I took a two week-course at Scuola Virgilio to start Italian from zero. I literally had no skill in Italian before joining the course but felt very much at ease there, with a professor knowing also French and English--Professors at Scuola Virgilio know several European languages. I also liked the friendly and warm atmosphere of the school. The students all come from diverse countries and backgrounds. I was at Trapani in the end of june, the weather was just perfect, always a splendid blue sky... The city is clean, small but so charming. I didn't get tired of exploring its streets. All in all this was an enriching experience which I recommend for anyone who wants to start Italian or study it at more advanced levels. Upon coming back to my home in Paris I took one-to-one classes with another professor of the school, who was excellent !

Scuola Virgilio is a great Italian language school in Trapani, in western Sicily. I have taken courses there every summer since 2008, and I can strongly recommend it for the combination of good teaching and a friendly informal atmosphere. The school organisation is flexible in setting up groups to accomodate different levels of Italian and to take in people staying for varying periods - and sometimes people like it so much they come for a week and just stay on. Trapani is an absorbing city in itself - rewarding exploration year after year with the discovery of new things, while there are many other places in western Sicily close enough to explore during afternoons and weekends. In July there is a season of opera in Trapani. And there are beaches - within walking distance in Trapani, and further afield - and ferries to the Egadi islands. Scuola Virgilio organises activities for students and there is also a strong tradition of self-organisation, as students get to know each other in the class groups and arrange trips together to the islands or to nearby places of interest.

The private classes were geared perfectly to my language level and shaped to include information about my interests in Sicilian culture. While learning Italian I also learned about Sicily and Sicilians in conversations about food, art, history, and more. I learned so much! Every lesson was fantastic, and I also enjoyed going to a social organized by the school. Hosted by the school at a local bar, the social offered the chance to spend time with the teachers outside of class and to get to know fellow students, students of all ages. Fun!
