After
watching
the
TV
drama
``Grand
Mama's
Melancholy,''
I
went
to
see
the
filming
location
of
the
Sakano
family
residence,
also
known
as
the
Domeki
family.
It
is
a
wealthy
farmer's
mansion
built
over
300
years
ago
and
has
a
site
of
approximately
10,000
square
meters.The
main
building,
front
gate,
and
attached
fence
have
been
designated
as
nationally
important
cultural
properties,
and
are
open
to
the
public
as
the
Mitsukaido
Land
Museum.
The
main
house
has
three
rooms:
a
four-room
living
area
with
rooms
arranged
in
a
rice
field
shape,
a
spacious
earthen
floor,
and
a
tatami
room
with
a
key.
A
complex,
all-thatched,
gabled,
curved
roof
covers
the
mansion.
The
openwork
transoms,
doorways,
and
altars
are
also
skillfully
crafted.
At
the
rear
of
the
west
side
of
the
main
building
is
a
two-story
wooden
tile-roofed
study
called
Tsukiha-ro.
It
is
a
modern
and
delicate
Taisho
architecture
with
lattice
doors,
glass
doors,
a
bathroom
with
an
umbrella
ceiling,
alcoves,
and
transoms.
The
view
of
the
backyard
from
this
second
floor
is
also
atmospheric.
In
addition,
surrounding
the
samurai
residence-like
walls
is
a
mansion
forest
with
plum
gardens,
bamboo
groves,
and
miscellaneous
trees,
as
well
as
hydrangeas
and
shaga,
creating
a
refreshing
spatial
scene.
I
have
seen
various
Japanese
private
houses
all
over
the
country,
but
this
one
is
rare
in
every
respect,
including
its
structure,
size,
and
history,
and
combined
with
its
beautiful
state
of
preservation,
I
think
it
is
a
national
treasure.
Admission
fee:
300
yen
for
adults
(free
for
those
over
65).
The
parking
lot
is
located
along
the
approach
road
at
the
southwestern
entrance
of
Yashikimori,
and
can
accommodate
about
30
cars.
There
is
also
a
large
parking
lot
for
large
vehicles
and
location
personnel.
