One of top 3 historic icons at Trujillo City, high above the waves, gazing over the Caribbean toward the European motherland, this 17th-century Spanish fortress could not have a more evocative position. Though its ruined remains are not that impressive visually, it's still an inspirational spot to reflect on the forces and characters that shaped the history of the American continent. Fifteen cannons face the sea, and a plaque marks the place where North American wannabe conqueror William Walker was executed. The onsite museum has colonial and Garifuna artifacts. People are kind, museum closes to public after 5pm every day of the week, the sunset and sunrise is a show you will remember by all your life, one of the best places to take an historic picture for your travel album.

It is quite interesting to know this fortress Spaniards built quite along time, it has been preserved as much as a third world country can... The view from up there is amazing.

May be the place with more history in town, due the many pirates attacks in the early years of the country during the spanish rule, like the local people say "If that place could talk what histories could tell us", actually the US citizen filibuster Willian Walker was executed is that place, the leyend says that he cursed the town before being executed, other sources say what the pirates used to had thier anual convention at Roatan in the bay islands, and when they where drunked some times they decided attack and burn the town just for fun...

The best views of the coastline in Trujillo! It costs $3 per person for foreigners. They have nice historical information posted to learn about the region and the people. Would definitely recommend for fellow cruisers! You can easily walk here from the port. It takes less than 10 minutes.

The place needs investment. History buffs will enjoy for sure, but it could be so much more. there has been vandalism amongst other things.

(Translated by Google) Currently they only open it from Friday to Sunday due to the pandemic. If you visit Trujillo it is mandatory that you visit this place, it is right next to the central park and from the fortress there is an impressive view of the sea and its beach. You can also see the mountains that surround the city. The price is affordable, for foreign tourists it is a little more expensive.

(Translated by Google) Culture clashes. The name of Honduras is born in this part of the Atlantic coast. The story tells that in June 1502, Cistóbal Colón reached what is now Trujillo and its deep (deep) sea waters. Today in Trujillo there are Garifuna communities (descendants of dark-skinned slaves escaped from the island of San Vicente) and Honduran descendants of indigenous and Spanish (mestizos). It is a place full of human heat. There is a reduced hotel offer. The largest and most modern is Christopher Columbus. I stayed in Capiros, a very simple but comfortable hotel that is run by evangelical missionaries, but open to everyone. These hotels are in front of the airstrip. The beach is beautiful, without many tourists, white sandy beaches and calm waters ideal for relaxing. A kilometer is the town, where we met the Fortress of Santa Barbara (you pay 3 dollars to enter if you are not Honduran). There is a walk where you can enjoy rich gastronomy, a SalvaVidas =) and meet and chat with its people. This place is ideal to abstract from the daily hustle. If you go from Tegucigalpa it can take from 5 to 7 hours to arrive on a road in good condition.
