Tuban,
one
of
the
districts
in
the
province
of
East
Java,
one
of
the
places
where
Sunan
Bonang
Bedakwah.
And
one
of
the
subordinate
regions
of
Majapahit
who
later
became
a
Muslim.
In
Tuban
stands
a
magnificent
mosque
which
is
often
referred
to
as
a
mosque
with
a
beauty
like
a
building
in
a
1001
night
fairy
tale,
the
mosque
is
the
Great
Mosque
of
Tuban.
Standing
majestically
on
the
west
side
of
the
town
square
in
Tuban,
this
mosque
has
become
the
pride
icon
of
the
people
of
Tuban.
The
location
is
not
only
located
in
the
city
center
but
also
adjacent
to
one
of
the
important
historical
sites
of
Java,
namely
the
Sunan
Bonang
Tomb
Cemetery,
which
is
crowded
with
pilgrimages
from
various
walks
of
life.
This
mosque
architecture
combines
various
cultures
from
various
countries
such
as
Arabia,
Turkey
and
India.
In
general
the
building
of
this
mosque
consists
of
the
main
building
of
the
mosque
which
is
flanked
by
four
towers
in
each
of
the
four
corners
of
the
mosque,
two
foyer
buildings
on
the
front
side
of
the
left
and
right
and
plus
two
towers
that
are
taller
than
the
other
four
towers.
The
use
of
various
bright
colors
is
very
strong
highlighting
the
building
of
this
mosque
in
the
middle
of
the
city
of
Tuban.
The
main
dome
flanked
by
two
other
domes
between
the
six
towers
that
loomed
as
if
to
bring
the
atmosphere
of
a
fairy
tale
in
real
life
in
the
city
of
Tuban.
Before
becoming
the
Great
Mosque
of
Tuban,
previously
this
mosque
was
known
as
Jami
Mosque
'Tuban.
The
history
of
the
construction
of
this
mosque
has
nothing
to
do
with
Sunan
Bonang,
the
construction
of
the
mosque
itself
was
carried
out
in
1894,
about
four
centuries
from
the
time
of
Sunan
Bonang.
However,
the
presence
of
this
mosque
has
witnessed
the
history
of
the
success
of
the
preaching
of
Sunan
Bonang
in
Tuban.
Jami
Mosque
'Tuban
was
first
built
in
the
15th
century
AD,
namely
during
the
reign
of
Duke
Raden
Ario
Tedjo
(7th
Regent
of
Tuban),
located
not
far
from
the
tomb
complex
of
Sunan
Bonang,
Raden
Ario
Tedjo
himself
was
the
first
Tuban
Regent
to
embrace
Islam
.
In
subsequent
developments,
the
mosque
building
was
expanded
into
a
mosque
building
known
as
the
Great
Mosque
of
Tuban
today.
The
mosque
had
undergone
several
renovations.
The
renovation
was
first
carried
out
in
1894,
during
the
reign
of
Raden
Toemengoeng
Koesoemodiko
(the
35th
Regent
of
Tuban).
At
that
time
Raden
Toemengoeng
Koesoemodiko
used
the
services
of
a
Dutch
architect,
BOHM
Toxopeus.
As
mentioned
in
the
inscription
in
front
of
this
mosque
which
reads:
"The
first
batoe
from
inie
missigit
was
installed
on
the
Day
of
the
Day
on
29
July
1894
by
R.
Toemengoeng
Koesoemodiko
Boepati
Toeban.
Inie
missigit
terbikin
by
Toewan
Opzicter
B.O.H.M.
Toxopeus.
"
If
we
observe
the
shape,
Tuban
Jami
Mosque
has
its
own
distinctive
look.
Broadly
speaking,
the
shape
of
the
building
consists
of
two
parts,
namely
the
porch
and
the
main
prayer
room.
The
form
is
not
affected
by
the
habits
of
the
shape
of
the
mosque
in
Java,
the
roof
of
which
is
three-tiered.
The
architecture
of
the
mosque
is
actually
affected
by
the
pattern
of
the
Middle
East,
India
and
Europe.
At
first
glance,
there
seems
to
be
a
resemblance
to
the
Baiturrahman
Great
Mosque
in
Banda
Aceh,
especially
its
verandah
which
has
been
maintained
up
to
now.
Subsequent
renovations
were
carried
out
in
1985.
The
mosque
has
expanded.
Then,
in
2004
a
total
renovation
of
the
building
of
the
Great
Mosque
of
Tuban
was
carried
out
by
the
Tuban
Regency
government.
The
renovation
carried
out
this
time
included
the
development
of
one
floor
to
three
floors,
adding
to
the
left
and
right
wing
by
adopting
the
architecture
of
various
famous
mosques
in
the
world
and
the
addition
of
six
minarets
with
a
total
area
of
3,565
square
meters.
