We loved the exhibit on First People and the temporary exhibit as well. I wish it was open later as we had to rush by 4-6pm but otherwise absolutely fantastic. Loved every bit of it. Learned so much. A must see! Parking is separate cost and $13 so be prepared for that.

I spent 4.5 hours here. It is a thorough, interesting and well-laid-out museum, all the displays nicely organized and not too crammed with items. Bilingual labelling. They don’t shy away from the bad, sad and regrettable parts of our country’s past, and the good parts - and notable people - are celebrated also. The Grand Hall is impressive. Sections on First Peoples, Early Canada, Colonial Canada, Modern Canada, a special exhibition (July 2022) on the times that the War Measures (later, Emergency Measures) Act was invoked, and the Canadian Stamp Collection. A few sections are closed for renovations. There’s a cinema, with alternating French and English productions, but I didn’t see any - they may all be aimed at children(?). There is an additional section called Children’s Museum, which I did not visit. There’s a small eatery/café on the ground floor. Every Canadian should visit this excellent illustration of our history.

I didn’t go in but from here I visited the surrounding area of the museum, and it’s super nice with amazing view of the parliament building and Alexander bridge. Love the little human-made pond with a bear as well. Great spot to visit while in Ottawa and Gatineau areas

Very interesting museum, I did not get to go through the entire museum because of the time limit. I was distracted by everything I passed and spent too much time on the first floor and had to rush the other floors. I would definitely go back here again next time and try to manage my time better so I could see the entire museum. I'm pretty sure I missed a lot of interesting and amazing displays. 😭

This museum is a must see on Ottawa. It is equally as interesting for adults and children. I would recommend spending at least two hours here. The exhibits chronology go through Candian history and are a great mix of artifacts, videos, and hands on exhibits. Everything is very interactive and it tells a great story of the country. The exhibits also go into individual stories which bring the content to life. Very well done and worth the price of admission.

An amazing museum where you can learn something new every time you visit. They have an awesome children’s area with lots of exploratory and learning activities. My kids love it. They also have an in-house cinema with a super giant screen and comfy reclining seats where you can watch documentary movies. As of May 2023, tickets cost $21 (adults), $16 (students), and $14 (children aged 2-12). Children under 2 don’t need tickets, and you save when you buy a family ticket ($53 for two adults and two kids). If you live around Ottawa or plan to visit often, it’s best to buy annual membership for $65 (a single person) or $125 (two adults and four kids). With the membership, you also get admission to the Canadian War Museum. Plus, if you visit Toronto, your Museum of History membership gives you free access to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

We used to take the kids years ago and mainly spent our time on the second floor (kids area) which was very nice and very educational. However, we visited recently and decided to also see the third floor (Canadian History) and LOVED it. Frankly, I plan to go back and take my time looking at all the exhibits and historic details... So much to see and read about. The first floor entails exhibits on the early Canadians and Indigenous culture, and unfortunately I did not have the chance to see all of them. Highly recommended and one of the best museums to visit while in Ottawa.

Canadian Museum of History is a celebration of all things Canadian, from the maple leaf to totems. Millions of artifacts, artworks and other specimens. We easily could’ve spent a day going through all of the exhibits ranging from early Canadian history to modern day. On the lower Grand Hall is the impressive First Peoples exhibit highlighted by towering totem poles, along with statues and intricate attires. Above this, Canadian History Hall contains a huge collection of artifacts starting around the founding of the Confederation followed by exhibits including the Iron Road, Canada’s coming of age, the Quebec referendum, and modern Indigenous culture. I’m not surprised that the Canadian Museum of History is among the most visited museums. A must-do on our travel itinerary to Ottawa. It’s situated in Gatineau, Quebec across the bridge with a nice view of Parliament Hill too.

What an amazing way to spend the day! Lots of interesting exhibits representing the history of Canada from its earliest inhabitants to present day. We started on the main floor where the First Nations people exhibit was. Then moved to the second floor which had a variety of items including a whole section dedicated to children’s television programs. The third floor had detailed information about our population expansion from 1867 until present day. We could have stayed there for hours, it was very interesting.

Decent museum that won't take a long time to make it through. They have indigenous artifacts and monuments also. The views from the outside are great since it is facing Ottawa River and Parliament Hill. So I recommend taking some time walking the outdoor pathway.

Beautiful museum. The building itself is stunning. We got free passes from our local library (thank you!). We spent about 2-3 hours there and most of that time was spent on level 1 (which is where our interest is). The 3rd level we went through much quicker. Limited interactive exhibits for children but our kids ages 6 and 8 really enjoyed the museum. Parking cost us $13. We went on a rainy long weekend on a Saturday and it didn’t feel overly busy. Would have liked to spend more time walking around outside. Could easily spend a whole day at this museum. Pack a picnic and sit outside and enjoy the view of parliament.

We were able to walk from the Hilton Homewood Downtown suites over to the Museum. We found the museum to be above expectations. The Grand Hall was beautiful and full of Indigenous Totem Polls as well as a walk through interior area full of interesting artifacts and information. There was a truth and reconciliation area which was very powerful and really made us think about how far we need to go to help wrong the past choices. There was just a lovely flow to the whole museum and provided everything we could need. We highly recommend it.

The Canadian Museum of History is a stunning establishment that invites visitors to delve into the rich tapestry of indigenous and Canadian culture. The museum offers a detailed and interactive exploration of French and English Canadian history, providing a captivating experience. One notable highlight is the striking sculpture located on the first floor, which adds to the museum’s artistic ambiance. The overall organization of the museum is impressive, making it easy to navigate and discover the various exhibits. Whether you’re new to the country or simply eager to learn more about this land, I highly recommend visiting this remarkable place. PS. There was a free entrance during the Canada Day

Visiting this museum was a truly fascinating experience. The exhibits offer a comprehensive historical journey, spanning from prehistoric times to the modern era, providing a captivating insight into the evolution of human civilization in Canada. Particularly striking were the displays of arts and crafts from the indigenous community, offering a profound and amazing encounter with their rich cultural heritage. We also gained valuable insights into the historical interactions between indigenous groups and early settlers as well. The museum offers a specific section designed for children, although regrettably, we didn't have the time to explore this area. One doesn't have to pay additionally for this section as well. The beautiful building itself adds to the allure, providing a picturesque view of the Ottawa River and lush green surroundings from the Alexandra Bridge. The front yard offers a stunning view of Parliament Hill, although in our case, this view was somewhat spoiled. Another highlight of the visit was the collectible shop, boasting an extensive collection of souvenirs. The prices were reasonable compared to other museums, making it a beneficial stop for those interested in shopping for memorable keepsakes. Additionally, there is a café just outside the premises.

I recommend to visit this museum with a lot of time or even better on two days. It is greatly curated and one should value this with their full attention. My favorite part was downstairs, once you go beyond the grand hall with totem replica and encounter more at the first people's hall. There are lots of inspirational life stories and lovely adaptations of their voices and history. It beautifully highlights the bond between people and nature as well as similarities and differences between the peoples. Furthermore, before entering the exhibition, you should look up to see the painted dome. It's a beautiful and meaningful composition of art.

Amazing museum that one can spend hours in learning the entire history of Canada. When reading reviews before my visit, I wondered how some said they could spend 4 hours to a full day in this museum, but after visiting I totally understand! The floor that covers the indigenous history was definitely my favorite. It is a really well done museum that is worth a visit!

Amazing place. The Indigenous Experience is awesome, and the exhibits are amazing. Well worth a visit. If you are in Ottawa just drive over the McKenzie bridge and it's right there. Finding the entrance to the carpark was a little confusing, but well worth the bother..... I would definitely recommend it.

The museum is normally a great place to visit but the COVID tours were not good and there was no advanced warning that it would be so limited. We went with a group of six ranging in age from 6 to 61. You have to wear a mask and disinfect your hands. We had to check in at the bottom of the stairs, not accessible, and wait outside in extreme heat for our tour to start which was late. Luckily a staff member took pity on us and let us move into the cooler doorway. The tour was only of the great hall and mostly was about the architecture, we couldn't see any artifact or go in and see any rooms. We were given a two hour time slot to visit but dragged out only about 45 minutes of an actual tour. I didn't understand this because in museums, except the children's sections, you don't touch anything anyhow and the rooms are large. Along with a guide to monitor things, going to see a few displays would not have put people at risk. Outside was an indigenous "village", not quite, and a short presentation. Overall the kids and everyone was bored and disappointed after driving 45 minutes each way and paying parking to see this in sweltering heat. Normally I would give this museum a five but not right now. Don't waste your time. I will not return until COVID is open.

This is a great place to visit if you are interested in the history of Canada. Apparently Canada is a great country on lots of aspects, and the most impressive 2 are regarding to LGBTQ and disabilities. The museum objectively presents the whole history of this land from first people to the modern society.

An excellent museum! Extensive collection of aboriginal art and cultural items. We loved majestic totem poles and thoughtful set up of exhibitions. Guides were knowledgeable, polite and helpful. The Canadian modern history section is very well laid out and informative. The kid section is also a masterpiece! Overall, it was an excellent experience.

The place lives up to its expectations. If anything, it delivers above and beyond. What a detailed portrayal of Canadian history! Seemed to me like a very unbiased depiction of actual events that happened in the course of this massive piece of land, transforming to the way it has shaped up today - everyone who has ever come and gone, everything that has ever happened, everywhere there is to explore!! The special event/exhibit of the ‘Queens of Egypt’ was mesmerizing.

Great museum with Canadian History and a special kids museum. Small children will enjoy section geared to them learning while immersed in play. I actually attended an after hours private Christmas party here too last December which was a great experience too with the Indigenous backdrop in the lower level. Coat check available, as well as ample underground parking. There is a decent cafe with snacks and lunch type items.

The museum is a really nice place to visit during a weekend. It takes close to half a day to take a look at every exhibit. The lower level has some really old arts that reflect the culture of indigenous people and their life size statues. The most interesting part are those designs on even a small spatula. The museum has many fun things to do. There are exhibits from every age. You seem to want to live in those times when life was not just about working and earning. That’s the vibe you get. Highly recommend this place.

Pretty good roundup of the history of our country from the first native peoples through to today. Covers everything from totem poles to Bob & Doug Mackenzie. Such an odd and interesting shaped building. Lots of volume of space, fewer exhibits than you might expect. Certainly worth seeing if you are in the area. Not many other museums devoted solely to our country.

During Covid restrictions, I would not recommend this museum for young children. The staff were excellent and did their best. There are limited exhibits and are more interesting to an audience that understands Canadian History. Very few people so lots of room to spread out. Might be good field trip for school age kids studying Indigenous cultures or History of Canada.

I appreciate the fact that they kept the children's museum and the aboriginal workshop the same, but what the conservative party did to Canada hall is completely unforgivable. The original exhibit must have been so expensive to build along with the rest of the museum. I find it completely tasteless that anyone would think it to be a good idea to turn an immersive historical experience into a poorly designed mess trying to talk about Canada's entire history as well as politics? And voting? Out of all the museums in Ottawa, this place clearly could've had potential to become a major tourist attraction. It just bugs me so much that they could even allow politicians like Stephen Harper to take control of places like this. However despite this, I would recommend giving this place a thorough visit. But if I would recommend parts of the museum to avoid, it would definitely be the 3rd floor. Never thought I would have to say this.

Went for Canada Day. Far better than being on the hill, only a couple of hundred well behaved families watching the fireworks with an incredible view. NO MOSQUITOS! There are food and drink vendors so you are able to enjoy your time. Stage was set up for musical entertainment. .. this is where it falls apart. There is so much great Canadian talent out there but there was no effort into pulling in any very talented artists for this big day. No. You don't need Famous names, but you need better than karaoke singers. When the fireworks start, turn off the terrible techno terrible music. The entertainment is at that time the fireworks, don't compete with that, let it be what it is.

I visited with a friend on Canada Day. The museum had an entire exhibit dedicated to the recent discovery of unmarked graves at residential schools. It was a good start at educating people and observing Canada Day with respect. The staff are very helpful and welcoming. They guide you on where to start your visit and general directions. The gift shop is a great way to end your visit. They have lots of local handmade crafts and souvenirs that support Indigenous people.

This is in my opinion the best museum and a must see if you visit Ottawa. We certainly bring all our guests here. In fact we typically drive to the Museum of History, park the car in the underground parking and walk across Alexandra Bridge to the Ottawa side, and walk down to the Rideau Canal locks and take the aqua taxi back. This nice little loop would give you the best of Ottawa, all within the walking distance. The museum itself is an architectural marvel, shaped like flowing river banks on the outside, and inspired by indigenous longhouse and art nouveau style. One of the must see is the Grand Hall, which displays a collection of totem poles. The outside of the building is equally impressive, make sure to visit the small yet charming Zen garden and the deck next to it, best view of the Alexandra bridge and the Parliament Hill! Our kids also really loved the Children’s Museum, one of them actually had her birthday party there one year. Children are given a passport on which they could stamp where they had visited throughout the museum, it’s very cute.

This museum is the best I’ve done so far in Canada. It’s really detailed and interesting. It takes a lot of time if you’re interested in every floor they have (probably half a day!) but you can learn a lot of things there for sure. They have a really great collection about the Canadian natives (incredible totem exhibition, nice stories and great details in how they were living before Canada was colonized). If you can get there on Thursday, entries are free from 5pm to 8pm !

This is a fantastic museum for both young and old. I have been as a child when my parents took me and I have not brought my own children here twice, when they were 7 and 5, then again more recently when they were 10 and 8. There is a lot to see and do, and you'll likely get tired before being able to see all of the exhibits, so I would suggest blocking off a full day. The exhibits are very well put together, and while there is lots to read, there are also plenty of interactive activities to keep everyone engaged. Both times that I've been with my kids, there was more then enough to keep them interested without needing to visit the kids section of the museum, which is still worth visiting as there there is still interesting things to see and do there as well. There are IMAX films available, which are great and are screened multiple times throughout the day. There are also rotating special exhibits also available, which are also amazing, but of course time-limited. It's a nice way to see something different though if you go back for another visit. A café is available to purchase food, or you can bring your own lunch/snacks and seating is available. I would highly recommend a visit here. On both recent visits I've had to Ottawa with my family, this has been a highlight.

Very disappointed with the new Canada exhibition. I sympathize the museum's mandate to provide a contemporary account of Canadian History that represents the diversity of Canadian peoples, but the displays are horrible. Previously, when the museum was under "Civilization" the Canada Hall displays allowed viewers to experience the story of Canada through time. You found yourself immersed in a path of interactive exhibitions that were created so the audience could feel what it was like to walk through the fur trade market or visit the post office. It was a combination of the First Nations exhibition and the Children's Museum - the only good things left in what used to be the most conceptually creative museum in Ottawa. The only thing left of the old exhibitions is the church. I don't understand who figured that museum goers want to READ the story of Canada, because the new "exhibition" features an endless wall of bulletin boards. If I wanted to read the history of Canada, I could pick up a book at the library and stay home. So, so disappointed with this, words cannot describe how terrible the feeling was to find the most exciting exhibition replaced with a wall of text. This will most certainly push visitors away. I hope they kept the pieces that were taken down as I wait for the day that a change in management will bring back what was once an astounding storytelling and immersive narrative experience of Canada's history. Three stars because the First Nations and Children's Museum are still worth visiting. Two thumbs down for the Canadian History Exhibition.

If you're looking for a romantic getaway, the Museum is close to a river side, and there is an amazing sunrise location near the walk trail. Great museum for kids and visitors looking for a taste of Canada. For kids, the Children's Museum offers a great distraction, with stamp hunting passport activities, crafts, and a rotation of popular displays. Activity and chaos level is high! Membership is recommended if you want to come often. Membership gives shop discounts and 25% off parking.

Fantastic. My only complaint is price. Kids space is great (its really best for under 8) interesting regular exhibits for all ages- could easily spend 2 or more whole days here. We spent about 4 hrs saw 1 permanent exhibit, 1 special exhibit, and the kids area. Check movie times before you go. Bring your own food.

Such a great attraction where you can revisit and learn about Canadian and Aboriginal History. Very family friendly, and lots of activities for children. They have an entire floor dedicated to kids filled with fun games, and toys. They also have an IMAX Cinema where they premiere historic movies in 3D. Always a great experience. The facilities are clean, staff are friendly and would recommend anyone to come down and experience this museum for themselves!

An amazing place to say the least. I honestly don’t even have words to describe how fantastic this museum is. It’s HUGE and includes both comprehensive and entertaining displays of Canadian history from the beginning to the present, a cinema, two restaurants, a coffee shop and tons of activities all year round. For those who live in the National Capital région a membership is a must because this place is too big and too cool to speed through in a single visit.

I had not been here since I was very young, and my recent visit surpassed my expectations. The building and location alone are gorgeous. Staff was friendly and the exhibits were very well done. The guide booklet suggests approximately seven hours to see the entire space, which I would say is a good estimate. Wish I would have known that before I arrived!

The kids loved it. They enjoyed walking back and forth on the locks and the view was spectacular. Made a day of walking from sparks street to the byward market and back and had a great time. I really liked it, but I will take away a star as it smells bad when you go near, but how they collect water between gates to let boats and ships pass, it was really an amazing to watch. It has been constructed at beautiful with watching spot, right in between Chateau Laurier and Parliament Hill, but you need to walk down some good set of steps to have a better look at these breath-taking locks. I took the pictures from same place over the bridge on different days. Amazing view when the water runs down the river. Worth watching and definite attraction if you are visiting Ottawa and it is situated in centre of most visited areas

  • 5/5 Leigh P. 5 years ago on Google
Such a fantastic sight. The locks are in such a short distance of one another it really shows how much of a feat of engineering it really is. There's a little coffee shop type place at the bottom of the walkway and you can follow the path down and around to the river from the canal. The steps are quite steep so it's not for everyone. We visited twice in 2017 and made sure we had a wander both times.

You'll have to go very quickly to see all it has to offer, but a great quick taste of what's there and you can return again to areas you want to spend more time at.

One of my favorite museums I have visited in Ottawa - it’s really a sight to behold. Our favorite had to be the the special exhibition (the Egyptian one). It was really great and we had Ciné included with our ticket. The movie showing was “Mummies” and it was really interesting! They’ve got a huge cinema-like area and it was very cool. We also visited the permanent exhibits but didn’t get a chance to see the Canadian one. It is easy to spend more than 3 hours in here to see all the different exhibits that the museum has to offer.

Incredible museum of Canadian history. Very informative and educational. We spent half a day there and it wasn't enough. Definitely needs to go back again another time. A must visit museum in Ottawa.

This is one of my favourite museums in the world. It's been updated and renovated since I've been here last, significantly improving the upper levels on canadian history while keeping the majestic First Nations section intact on the first level. It's easy to spend about 4 hours in there and still have to forgo an exhibit or two. It's worth going to see the special exhibits on top of the permanent collection and take a look at their special screening in their theater. If you're in Ottawa or Hull, it's well worth the trip.

It is a very interesting museum. It is really well designed and bigger than it seems. Therefore, if you want to see it properly, safe some time and energy. The staff is friendly and we even got to see a movie included on the price. The only but is that some swctions are closed for no apparent reason. Highly Recommended

Expansive museum showing the history of Canada from the very beginning to the modern day. We spent around 3 hours and didn’t cover everything. I would recommend starting from the exhibition on the top floor and going period by period, but then making sure you also leave some time for the huge hall with the totems. Didn’t notice any cafe that was open, but didn’t look too closely. The museum shop was okay. There is a wardrobe and it wasn’t too cold inside.

It's amazing place to learn the Canadian history and early civilations way back 1000s years ago. The building itself is stunning and well laid-out.

Excellent place. Needs full day to appreciate all galleries. The river side view is beautiful.

My boyfriend and I took a trip to the museum for his birthday and were in awe of its beauty. We were a flush of emotions reading the inscriptions and admiring the beautiful paintings and sculptures. One comment we have is that there is endless COVID signage but nothing at all regarding food and beverage. The only cafe open was Second Cup - which we were grateful for, unfortunately the only seating area was completely full of parents and children attending dance classes. The coffee was much too hot to drink and we were looking everywhere for signs to tell us where we were permitted to consume it.... none were found - instead we were scolded by staff twice as we walked the main foyer away from the crowd (for social distancing reasons obviously) and not near artifacts. It cast a sour experience over the rest of the visit. Please update your signage.

We have been to this museum several times in the past few years and this time we just came to shop at the museum gift shop. Parking was a bit tedious because of some construction going on. There were no space left on P1 so we had to park in P2. The worst part was the signage. For whatever the reason, the signs were hard to read and we had hard time finding the entry way into the museum. The museum should spend some money for good lighting and directional signs to make life a bit easier for the visitors. The gift shop is great place to shop for all ages. We had a great time shopping. Got a few nice things. There were lots of choices. We think it is among the best museum gift shops in the country.

It was alright. Some of the exhibits were quite dark. Lots of reading small descriptions, lots of very similar items (tons of indigenous masks, or 27 different arrow heads). I found the exhibits a bit boring. I wish they had thought of a different way to showcase our history in a more eye catching, interactive manor, as opposed to walking down a hallway with glass cases on each side. The children's museum was much more interesting, showcases different countries and their cultures. Prior to Covid, this area was much better though. Each building was from a different country (Japanese style home, Mexican style home, a home from Nirobi)and inside you used to find different childs clothing that represents that culture. Kids could try on the different outfits and play with props. Now all the buildings and houses are completely empty. There is a large play theater, where there used to be tons of costumes and dress up items, to preform a play and come out on the stage with. Nothing there now. So while the children's museum is still fun, it's missing all the substance. I'll skip this museum next time.

Definitely an experience for kids. I loved the passport and the stamps they give as you visit each location within the Museum. The kids loved the craft and activities that they got to do with building and plumbing. Eventful and a day well spent.

We happened to go on Sept 30, Truth and Reconciliation Day. It was extremely powerful. I am glad much of the wording has been adapted to reflect what is historically correct and not politically correct. The walk through Canada's history, or the parts shown was painful but necessary. The special exhibition was a beautiful walk down memory lane. Although I do think so much more from these past sets may have been able to be displayed to be more powerful. While the video rooms were nice, I personally felt the actual set or parts of them would have been so much more moving. While things are just picking up again after covid food options were open and good. The view amazing from the Cafe. Reading everything is time consuming. But it is so with all museums. You choose what is important to you.

A great museum for those who love history! When we went, they had a Canadian TV exhibition going on (photos below). Seeing all the shows I grew up with was super nostalgic! The way they presented the info was also very interesting. The bulk of the museum presented Canadian history and I found that it was easy to navigate through. Overall, if you're into history at all, definitely worth a visit.

Excellent place to learn about Canada's history. Clean, organized and enjoyable place. They suggested two and half hours to see everything. But if you like to read the information exposed, it is not enough time. I spent 3 hours and didn't get to the final floor.

Interesting and informative, although I found the layout a little confusing. I spent about 3 hours seeing all the exhibits, but you could definitely take more or less time depending on your interest.

Canadian Museum of History has a very unique architecture and gives a complete insight into the history of the country, from the era of pre-European arrivals, the colonial period and the modern day Canada. Don't forget to see the stamp collection on the lowest floor of the museum.

I absolutely loved this place! I think in total we spent 4 hours here, and I could have spent more. I love history, so for me, this place was where I really needed to be to soak up all that rich history. We didn't park in the available garage, so we did the street parking which was fine. We didn't even realize we crossed into Gatineau QC from Ottawa! I will definitely come back here, not right away, but when they have new exhibits!
