while driving for hours after sunset, and did not have free time as mentioned in the itinerary. He was very kind, but obviously not qualified as a tour guide (even though I asked for proof of his license) during 4 days in late December. Since it was off season, we should have been booked into hotels in the old town centers. At 2 hotels, I was given unenclosed showers, so water went everywhere, including on towels and my stuff. The hotels were more like 2 stars than 3 stars. Sirma at Choose Balkans was very quick and thorough when responding to my questions and did daily follow-up during the tour. Unfortunately, even though we complained as a group during the tour, nothing could be done to change guides at the last minute over the holidays. I would NOT recommend using Choose Balkans.

Basic but good location. It was not located at the address the booking said. There was no elevator but was also mentioned on the booking (we were at the topfloor apartment). There were multiple hairs between the sheets. :( Certainly not the best apartment we had in Albania.

Terrible. We did not have a tour booked with this company but we were staying in one of their apartments in Tirana. Our plan was to head to north Albania to hike in the Valbona area. On arrival in Albania it was raining so we asked the Choose Balkans representative who was checking us in to the apartment whether it was going to be raining all week. She categorically said yes it would be, then when we mentioned our plan to hike she stated with certainty that there was 'no way' we would be able to do what we wanted as the area was covered in snow later than normal. She advised us a variety of other places they could take us in southern Albania. As a result we rearranged our plans totally to travel to Greece (sorry Albania we really wanted to explore). The following day however the rain was patchy and the sun strong. When we went to the Choose Balkans office to arrange a taxi to the airport the same representative told us that actually since it was now sunny the routes we wanted to hike later in the week would now probably be fine! Furthermore, the guest house in Teth where we were due to stay asked us why we had cancelled. When we explained that we had been told the mountain passes were shut they said the opposite and said we could have done the hikes, albeit with a guide! Being a tour operator themselves we took Choose Balkans advice seriously and, being on the spot we totally changed our plans, paying extra to go elsewhere. It almost seemed like their advice was given on the chance we'd book an alternative tour with them.

Unfortunately due to the humidity, despite both the sheets and the towels were clean, I found it wet. I had to provide myself to dry them. I think it is appropriate to find a solution in this regard. (Original) Ho soggiornato presso le stanze affittate dall'agenzia, personale molto cordiale e accogliente, le stanze sono nuove, ristrutturate e pulite. I'm very fond of this type of museum. Not particularly because of the quality of the paintings but because of the importance to save these relics of the past for future generations. The historical theme tableaux and the socialist realism never cease to amaze me. Recommended if you want to scratch the surface of Albania's history. Some of the most stunning artwork I've seen up close, particularly from Kilica, Ceka and Hila. And only a few bucks to enter!

I absolutely loved and enjoyed my tour here. Everything is archived very well and good english speaking staff is willingly helping you and gives you a description for everything very well. Besides the national heritage and historical paintings and sculptures from the communist era, you'll have here two contemporary art galleries.. the one I was inside was about rhe quick development of Tirana, urbanizing projects and on which costs and risks the labours are working. An interesting point of view, mostly not seen from anyone. Despite heavy injuries and low payments and bad sometimes without insurance at all the labours are still working. I've posted here some of my favorite paintings and sculptures from the gallery.

  • 5/5 Alan B. 3 years ago on Google
Ok they've covered up many of the paintings which is certainly unusual, but after spending some time I gradually came to like the idea. The covers are slightly see through so you get a teasing view of what's below and they periodically change what is on show and have 'grand unveilings' with a talk, so maybe it all adds excitement. The building itself is beautiful and worth visiting for that alone (though at the moment there are many cracks from the Nov 2019 earthquake). So for the incredibly reasonable entry fee I'd say it is a must see.

That is a very easy to reach very interesting museum about the socialist era Albania and the history of its security forces. The bunker itself is fairly big and very interesting. You don't get the chance to visit structures like that very often. Loved the mixture of history with the art rooms. If you liked that visit also the bunkart1 a bit outside of the city (but reachable by a city bus). It's quite bigger. 4€. friendly staff worth the visit.

  • 4/5 J. Michael S. 4 years ago on Google
The NAG lacked contemporary gallery lighting in windowless areas and aircon, so on a summer day the interior temperature was not exactly ideal. A major attraction is the collection of social realist paintings that translate into art the idea of the ‘New Man’ during the communist period, with the ‘common worker’ as the main recurrent personage. The special Qamil Grezda exhibition hosted by his son Emir saved the day, as the art on display offers not only samples of Mr. Grezda's talent but also insight into his creative and private life.

Creative re-purposing happened at Bunk’Art, an escape bunker originally built for Albania’s long-term communist dictator Enver Hoxha (1941-1985) and his government. A portion of the original five-floor, 106-room underground palace now houses a historical museum and contemporary art gallery, showcasing recreations of how the space would have functioned, with furniture dating back to the original era. Historical exhibitions on the Albanian communist army and daily lives of Albanians during the regime alternate with art installations, while the former assembly hall has been turned into a concert hall.
